A Hobart classic that has been in a bit of a down phase the last few years. The interior is dated…read more(so, so dated) and filled to the brim with dark wood. The music selection is cringeworthy and very loud- I heard some true WTF tunes when I was in. Basically songs you'd hear listening to AM radio as you drive through the outback. Wait you might be saying - How come I rated it 5 stars when I've commented about the old dingy decor and the awful music? The food is good. So, so good - That's why. The menu has usual pub grub, Parmis and the like but the food is made with love (as corny as that sounds). It's the perfect blend of "home style" food and pub food. The salads are true meal sized, not a few scraps of lettuce with some old veggies on top. My chicken salad was warm with a tangy vinaigrette, and the side of veggies was a big BOWL of steamed veggies. Girlfriend had a steak that was thick, juicy and the sauce nice and peppery. Only criticism is for a pub called the "Ocean Child", the amount of seafood on the menu is quite small!

Rooms are basic, with mini fridge, hanging space and bed. Heaps of accessible power points. Fun 'public space' with bar and coffee machine. Amazingly central location, with pubs, restaurants and retail all close by. Salamanca a ten minute stroll, close to skybus stop 5. Def not a luxury hotel, but loved my stay!

Alabama Hotel is located so close to Woolworths, where I bought my snack supplies from. I parked my car at the 24 hr parking place which was about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. As I walked up the stairs at the hotel, I could see some hanging flamingos and a cafe. The reception desk was located inside the cafe area. Alamaba Hotel also has a balcony with some tables and chairs to hang out at. I was given a handmade soap and a towel, enough amenities for my two days stay. They also prepare free water at the corridor that I could bring to my room. The room was really cozy with a heater, fan, and a working desk. One of the most important things for me is the number of power points that a hotel room has. I comfortably charged my power bank, camera and phone at the same time! I was incredibly grateful for electricity and free Wi-Fi that they provided. The shared bathroom was spotless and most of the time I didn't have to share it with other people. Mind you, it was an off peak season when I was there. Alabama Hotel is an excellent place for staycation around Hobart area and provided a comfortable stay for a budget hotel. It's one of people's favorite places to stay when there's music or food festival in Tasmania. Just make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.

Noël Coward once called it "a dream of a theatre" and Laurence Olivier launched a national appeal for its reconstruction in the 1940s. No big deal. The Theatre Royal is one of Hobart's bigger venues and yet still feels beautifully intimate, whether you're in the stalls or right up the top (there are three levels--the stalls, dress circle and gallery). The seats are comfortable, even for big butts like mine, and have plenty of knee space for long legs. You can take your drinks from the bar into most of the shows on at the theatre, too (fancy wine for fancy theatre shows). The bar is a bit of a logistical issue, though... it's right at the front of the venue in the same place everyone enters, so when it's a busy show it can be hard to tell if you're waiting to enter or actually waiting in the bar line. Still, there's not a great amount of space anywhere for the bar to go, and you gotta make your alcohol moneys, I get it. Maybe an extra staff member to keep lines moving in the right directions would be helpful, just for sold out evenings? In any case, I'm always happy to see something advertised at the Royal, and I like being able to select my seats as well. The website is very decent! Well done.

The two main benefits of this hotel is the location and being very essential to everything in Hobart and as part of that the second one out of the great views. One night I returned to the room and I had the hotel clerk follow me all the way to my room and stalk me until I was in my room which felt very uncomfortable. It was like he was checking whether I was actually a guest or not. I would give this hotel a medium rating.

I would use this hotel again, but only if I didn't have a car with me. We booked this hotel despite a profusion of poor reviews on other media that centred on problems with parking. We figured it couldn't be as bad as so many had said and decided that they were overemphasising the problem. They weren't! The hotel offers free parking (on a first come best served basis) (fair enough) but only have 15 parking spots in three sets of five. The rest of the parking within a reasonable distance is voucher based. At only $5/hr this wouldn't seem to be too big an issue. BUT, parking is either for maximum one or two hours. So, get there at 5pm (as we did) and you have to go out again to either top up your payment or (probably more legally) move your car to another location. Free between 8pm and 8am. But then in the morning you have to be up again and out putting money into the voucher machine by 8am (no lie in for you, even if you're in holiday)! And then again at 10am if you're staying in the hotel for a while. Visiting other tourist venues on foot - back within two hours. Think you can risk it? Parking inspectors seem to be ever present handing out tickets to unsuspecting tourists. The only upside appears to be that the ticket for not displaying a voucher is $45. I've paid more for a couple of hours parking in Sydney!! What was particularly galling is that we have a Disability Card which should provide extended parking but the ticket inspectors gave us a ticket anyway. To be a viable hotel, Somerset should fix this. Buy more spaces, offer vouchers through the hotel, reach a deal with Hobart City Council or Tasports. Just do something!!!

Pros: -really liked the look and feel of the building and spaces-a cool mix of old and new.. our room on 2nd (really third) and top floor-213- had exposed ancient beams and a metal roof above the soaring ceiling -location in the center of the harbor was a plus with lots of restaurants nearby -I slept well in the firm comfortable bed with great pillows -the quiet, powerful AC got the room nice and cool and was controlled by an intuitive, straightforward thermostat -we had breakfast included in our rate and the buffet included a choice of hot items-my wife like the avo toast with poached eggs and the waffle with fresh seasonable raspberry was also nice -the staff is very helpful and friendly -on-site hotel restaurants and IXL bar were quite nice Opportunities: -our room included breakfast but the 7 am start was a bit late for us one morning -power access by the bed for charging gadgets was limited in our room to a plug in the headboard of the bed-far from ideal spot -Wi-Fi in our room and lobby was rather weak and slow -room was quite dark overall Bottom line: this is a unique and beautiful hotel in a great location with a great staff. While Wi-Fi was well below today's standards, the rooms are clean, comfortable and well appointed. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
