Ordered take out so can't speak to the dining experience. I've had better Indian elsewhere. Their chicken tikka masal and their "specialty" benghan barta just tasted like spicy salt. There was an initial hit of flavor when you first take a bite but that quickly becomes overpowered by an intense salty taste. I love benghan barta and was disappointed how bad theirs was. The naan was also on the thinner/crispier side for my liking. On the pros, their palak paneer was great and so was their kheer. I'm guessing it's a hit or miss with their dishes. I would not order from here again though. read more

OMG! One of the best Indian restaurants we have been to. The lamb chops were spot on! The tandoori fish was flaky and delicious. The tea was authentic. My second time here last night. Walked in about 11pm and they were closing up. I was with a group of 5 people and we asked if they could make us a few dishes and they agreed. Indian food is great after a night out with the boys.... We ordered the lamb chops, chicken boti, and fish for appetizers. All food came out tasting great. Lamb chops could of used a minute less, but the flavor made up for it. We ordered the chicken tikka masala, bangin pertha,4 garlic naans and some other veggie dish the cook made for one our guys. I was hoping the food was good so I could follow up my original review with another 5 star.....and it was great...but I wish there was a bit more quantity per dish than what we recieved. All in all, great addition to NB as there arnt any quality indian restaurants. One good thing I like about this restaurant is that they dont use anywhere near as much food coloring as some of the restaurants below do. Some of the restaurants use so much that the tip if my fingers are stained tikka masala color for a day after. No problem at Curry Leaf.. I have eaten at many indian restaurants as Pakwan(all locations), Shalimar, Naan and Curry, Chutney, Star of India, Clay Oven, Amber, Dosa, Roti, and the list goes on. Good luck Curry Leaf! Food was good. The only reason why I'm giving it 3 stars is bc i don't think the food portions match the price. Got two curries, forgot what the name of them were but one had beef and the other had chicken/potatoes. Also got the lamb rice. Everything was good, even the spice level. However none of those dishes came w rice or naan(don't know how to spell it)... Gotta order a side of rice or naan w ur curries. Which kinda sucks in my book bc u can't eat curry w out rice or bread. So yeah thought that was kinda pricey of them to do. It is like $45 for 3 of us. BTW u gotta get dishes and ur drinks urself. The only thing they do is bring u ur food. I am a local north beach resident and it is extremely hard to find good, tasty, authentic, indian food nearby.. Yesterday evening, my family and I happened to stroll by, and we could not help but try out this new restaurant.. So glad that we did.. The food was delicious and the service was great. My girls love chicken tikka masala and the chef now has two instant fans.. The decor was warm and inviting and there was plenty of space to park our stroller. We would definitely recommend this place.. We now have another place in the neighborhood that we can go to!!! read more

Great spot for a quick casual bite to eat. Met a friend here and we shared the paratha, palak paneer (my fav), dal, and veg byrani. The prices were moderate and the servings were generous (Both my friend and I took leftovers home that we ate for lunch and dinner the next day ) The veg byrani was especially impressive with an abundance of vegetables and and delectable spices. Really delicious food for a good price. Not giant servings but you can get a full stomach off $10-$14 or so. basmati rice is perfect. You order at the front & have to get your own plates, water, etc. so don't expect a fancy sit-down experience. The owner was friendly & asked us how we enjoyed our food when we were done. The Chicken Vindaloo is incredibly spicy and so good it made me swoon! We've been here twice. Both times it was packed yet we only waited minutes for a table. We all loved the saag -dal (very filling and fresh); sabji; paneer makhani roti and naan as well as samosa appetizer (crips and piping hot) The quantity was more than sufficient. Stopped here for dinner after a long hectic day. Me and my friends ordered Paneer tikka masala,Naan and Chicken Biryani. At first was very happy to see the quantity of biryani as it looked like a small HILL. But, when dugged it up, was shocked to see a half cut boiled potato in it. Egg is considerable but a boiled potato?!! Lol Also, it lacked some spicyness in it. The quantity of food is less in comparison to cost. As the quantity of curry seemed for 1 person. We had been traveling from Austin to Vegas to LA and then to SFO. We had tried Indian food on quite a few occasions in the trip and desperately wanted a good place and avoid surprises. Curry Leaf serves fantastic Pakistani/North Indian food, and the owner used to work at Pakawan in the Mission. The food is fantastic and the service is very friendly. I highly recommend the chicken saagwala (its usually a special, and not on the printed menu) and also the tandoori chicken. The naans are great too. Pleasantly Surprised! The bf brought home take out from here and after the first bite, I knew I was hooked. Ordered: Veggie Samosas - Crispy and packed with flavors. Sooo good! My favorite out of everything we ordered. Garlic Naan - Crispy, warm and fluffy (even after transport...usually they get hard). Saag Paneer - Filled with squares of paneer and the saag was full of flavor. The dish wasn't super greasy or overly runny. Chicken Biryani - The dish overall was tasty, but could be improved. The chicken breast was dry and the onions in the dish were burnt... like black/brown pieces. The flavors were definitely there and they filled the to-go container with rice. So much good food! I am pleasantly surprised. The best curry I've had in years. Reminded me of London in a good way. And the masala chai was like in Mumbai, except that you had to add the sugar yourself. But everything else was there. The spices. The skin on top if you don't hurry. On top of that the staff was friendly and efficient, and you could the'll that they care about the food, and about their customers. Especially the regulars. I'm only giving four stars because I have only been there once, but I can imagine this little gem could easily earn five! I am not in this part of North Beach much, but was shopping for a bike down the street and stopped in. Ordered the Chicken Curry--I thought to myself, if this place is just so-so, how could they ruin a chicken curry?--but NO WAY. The dish came out and made my day. Chicken was not a cheap cut of chicken, big portion, savory and just the right amount of spice. Had to try out this restaurant tucked in quite neighborhood of Russian hill after seeing their pricing. One can call it less expensive than the competitors in the city. The order I took home was a single piece each of lamb and beef sheek kabab, vegetable pakoras and dal tadka. I couldn't contain my excitement to try the lamb sheekh, the aroma of the meat filled my less than adequately sized studio immediately. My first bite instantly took me to the streets in which they are popularly served. The kabab was roasted on the open grill to perfection, a testimony to which was the charred tips of both the sheekh kababs. This ultimately lead to my disappointment since there weren't enough charred bits on the kababs. The layer of richness covers your palate while tiny bits of onion lends texture, the spice creeps on you from the green chilies in the kabab mixture and the cilantro stems occasionally adds much appreciated freshness. The difference I found between the lamb and beef sheekhs were minimal, the beef sheekh was a slightly more spicier, richer on the cumin and pepper and slightly chewy, ah those charred tips again! So good, I need more! The pakoras were average, compared to pakoras in other restaurants in the city it was above average. That's it. The dense turmeric laden, ajwain sprinkled insides of the pakoras desired more onions and cauliflower, just like I did. Well it is a veggie pakora after all. The fresh and tangy green yogurt mint chutney helped salvage the otherwise below average pakoras, clean and sharp chutney to the rescue. The disappointment of the meal was the dal tadka. The clear chunks of onion, spicy red chilly, flavors from the dry spices and the contrasting textures of perfectly seasoned dals by themselves could've made dal tadka the star of the order, but then like I said 'could have'. Unfortunately this bowl of yellow goodness had an overwhelming, overpowering and brutish aroma of cinnamon with every bite. Did the chef accidentally add cinnamon? Oh well, tragic end to a great dal then! Or rather tragic start. Great food, walk in for their kababs and stay for the smells! Very good value for money, honest unassuming and clean :) read more

