How to enjoy your stay at Curley's: - open the window and/or get the AC or fan started to air the place out since this is a motel and they aren't going to be wasting it on the room unoccupied - open the curtains in both windows and get a full bay view - enjoy the view from the inside our outside (with multiple seating options) - bonus: plan ahead and bring/prepare your meal here or beverages/snacks with the grill (stocked) and firepit (stocked) - mini fridge and microwave in-room. Lights can be turned on/off outside each room which at night lets folks enjoy the stars while still having one big light for the parking lot. Front windows are solid, keeping rooms quiet from the front. Wifi works but we didn't stream anything since it seems the motel probably doesn't have the bandwidth for the whole place. Dish network has full selection of channels but no internet on-demand services there either. Bathroom is clean, though toilet shows mineral staining from well water. Bring your own water if you prefer for drinking. Rooms have a small seating area with three chairs and a table (in front of one of the bay view windows). If you had four staying, you could borrow the plastic chair outside the room. You can walk down to the beach but keep in mind that there is a breakwall installed to protect the property from further erosion and loss of beach. With the breakwall, there'll be no swimming here. There are wildflowers growing down there. Gas station corner store is next door and another market across the street so not far for basics. read more

Curley's is a small, clean motel. It's primary advantage over others is its view of Lake Superior. We paid $95 on May 21 for a lake view room. There are rooms without a view. The room was perfect for our purposes, which was to sleep after a long day of driving. We got up the next morning and headed out. For this it was comfortable and adequate. Yes, the room was small. No, the room didn't smell. Yes, the hot water smelled of sulfur. Curley's has well water. Sometimes well water smells of sulfur because it's dissolved in the water. It doesn't hurt you or your skin if you shower with it. This place isn't lavish and doesn't promote itself as such. Travelers wanting lavish amenities should shop carefully. Look to the Magnuson Grand and expect to pay three-times the price. read more

Be aware the quoted rate does not include taxes. Something to know when traveling on a budget. However, this wasn't the problem with the facility. From the moment we walked into the office, we were treated as an inconvenience. The woman who checked us in was not just unpleasant, she was rude and hostile. The room was acceptable, so they have that going for them. We love the town and area and travel here often. However, we will never stay here again and want to warn others to expect poor service. This is not the way a normal person who works in the hospitality industry treats guests. I would stop payment and move to another motel if any vacancies we're available. read more

I'm thinking why not try to stay in a local motel to get the real feeling in the area of Whitefish Point. The desk area immediately told me the place is not up and up. It's old and no renovations have occurred for a very long time. The clerk puts me on the lake side, I'm digging it. Price $89. Pretty high, but they see you coming and they stick it in your... I go back to room #29 and there is no parking. I'm surprised to see so many cars. The clerk put all the guests to the lake. I get into the room and yes, you guest it. It's musty and damn smelling. Like dirty wet laundry! Ok, suck it up and make the best of it. I'm watching some tube when all of a sudden I have a fly that wants to hang out with me. Not happening. The battle starts. I win, but wait there's another one! It doesn't win either! Not cool!!! Check out of the dump the next morning and look directly across the road where a bigger motel was and they're advertising $39 a night! Talk about getting taken to the cleaners! This wasn't our first choice. But it was close the the Shipwreck museum we wanted to see the next day. We thought it was a bit pricey for what it was, $109. There was no lake view, the room was kinda large, the TV only got about 4 channels none really came in. They did give us the wifi password, but the wifi didn't work. They are pet friendly, which is a plus, but we found a bunch of pills on the floor under the bed and where very glad that we didn't bring our dog, what of she would have found them before us? The bathroom was clean, the tub floor was a bit stained. The front office had a werid smell and we were afraid the room would smell, but luckily it did not. I don't even know where to start. While the location was right on Lake Superior, that is the ONLY positive thing I can say. Do not give this roach motel any of your business. If you want all the disgusting details, read on. TL;DR: The front office had a putrid stench of cat urine. We should have turned around right then, but all of the other local places had no vacancies, and we had reserved a month in advance. We got into the room (31, facing the lake) which was significantly smaller than the pictures depicted and smelled musty and like stale cigarettes. Ok, we won't be spending much time in the room, so no big deal. The room was full of knats; we figured the screens had holes in them, so we kept them closed. We spotted centipedes, spiders, mosquitoes and ants as well. The carpet was stained black in many spots and had burn marks, so we didn't take off our slippers while in the room. Gross, but we were already charged and we are up north, so we tried to make the best of it. We turned on the "Color TV" to unwind before bed, and only one channel came in clearly. Hope you like CBS. We slept uneasy the first night, and left early in the morning to see the falls. When we returned later that evening, the bed was made. We did not request turn-down service, and if that was standard, we should have been made aware, as there was no safe in the room to lock up our valuables. But, giving the independently owned business the benefit of the doubt, we figured it was a courtesy for them to change the bedding each morning. That's when we noticed the dirty towels. They were literally crusted and stained yellow. And upon further inspection, the bedding hadn't been changed at all. My husband showered (in yellow water) and dried with the beach towels we brought with us. Because the fan in the bathroom didn't work we had to open the windows to vent the whole room. The small window near the bed had used bandaids stuck to it in a vain attempt to patch the holes in the screen. We had a good laugh, and figured we were checking out first thing in the morning so oh well. We couldn't get out of there fast enough this morning, but thought it would just be a good story to tell; I was willing to let it all go. That is, until after we checked out. I got a Fraud Notice on my credit card. I called the front office (now home, 6 hours away) and asked about it. The woman said, "Well you smoked in the room." Um, no, the place smelled like that when we got there. "There were butts in the garbage." Yes, we emptied the car ashtray in the garbage. "Well the charge is because now we have to wash the bedding." Oh. My. God. They don't wash the bedding after each guest. That was the last straw. So when I swore at the woman and demanded the charge be reversed, she told me that we had better not ever come back. No problem. We won't EVER return to this roach motel. read more

