The shop was very busy which was a good sign and looked clean from the outside. I wasn't sure about the meat being in the front window even though it was in a covered glass case however that was my only quibble. The guys behind the counter were all very helpful and polite and the final bill although high was about average for what I bought. On cooking the bacon and sausages I was quite happy to see no manky white stuff came out the bacon and was happy with the taste. The sausages I was a bit disappointed with as the casing was quite tough. Still, not bad. The Sunday roast was brilliant. No shrinkage and the meat was tender and juicy. So this butcher is recommended, but I'll stick to my usual one.

Although the shop is small you rarely have to wait long even if there is a long queue. The meat is always tasty and doesn't come with all the added bits you find in some meats whilst cooking. I know of a few people who come from a fair distance just to get their meat so it comes highly recommended.

There are wide ranges of other seasonal fruit and veg to be picked, too - my favourites are the raspberries! The produce within the shop is fairly pricey but it's delicious and local, so it's worth trying a few things as a treat. There's always something for the kids.. the little play area and giant sandpit is popular, and there are often seasonal activities as well, such as treasure trails.

The strawberries are grown on frames off the ground, so they're slug free. The only disadvantage of this is that strawberry picking isn't an option for children until they're about three. However there are other things for kids - a small play area with a sandpit, swings and slides; a maize maze in summer; and Halloween treasure trail finishing off with PYO pumpkin in October. The shop sells a variety of non-fruit/veg produce - cheese, cooked and raw meats, pickles, cakes and even ready meals.

They use local Gloucester Old Spot pork and local meats, and, if you want, they'll drizzle it with tomato sauce. Deliciously retro, they make a tremendous lunch or snack. Just avoid it at mid-afternoon if you are in a hurry, because there are often quite a few schoolkids in there and you'll have to queue!
