Cuba Street is the cultural center of the city of Wellington. Sure there are galleries and art exhibits but you'll find alternative art here as well including tattoo shops and heritage architecture. It's quirky like New York's Greenwich Village or LA's Arts District or the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. It's "bohemian" and a little "rainbow." This is the "drag" capital of the city.
The mid-section between Dixon Street and Ghuznee Street is a pedestrian mall, closed to vehicles after 10am. And after dark, it lights up.
As you're looking at the restaurants, don't miss looking up at the Edwardian and Art Deco architecture. Just squint your eyes a bit as you pass Whitcoulls and the other massmarket chains.
Do Not Miss a stop at Midnight Espresso, the coffee shop that launched New Zealand's coffee revolution. Your flat white here will be the best in NZ.
