For the first time, UVSA Tet Festival is held at Golden West College. It's a homecoming of sorts,…read moreseeing that the city of Westminster is home to the largest Vietnamese enclave in the world. Maybe that fact isn't lost on its attendants. Maybe it's just the nice weather. It was packed. My Hispanic bro-in-law said he's never seen so many Viet people in his life. I laughed but really I'm proud of our youth. The fair is organized entirely by student volunteers. Traditional dance performances, processions in period costumes, lion dance with drums- it's pure festive energy. Hungry yet? There are 2 food courts, one Vietnamese and one international. From Saigon to Tokyo to New Orleans, you won't be wanting- you'll be wanting everything. Still able to suck in that tummy? It's picture time! The Cultural Village houses rustic backdrops like altars and straw huts. You can even try your balance on a narrow bamboo "monkey bridge" used to get over canals in rural Vietnam. New location = learning experience. A few suggestions for the organizers: -Set up tables & benches for eating -Bring back rides/carnival games -Find a bigger main stage Admission tix is $10. Parking is free at GWC. There's also a shuttle from a farther lot on Hazard. You can get a handstamp to reenter so we left after lunch then came back for dinner. As we were eating, the sound of drums suddenly erupted as lion dancers entered the food court & surrounded us. The crowd went wild. The Year of the Horse will be an exciting one!

I can only agree with the two previous reviews. I flew from New York to attend this joke of a…read morefestival. When I arrived to check in there was nobody from the festival to meet the filmmakers. I never met anyone from the festival except the guy who was running the DVD player at the sports bar (The Globe) that was showing films where they would normally have been showing the World Series. The first night there was a rowdy group, several of whom were playing the World Series on their smart phones. You would have no idea that a film festival was even going on. You couldn't hear any of the movies. Some of them just weren't screened at all. Sound was an integral part of my film but nobody could hear it. I tried to go to the closing "ceremony" but nobody could tell me what time it was and I couldn't find anything in the program or any of the sporadic, ill-timed emails from the festival director. It's just as well. I don't think I even want to know if I won an award because it would be meaningless coming from this. On the night my film was shown there was an old car show on the street outside. Loud engines were revving while films were being shown. Fortunately for me my film was late and the cars were gone by then. I met some of the other filmmakers and some of the films were not bad, but they would have been so much better if the festival had respected the work and exhibited it in the proper setting. If you are a filmmaker and thinking of submitting to this festival, don't. You will regret it. There are so many other opportunities run by people who actually care. In a couple of weeks I will be showing at the Miami Short Film Festival. I can tell by their website, the way they communicate and what other directors have told me that I will have a much better time there. This was my first trip to Southern California and I enjoyed my stay in spite of the festival. The city of Garden Grove should be embarrassed, but there really isn't much of a city. Don't let the proximity to LA fool you. This is a hick festival run by clueless people.

Giving this even one star is generous. This "festival" does not compare to any others I have…read moreattended, either as a competition or as a venue for up and coming film makers. The attendance was pitifully low - about five people during the opening ceremony and about twenty people for the award ceremony. This festival was said to be in its third or seventh year but I wonder why they bother having it at all. It seems like some sort of sham event for the organizer's friends to put a "win" on the promotional materials of their independent films. On the upside, I found two local restaurants, Doug's and Kaye's, that were superb.