I am frankly amazed by all the four and five star reviews. I've had a lot of Indian food all throughout New York City, and this falls near the bottom of everything I've tried. The tikka masala was 98% sauce with only a few of the tinniest cubes of chicken. Upon eating it, my friend and I immediately likened it to Trader Joe's frozen tikka masala dinners - decent but far from what you'd expect at an Indian restaurant. Five bites altogether and we had finished all the chicken and only had sauce left. The chana saag had a nice spice but was definitely not Chana saag. There was very little spinach and a ton of dal and chick peas. To top it all off, the nan (both garlic and regular) was chewy and dry - as if it had been frozen, heated up too long and then served without any butter or oil. Generally, my friend and I love naan, but this was, as she said, "less tasty than an unsalted pretzel." The weird self-serve model left a lot to be desired as well. All in all, very surprised and disappointed to have such a bad experience at a highly reviewed restaurant. read more

The chef and the cashier were very annoyed with my questions regarding the menu. My husband and I each ordered side of rice with our main dishes that by the way you need to pay extra . They put both sides of rice in one giant plate!and our main dishes separate with No extra plates. Finally the food tasted so bland plus we were already upset with rudeness and impatience.We sent the food back and got yelled at literally, by the owner/manager !They did give us our money back but with very loud yelling to get out. On my quest for finding delicious Indian food I found Curry Leaf. The husband and I wanted to get our grub on before a show at Cobb's Comedy Club. Both locations are basically reaching distance from one another and a two minute skip from Colombia Motor Lodge. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Massala, samosas, naan and some khir. It was all very delicious. It wasn't spicy at all, what I would certainly consider mild. The flavors were traditionally Indian and satisfying. I would have preferred just a bit more spice or flavor to the chicken but it was still good and I'd certainly eat it again. Serving sizes are pretty good. I had the leftovers for breakfast and they tasted good the day after. Curry Leaf put us in the right spirit for the Dave Attell show. We enjoyed our meal thoroughly but it did not sit so heavy it made us zombies in the audience. Anyone in the area should try it and my bet would be that you'll enjoy it. read more

We visited San Francisco Thanksgiving weekend and since there are a lot of great restaurants in the city we decided to eat out a lot. This is more of a hole in the wall place but the food and service are good. I have ate at many Indian restaurants and I am very picky when it comes to this type of food. The food was average for my standards but for most I think they would think it would be very good. I've been here at least 7 or 8 times now. The food here is among my favorite north Indian food in the San Francisco, and is by far the best Indian food in this part of the city. One of my gauges for Indian restaurants is how good the free green chutney is :) The green chutney here is probably the best I've had in the US. Highly recommend trying the seekh kebabs (lamb or chicken) and the chicken karahi. The restaurant is not full-service, but the staff are all amazingly friendly. The owner especially often checks in with customers to get feedback on the food. ==== Update 5/2014 Having eaten here a few more times, I'm revising this from 5 to 4-stars. Maybe my initial excitement of a good Indian restaurant finally in North Beach has died down, or maybe their food has tempered a bit as customer volumes have picked up. This is still a great place, and the best Indian restaurant in North Beach / Russian Hill, but I don't think this is in my top 3 for Bay Area Indian/Pakistani restaurants.