I have to give one star, but don't want to. Over priced just because they are on water and in a resort town. Walked into the lobby - cobwebs everywhere, dust, and messy clutter of junk laying around. Not a great impression. Older lady behind counter should retire. She's had her time - she's not, not nice she's just not friendly. Got a waterfront room. Room (and hotel) is in dire need of a remodel with updates. I don't care if they are not fancy and modern, but, I care if they are clean. For the price they should update, can't imagine they can't afford it! There's a small window next to big, main window - I pulled curtains way and in between the screen and glass were at least 15 years of cobwebs and dirt. Carpets are stained. Toilet is so old, stained and the housekeepers don't clean under the rim -you could see the dirt from the bed. Other people complained about a horrible smell in their room - we did not have that - whew! There is just old dirt/grime built up where the housekeepers don't want to thoroughly clean it - It's hard when it's old -so maybe time to rip it out and get new! We left two books on the bed. We needed them for our stop the next morning and didn't have them - realized they were there. We are too far away at that point to go back and still traveling. We called and she said nothing was in left. She would check in a few days when that housekeeper was back to work. Never heard. Called back - she said there was nothing left. I pushed that it was. She would check again. She called me and said the housekeeper isn't in yet but there was a book left. They said they would send it to me. About a 1.5-2 weeks go by - nothing. I called and she said she hasn't gotten to post office yet. I finally got The Book - (one, I left two) - It's NOT EVEN MY BOOK! I called her and told her the housekeeper is returning an older, stained book - not even mine. My two books were brand new, expensive books. Told her that her staff is stealing it and giving me their old garbage. She guaranteed me they wouldn't steal it. LOL Like she would know! I hate to sound this way but this pissed me off now. So, not very Christian of them, no morals. She said her staff even returns money to her. Well, I KNOW they are there. So, besides being, old, run-down, dirty and not trusting... I don't recommend this place at all. Sad it has to be like this in today's world. read more

I showed up at the motel after getting lost on a two track and ended up going through deep water. I was stressed you the max. Not only was my room clean but the service there was Outstanding! The owners son helped me look over my truck and he fixed it for me if it wouldn't have been for him I would have ended up blowing up my motor and I wouldn't have had a way home (200 some miles away). I will never go to another motel I will always choose curly's. There service and willing to help above and beyond was a real blessing read more

We even pulled up to other thinking that was the one bc of a picture. Disgusting all the way around. We went camping before this hotel and I used my dirty camping sheets to cover the bed to sleep on. While on a motorcycle trip we needed a motel in Paradise and this was the only place in town with a room. It was $100 per night for 2 people. There was no fridge, microwave or clock. The bath tub didn't drain while taking a shower. There was a tv but only had 9 channels! Which of course means no breakfast either. I'd only stay here again if I'm in the same situation, desperate for a room and this is the only option. I'd say it was a $50 room with the view of Lake Superior NOT $100! read more

