We went here for New Year's Eve dinner and it was incredible! It's a small restaurant located in Ridgewood, and the vibe is casual. We tried several tapas, a charcuterie board, a side of truffle fries, and dessert. If I had to sum up their food in one word, it's quite "decadent". We shared the charcuterie board to start and picked Gouda, chorizo and jamón. It came with some bread and together paired well with the Cabernet we brought. We started dinner with the yummy truffle fries and the gnocchi with lamb ragout. Both were obviously great because they were made with truffle oil. The gnocchi was amazing! The perfect amount of creaminess with the shredded lamb on top. We had charred octopus, which was really good- grilled and sliced with a drizzle of green sauce that was a little tart. Then, we had paella valenciana. We actually have been to Spain and had authentic paella Valenciana which actually has rabbit in it (awesome) but this was quite different. It was more of a red sauce compared to true Spanish paella from Valencia, but it was good. Next, we had the mussels and chorizo- great red sauce, and lots of flavor. Next, the short rib quesadilla- this was probably my favorite. It had a crispy apple bacon on it which tied it all together. So much flavor. Then, we tried the Philly cheesesteak empanadas. Warm and cheesy goodness. For dessert, we had the molten chocolate lava cake with ice cream and the churros with ice cream. Both were very light on the ice cream. The molten chocolate cake oozed with melted chocolate. The churros were more on the crispy side versus soft and doughy. We were able to dip them in hot chocolate. Dinner was a little pricey- around $150 including gratuity but we figured it was NYE. Plus, it helps that the restaurant is BYOB. Sometimes I'm hesitant to do tapas, because I want to make sure my husband is full with the smaller portions. We were both stuffed and had a bit to take home. Came here, party of 2 on a quiet Friday night. Located in Wilsey Square, Cravings is a small and quaint BYOB. We were seated immediately and our bottle of wine was opened for us. Our waitress was sweet and very on top of anything we needed. It was hard to choose what we wanted because everything looked so good, but that's the beauty of a tapas place, you can pick multiple things and share! We decided on the hummus, gnocchi, croquettes, and spinach & cheese empanadas. Because they're all small plates each dish was perfect for two people. The hummus came out first which was fresh, well seasoned and was accompanied by warm pita slices. Next was the gnocchi which was in a white garlic sauce and had braised short rib on top, it was amazing. The croquettes were little balls with melted cheese on top and a small bit of a sauce, filled with potato, chorizo and cheese they were incredible. The last to come out was spinach and cheese empanadas. These are what I was most excited for but unfortunately they fell a little flat because they were ice cold in the center - I ended up only having half. We chose the tres leches cake and churros for our desserts and both were fantastic. Overall, everything we tried was really good, including the hot parts of the empanadas. Congratulations to Mike and Marcello we had a great meal served by a fun attentive staff We asked for Chef's choice so we would have what He liked to prepare and serve his guest. We started with lobster bisque followed by lobster sliders and grilled octopus. Then we rested after this wow beginning with beet salad and chop salad. Then we blasted off again with a smorgas board of different selections. We washed it down with the red sangria and a bottle of the Union vinyards Bigo. For dessert we selected the Zepole tree and Chocolate chamboard soufle to go with our expresso. Wow what a finish. Suggest that when you go here that you call a week in advance for reservations. The place was packed at 7:30. Friday night. We were seated right away and the wine was flowing almost immediately. The service was exceptional. First the servers were friendly and attentive, very helpful by pointing out their specials and what they are known for. The tapas was ok, not out of this world but tasty but a little pricy. We had pretty much most of their specials and what our server recommended. A little bit surf and turf but would suggest avoiding the hummus as we had way better. I would also avoid the lobster sandwich which was like the Chinese shrimp toast. Lobster in the middle of bread and deep fried, didn't really taste the lobster. Grilled squid, short ribs, shank steak were pretty good. So was the shrimp dumplings in a sweet and spicy sauce. We also had the Soriano ham which I was all that impressed. The mozzarella cheese was interesting, very soft and enjoyable. The best dish of the night I had was the lobster bisque soup. Didn't have any chunks of lobster but the flavor was there. I would have given it 4 stars except for the fact that it was a loud and noisy place. It was packed and everyone was trying to talk over the music and each other. Some wouldn't mind the noise but I think you shouldn't have to almost shout at each other during dinner. It is a bit pricy pricy for dinner averaging $50.00 per person including soft drinks. I walked in to meet my parents with my young son and got looks from the waitstaff. I thought for sure I wasn't going to enjoy my meal. I was very surprised. The staff warmed up to my baby and the food was delicious! We ordered the Croquettas, Cheese Steak Empanadas, Shortrib Quesadilla, Skirt Steak and the Shrimp over Orzo special that was our absolute favorite! Cravings is a really awesome tapas place in the heart of Ridgewood. The ambiance was really cool -- unique tables, chairs, silverware, decor, etc. I went with two of my friends and our server was very helpful and attentive, promptly bringing us water and informing us of the specials and his recommendation for ordering. We tried a variety of items, including a burratta special that