The location is rather nice, overlooking Southsea Marina with plenty of parking nearby…read more The food was very good, with most of the dishes excellent: the chicken tikka starter for example was very tasty and the chicken was tasty and moist. The main dishes were similarly flavourful and complex. The only fly in the ointment was the service. It took ages to get our order taken despite the fact that there were three members of staff stood chatting by the bar. Later when we wanted our empty plates collecting and order some sweet nobody was around at all. When eventually one member of staff did arrive there were many tables that all wanted servicing creating unacceptable delays. Overall it should have been a 4/5 star review, but the poor service has dragged it down, but the food was so good I'm going to be generous and still give it 4*. Recommended, just don't be in a hurry.

I'm really surprised to see so few reviews for this excellent Indian restaurant. I guess one factor…read moreis it's location is rather out of the way, and unless you have been recommended it you are unlikely to find it by accident. That said a taxi to The Bombay Bay shouldn't be hugely expensive (and it's worth getting there) or you can take a short walk along the seafront, or from the nearest bus stop. The Bombay Bay has it's own website and as you can see from the menu online the prices are excellent value for the quality of the food. The pictures are representative of just how nicely the meals are presented. I was surprised by the generously sized portions and very pleased as all the dishes I have tried have been delicious. The restaurant is very clean with a nice atmosphere and well placed tables and for those who smoke, and those who want to enjoy the view and a spot of fresh air there is also a balcony which is a nice bonus.

While the food here is decent (mostly), there is no making up for the lack of service. It's not…read morerude service, just stunningly incompetent. The waiter forgot several elements of our order (drinks, poppadums, which set menu we asked for) and it was s.l.o.w. We sat down and ordered about 730 on a Saturday - it wasn't busy, but nor was it empty. We had to re-order the poppadums, the starters on the set menu came after about 45 minutes, and at 1.5 hours, we had to ask after our mains as I was now in danger of missing my train. The mains were 'just ready', but were in fact the wrong menu. Interestingly, it only took 5 minutes to get us the correct mains after the mistake was highlighted. General panic seemed to ensue when we needed the bill and asked to take most of our uneaten food away with us. that said, I did catch my train... While not unpleasant, the slowness of service did make us wonder if it was a ploy to encourage drinking (though my companion and I were not drinking, if that was the plan, it was working on the table next to us). Everyone's meals appeared to be equally slow, so I guess if you expect that, it wouldn't be terrible. Despite most of the food being decent (bar the included desert of fruit, which was canned pineapple chunks which appeared to have fermented), it wouldn't be worth the general incompetence to tempt me back again. There are tons of other options just on this street, much less in the whole city.

Probably my favourite Indian in Portsmouth. No - actually it must be - this is the first place I…read morehad a curry in Portsmouth and I have a lot of happy memories from there. The food is good and the staff are willing to have a laugh and a joke with you. We always manage to get a free drink from the guy who runs this place. We ask for a student discount - despite being many years too old. If you want a takeaway they'll also sort you out with the obligatory free onion based salad. Plenty of newspapers to read while you wait but I would say the main business of this restaurant is sit down meals. This is on Albert road so is a perfect end to a night of drinking in the pubs and bars just a short walk away. Parking may be an issue but you can park by the church for free, if you can find a space.