We probably got one of the last rooms. I paid extra to be lake side but was disappointed. Parking is next to the rooms which is great when it is daylight because we discovered the outside light was out. It was difficult to enter the room with the key and to park without hitting the concrete. The lake was pretty however, the beach is off limits due to the erosion of the land/sand. It is fenced off with ugly orange wire fencing so the view was obstructed.The fire rings were nice for some to enjoy but it was a bit noisy especially when the windows are open.Since there was no air conditioning, I kept the window open, but luckily, I sleep though everything. The room was very clean but the bathroom was super small. The bathroom had no place to set your toiletries and the overhead light was out. The TV did not have many channels nor good reception. CBS. but the location is good to go to the Falls and Whitefish Point. There is nothing for breakfast. The manager directed us to a bakery/ restaurant down the road. I spoke with the manager about the lighting and lack of lake access. She said it was the Army Corp of Engineer's fault. Next time, we would probably stay in Newberry or check out the other hotels. Pretty gross place! Our room had peeling paint, was moldy in places, and smelled strongly of urine. It was pretty buggy inside, and very outdated. Our tv received 3 channels, one of which was HBO, oddly enough. Towels were like sand paper, and the sheets were extremely thin with some tiny holes. We stayed one night because we were out of other options, but left the next day. We politely explained the situation to the woman at the check-in desk. She did not apologize, was rude, argued with us about the quality of the room, and refused to refund our second night. There is no beach...just waterfront because of erosion. There is caution tape everywhere to keep you away from the edge. The motel looks kind of nice from the front and their website makes it sound great. Don't let that fool you. We were camping nearby when a massive gale came in and dumped inches of water down and destroyed half of our equipment. In desperate need of a place to stay, this was the first place to stay that was not full. Now we know why. First, they tried to gouge us for $90 for the night, which we got down to $75. There are no deadbolts or locks beyond a very flimsy feeling and loose knob on the door. Great. Sparsely decorated, we managed to get to sleep OK on the not-particularly-comfortable bed. I mean, it was not uncomfortable, but it was probably the most bargain basement mattress available. When we woke up, that's where the fun began. The coffee pot wasn't cleaned, there was no soap or shampoo or anything in shower, and there was cat hair all over the bed. I went out at 10:00am to ask when checkout was, and was told 11:00am by a person who didn't seem to like me at the desk. At 11:00am, I am packed in the car with my wife and toddler, roll up to the office, and... "Out shopping, be back soon" on the door. Are you kidding me? Who leaves to go shopping AT check out time when someone actually asked you when it would be time to check out? Overall, super unprofessional, unclean, overpriced, and slow internet having. Stay away. The place across the street, it's much better. read more

Paid just shy of $100 for what would be a $40 room anywhere else. I could have ignored the terrible cat urine smell in the office, the small musty room, the bugs in the shower and the rank well water smell. What I can't ignore is people who steal my stuff! I had left 2 personal items in the room. I know exactly where, right out in the open (my bad). Upon realizing my error I called the grouchy elderly owner just an hour after leaving the motel. I told her the 2 items were together, confirmed the room number explained exactly where they were. She advised she would check with the cleaning crew and call me the next day. Well OK. Thanks. Then I won't turn around (my bad again), but I will definitely pay for shipping them to me! After 2 more calls (she never calls me) she said yes, the staff found them and will "bring them in tomorrow". So they take the lost and found home with them? Its been 2 months and MANY phone calls and its gotten to the point where she makes excuses, denies ever having them and defends her staff. I won't speculate but I should have been watching EBay for my stolen goods. Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Pt and Paradise are all awesome. The motels in this town gouge you for staying within 15 miles of the falls. Make it a day trip if you can. Stay elsewhere. If you MUST stay at Curleys bring your own raid, water, air freshener, hazmat suit and sheets. read more

So this place is exactly what my husband and I thought it was going to be. It's a cute, dated little place in the UP. Room was a great price. We ended up getting another room than originally told but was the same price. $75. Good deal. It was right on the corner. One of our windows faced the water. Nice view. The women up front was extremely nice, helped directed us towards food since she knew we had a long drive. Beds were comfy. I do wish I would have brought my own pillow since then ones we had were a little thin. Only issues I had were that the TV only had like 2 channels and the ice machine was broken. Other than that it was a nice place to sleep. Since it's the only thing we needed it for. Will return. read more