was unreal, with super fresh tomatoes and basil. The gambas con ajo was to die for -- I was literally spooning the sauce into my mouth by the end of it. The flatbread was delicious and we tried it with the ricotta/Gorgonzola/truffle, roasted garlic, and roasted eggplant spreads. The Rosemary chicken panini was out of this world, with incredibly ripe avocado and a delicious chipotle sauce. The stuffed avocado special was also fantastic and filled with super fresh salmon, shrimp, and mahi ceviche. I love you guys. The half bottle sangria is a great offer considering Jersey liquor laws and it's a killer tincture at that. Had the Arepa which was perfect and a super lovely Ricotta gnocchi with cauliflower purée(finally an appropriate use of cauliflower, a cheap veggie) and a white truffle oil. Went here on a Saturday night with 4 people and had a great time. It's byob for sangria so bring some merlot but they do charge 7 dollars a pitcher for the mix just so you know. The restaurant is your typical tapas, small plate menu with different things. My favorite dishes were the grilled octopus, pei muscles, crab cakes, and the tuna tartare was good. Prices were a little pricey but the food was worth it. For dessert I should've gotten the cotton candy one but I ended up with the Elvis empanadas which were eh. Started by ordering a sangria which was very good. Truffle fries were delicious. I also had an order of Lamb shank tacos which were a perfect portion and flavor was out of this world. My GF ordered a craving salad which came in a small colander and was also very flavorful. I wanted more so I ordered the Paella which was another perfectly flavored dish. I have been here a handful of times, and I've always enjoyed the experience. The food is fantastic, and the service is great. The staff is very knowledgeable about the menu, and they are very good with suggestions on which small plates to order based on group size, taste profiles, etc. Oh, and do yourself a favor: get the short rib quesadillas. We were seated about twenty minutes prior to our reservation at a half-empty restaurant. The manager asked me if our reservation was at the reserved time in question, I confirmed, so the manager gave me a look and then told the hostess to "ask her next time." So we were seated at our very cramped table and already felt bad that we got an employee in trouble. We would have waited for our actual time if the hostess couldn't accommodate us early. We were very close to the other couples on either side of us so we couldn't have a private conversation (I learned all about one woman's diet, and some other guy's very boring job), and I easily could have elbowed both people next to me if I moved. Larger people beware, you will not be comfortable here! So for the food: eh. We ordered a feta and gorgonzola spread which was very hard and tough to spread onto the store bought bread. The sauce on the eggplant "parm" (it was rollatini) tasted jarred. We ordered two empanadas (one was an incorrect order) and those were fine, but not really what we ordered. A short rib bite sized quesadilla should not have been $16, even in Ridgewood. Our chocolate lava cake was definitely from Trader Joe's (Trader Joe's is great, but not when I'm paying restaurant prices). It's BYOB but they sell half and whole bottles of wine but not glasses. That doesn't make sense if they already have the liquor license, but the liquor laws in NJ are odd so that might just be a business choice or what their license allows. I'm not aware of a corking fee because I didn't bring wine. I definitely won't be back and no longer have an interest in going to their other restaurant in Ridgewood. read more

What a find in Ridgewood. Even the name is adorable. Matches the small dining room with a lively hostess who only wanted to please. She made great recommendations which we took her up on. Charred octopus, so tender, never had it that soft and tasty. We also tried the hangar steak that was served with skinny truffle parmesan fries, pick de gallo and chimmichurri sauce, yummy. Another tapas we chose was tone veal meatballs in marinara very good, not greasy, gnocchi was unbelievable, and croquette which was only ok. My husband and I shared all the dishes and it was more than plenty for lunch and we took home leftovers. Ambiance is slightly trendy, comfortable, friendly. This is a great place for date night, girls night out, or a group. For 2 people I suggest starting with 4-5 dishes. Short rib Quesadilla is my favorite! Empanadas and hummus bowls are great also. I wasn't impressed with their salads ; very small for the price. Everything is served for the most part one at a time and you never feel rushed. If you're still hungry, which I doubt, you can try something else. They do serve wine which I didn't know on my last visit as most of Ridgewood is BYOB. Otherwise a small corking fee if you do BYO. I've been here several times and cravings never disappoints! It's BYOB first of all and they make amazing sangria. Also the lamb gnocchi is my favorite! The meatballs are delicious too. They used to give 3 empanadas but now it's 2 so order wisely if you're sharing. The food is tapas style so the portions aren't large but it's nice to try a little bit of everything. Good food. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE SERVICE. So we arrived on time for our 8:30pm reservation. No table. They put us at a little table out on the sidewalk to wait. 8:45. No table. 9:00, and the hostess kicked us off the sidewalk table because "I need these seats"!! So now we're just hanging out on the sidewalk. At 9:05 I asked the owner what the problem was and he says :well it could have been worse". Sorry, that's the wrong answer. The right answer is something like "I'm sorry for the wait" or "My apologies, things are a little hectic tonight, perhaps I can buy you a drink or comp you appetizers etc.: Instead, this guy was a little standoffish if not rude. So at 9:15 we sit down. The waiter tells us (a party of 6) that they're out of wine glasses. Then he proceeds to spill water on one of the ladies. He then breaks the cork off in the bottle trying to open it. To be fair, most of the food was decent. It takes forever to come out. Later, when the waiter came to clear the table, we had to remind him that we still hadn't got 2 dishes that we ordered. I would candidly never come back here. read more

