Drive out to Point Prim for a visit to the majestic lighthouse!…read more If you're staying in Charlottetown it's only about a 45 minute drive. The lighthouse sits prominently awaiting visitors from afar. The location is beautiful for incredible views. For a small fee, you can climb the steep winding staircase to the top. Just warning you that it is really steep and may not be safe for some. Once you get to the top you can experience the beauty surrounding the area. A visitor like me from a desert area really appreciates the sites along the shore. It was definitely worth the short drive!

This museum is sorely in need of a technological update. Opened in 2001, it contains a walkthrough…read moretour of Canada's history of confederation. While the information is interesting, the tour is run with earphones that contain a radio receiver. Each stop is transmitted continuously in one direction. This means that if you are not standing in the correct spot, or turn your head away from the display, you get earfulls of static. The headset is also heavy and uncomfortable because of the receiver. Additionally, many of the touch-screen displays aren't functioning. Finally, the tour theme is a journalist's view of confederation there had been journalists that were crosses between a tongue-in-cheek CBC reporter and the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was just too light an atmosphere for these important events. I've been to many museums, both in Canada and abroad. With digital techonology, they can now set tracks at each station, and have tourists dial in their stop number in a digital player, rather than continuously running on radio-waves. This would prevent having to listen to the back-half of an event, wait for it to restart, and then listen to the front-half. On the bright side, it's an informative (if superficial) tour of Canada's confederation years.

Open from May through October, Thinkers Lodge dates back to the first half of the 19th century. In 1929, it was expanded and upgraded by Andrew R. Cobb, one of Nova Scotia's most famous architects. Conferences, workshops, and educational events have been held here continuously since 1955. The most famous conference was the first Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs in 1957 that led to a Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 shared by the Conferences and by Joseph Rotblat, its spiritual leader. Rotblat's Nobel is on display at the Lodge as is the Lenin Peace Prize won by Cyrus Eaton in 1960.

The woman who was running the gift shop when we were there was informative and answered some other questions we had about earlier settlers of the island. The houses made from bottles are really neat and you try to put yourself into the shoes of the person who built them, noting that just one of the bottle buildings used 8000 bottles to build. They are cute and you can walk thru them. One is a little church and one had a bar inside also made from bottles. A truly unique experience.

This place is kinda neat, odd and out of nowhere... I saw…read morethe signs for this place and thought what the heck... This is a very small, unmanned day park. It has a dirt drive with a "pull on the grass" parking area and picnic spot. And you can't miss the BIG wire fence. You follow this big fence and it brings you to a look out where you can see the buffalo. Granted the day I was there it was hotter than hell, at first I didn't see anything... then I saw three big things move. Low and behold with a zoom lens I got a pic of the three buffalo. According to the website there are 25, I'm guessing 22 were hiding in the shade... So I was pleased, saw a few buffalo off in a distance and got a pic... Nice little picnic area. There is a burn pit... Obviously use common sense with it on such hot dry days like the day I was there... Neat place, no staff, facilities... I guessing the people who oversee the buffalo probably see to the public access park. Oh and admission is FREE (Queen of cheap finds another one)

We flew into Halifax and hopped into our rental car and rushed to the Tidal Bore to see high tide…read more For those of you who missed this important fact, the Bay of Fundy had the highest tides in the world: 40+ feet (12+ m) between high and low tide. It is pretty darn impressive. After we had our fill of watching water reach the peak and then reverse course, we went into the Discovery Center, where a lovely woman -- wish I could remember her name -- explained what we had seen, patiently and repeatedly explained to a tourist that 12 meters of water doesn't arrive in a huge tidal wave, and answered various questions. After everyone else left, we asked her more questions about NS She was great: recommendations for restaurants, which back roads to take, and more. Hats off to this super friendly and helpful Bluenoser. She did everything but invite us over for dinner.

Panmure Island Lighthouse boasts two firsts on PEI - this is PEI's first octagonal lighthouse (a…read morerarity in lighthouse shapes apparently) AND it's PEI's first wooden lighthouse! And here's an even more fun factoid - it was built back in 1853 without using a single nail!! We had so much fun exploring here - the lighthouse is an architectural beauty with interesting museum exhibits on each floor as you ascend to the tower. They have a lovely display of different fresnel lenses - even a 4th order beehive fresnel which I loved! There are four levels with four flights of stairs - each getting progressively more narrow and steep as you make your way up - but it's totally worth the climb. The last flight of stairs is more like a wooden ladder so it's best to go very slowly and be sure to descend backwards - much easier this way and much more safe. The tower views are magnificent!! You get almost a 360° vista of where the entrance to Cardigan Bay meets the Georgetown Harbour! This is still very much a functional lighthouse so be careful while in the tower bc it's very bright when it goes off and probably not good for your eyes lol. The gift shop on the ground floor is full of works from local artists and great for souvenirs. Prices are reasonable in the gift shop and the entry price for the lighthouse is excellent! Staff are very welcoming, knowledgeable, and happy to share info about the building as well as the area. There's a small unpaved parking area with some port-a-potties at the entrance. They also have a large wooden deck with 5-6 picnic tables right on the water - a great place to relax and enjoy the views after your climb - and you can admire the beautiful horses in the field next door! The lighthouse is open seasonally from mid June to mid October. Storm clouds rolled in towards the end of our visit and made for some very dramatic and beautiful photo ops! All in all one of my fave lighthouse experiences during my Nova Scotia adventures - highly recommend!