Hubby and I stayed at this place because like everyone else it was the last available in the area. Advertised like it had a beautiful beach access but like the other reviews it is a beach with a cliff of erosion and caution tape. There is no sand at all so don't bother. The toilet seat looked like it had been taken out if a trailer. The shower had no pressure and never heated up. Apparently they use the lake water. The old bag at the front desk is rude as hell. The only nice staff member I met who was pleasant was a housekeeper. Never will we stay here again. I would rather sleep in my car on the side of the road then give these assholes another 100 dollars. The only plus was a check out at noon. Gee thanks!!!! read more

Well, on our week long trip though the upper peninsula, we stayed at five places, the first four I'd give at least four stars each for value and cleanliness. Curleys, on the other hand, is why I have created a Yelp account. It was a decent location, but otherwise smelled atrocious, had only a few channels, and the sheets, towels, and pillows were awful. The website mentions beach on Lake Superior, but it's really just trash littered sand and caution tape preventing you from going in the water. I checked out a day early and got only attitude from the awful innkeeper woman, even though I didn't even ask for a refund for the day I skipped. They need to just bulldoze this whole mess and start over! read more

Beach area under construction. Walled off with orange fencing. Lady at front desk not real friendly. Our trip was in August 2018, so the rooms were overpriced. The fire pit and location was nice. Pet friendly. No refrigerator in room. Grocery Store close and priced high. As well as gasoline priced high, 3.38 a gallon and at Clare, MI it was 2.74! Hope this helps. read more

Took the family to Paradise to see Tahquamenon Falls. I can not speak about the motel rooms. We stayed in a 6 person cottage at Curley's Paradise Motel. The place didn't look like much on the outside but had been remodeled on the inside. The cottage was clean and comfortable. The appliances worked. We used both the air and the heat in the cottage. Plenty of hot water for the 5 of us to shower after a day playing in the Lake and the falls. One complaint was no closet space. The lake front was under construction. They were in the process of installing a new sea wall. There was a small beach accessible from the motel. The bottom of the lake was sandy and shallow quite a way off shore. The Boardwalk and old beach access had been destroyed by the rising water and Lake Superior winters but it made for some cool pictures. We had a few nice sunrises. The desk lady was not the friendliest but the workers we encountered around the grounds were very friendly and helpful. We stayed for a week.They offered free fire wood but the supply was limited. Curley's made a good base camp for our day trips to the falls, Oswald's Bear ranch, White fish point for rock hunting, sunsets and Owl watching. Wouldn't recommend it for families with little kids due to the lake front construction, but it was fine for us. We have 3. Late teen to early 20's. The price was right and the place was clean, peacefull. We had fun at Curley's and would recommend it. read more

Absolutely the worst place we have ever stayed. They charge approximately $100 per night for total filth. Tons of spiders! Big spiders! A nest in our room! Nasty used wash cloth behind the bed! Nasty rolled up Kleenex behind the bed!! Dirt and dust all over! I saw the house keeping pushing a shopping cart around with only sheets, no bed spreads when they were cleaning! Now I know why! I asked for new bedding so we could change our bed and the lady, I think one of the owners seemed appalled that I wanted all new bedding for not 1 but BOTH beds!!! She did offer to clean the room but the lady is elderly and I couldn't see her doing the entire room. She tried to blame it on the new kids that she hired! We took pictures. My husband and I asked for items to clean the room and of course without hesitation, she absolutely took us up on our offer to clean the room!!!! We pulled the beds away from the walls, washed the headboards, washed the walls, dusted the rooms, cleaned the tabletops, knocked down all the spiderwebs and sprayed for spiders!!!! I asked her if she would pay $100 per night to stay in this place, she said, no. So why the heck am I!?! Not even an offer of a refund!!! We would leave now, as I am currently sitting here on a bare bed in this hotel room, but we are 6 hours from home and have our dogs. I don't know anywhere else we can get a place on such short notice who will take dogs!!! Be sure to check my reviews on Expedia where I will gladly post pictures!! Where shall I start...AC was broken. There were 2 channels on the tv that worked. The carpet was sticky. The room smelled like very old cigarette smoke. The towels were really hard like they were dried on a clothing line after being washed in hard water. The WIFI they advertise did not work, and to top it off the room cost 94.00.
