I can't believe I'm the first to review Current! This mag is THE source for what to do, where to eat, and where to catch local bands in Washtenaw County, and it's widely available for free in libraries, coffee shops and other local businesses.
One highlight is their annual "best of" issue, where they let readers nominate best restaurants, arts and entertainment venues and more. Each section is broken down further into a variety of categories. For instance, you can make nominations for "Best Cheap Eats" or "Best Middle Eastern Restaurant" for the "Food and Drink" section.
They also put out an exhaustive local music directory each November in addition to their brief monthly listings.
The magazine carries a mix of eclectic local columns about books, music and culture each month as well as calendars of things to do in the area for that month.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for Current because of their annual Fiction and Poetry contest, showcasing local writing talent. Full disclosure, I won a third prize in the fiction category one year and first place in poetry another year. They have a nice ceremony with food and door prizes for the winners and their friends and family, too. read more