There has been quite a buzz about this restaurant recently and several of our friends raved about it, so we decided to try them out. We got a table right away, but were surprised at how jammed the place was for later on a Sunday night when other restaurants in Ridgewood were practically empty. We were seated at a two-top in the center aisle of the restaurant, a place a would not recommend as servers and customers were constantly bumping and moving on both sides of us. The big drawback is the noise level. It was deafening. We could barely hear each other across the small table. Everyone was having a good time, but it was a lot quieter where they offer outside seating. There is also an (annoying) wide screen TV over the serving station that we felt detracted from the ambiance of the restaurant. Considering how busy the restaurant was, the staff was friendly and helpful. The only issue was we asked for another carafe of water, the server took the carafe, and he never returned with any water. Luckily we had ordered a pitcher of white sangria made from New Jersey wine. The restaurant is a BYOB, but has a license to sell wines made in New Jersey. The sangria was good, not great. It needed a little more sweetness and concentration of fruit. It was not bad, just not as good as we have had at other Spanish restaurants. The BBQ pulled pork Arepa over crispy cornmeal with guacamole and sour cream was simply amazing. I could have stopped there and ordered four plates of just that dish! The barbecue sauce in the pork was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of sweetness and spice. The empanadas were also very good. We especially liked the Cubano empanada stuffed with ham, cheese and pickles and served with a spicy con queso sauce. The dim sum special, shrimp-stuffed dumplings served with a sweet sauce, was also very tasty. The sauce was on the sweet side. Less enjoyable was the fried pulpo (octopus) dish served with a garlic-infused green sauce. The octopus came out of the kitchen slightly burned, which detracted from the flavoring of the dish. We also ordered the green-olive tapenade which we found too salty and was served with only three small pieces of bread, not nearly enough to enjoy more that a few spoonfuls of the bowl of tapenade. We were told by friends to order just two items each, not three, as even though they are "small plates" the restaurant gives you a good amount of food on each dish. I almost wish you could order as you need more, it would have made choosing from the expansive menu more easy. All in all, we would go back in a minute, maybe just on a slower weeknight. Despite a reservation, was crammed in at the last table in the back of the restaurant beside a coat rack, the aisle to the bathroom, and the kitchen. (Note: bathroom was dirty and disgusting). Seated under an awful fluorescent ceiling light, killing the ambience. Heard the waitstaff complaining and gossiping about customers throughout our entire dinner. Condescending waitstaff and management. Tapas were subpar, especially for the price. Albondigas served freezing cold. Octopus plate looked like the octopus ran away--mostly filler. Good thing I brought a stellar bottle of wine, otherwise the dinner would have been a total bust. Will not return. New Year's resolution? Don't always believe the hype. read more

PLEASE READ THIS. Okay... so, let me be clear; Cravings is my favorite restaurant in the area. I love it, and I'm glad it gets so many good ratings. But I created this account and gave it this rating for one reason that actually means a lot to me. Now, Cravings is a restaurant with a lot of ambiance. Great food, great decor, a great hostess. It is a place to eat with friends, to focus on food, to talk and enjoy eating. It's my favorite place to eat. But I've been really stunned my last few trips, however, and so have my friends, because they have had this huge TV over the bar on for the entire dinner time. Now, if it is TGI Friday's or whatever, with average food and forgettable decor, great, put on a big TV, who cares. But in a place like this, as nice as this and as intimate as this and as food-focused as this and as SMALL as this (the TV faces straight down the length of the narrow restaurant) the blaring blue light of a tv is so terribly distracting from dinner and from ones dinner companions that it is completely unacceptable... in a time when we want to get AWAY from screens, to have a massive one staring at you for the entirety of a nice dinner just sucks. It doesn't help that it is usually on local news, so it is a big blue screen followed by a short video clip of something random and often terrible (because, you know... the news.) over and over and over and over and over. I really hope that someone with some authority reads this or something, because it really doesn't work in such a great place, and I really hope that the TV gets turned off. We get enough TV, and at Cravings we want to focus on our friends and our food!:) read more

Love their Tapas menu which has so many great choices. We had the grilled pulpo, skirt steak, Gambas Al Ajillo, tuna tatar, the meat and cheese plate and more. The food was delicious. This place was mediocre at best. It's actually smaller than I thought and moving items/food around the incredibly small tables feels like a puzzle and can be uncomfortable. My wife and I were also constantly being nudged by waiters/waitresses as they were zipping around this tiny place but I think part of that was due to our seating location and the fact it was very busy. As for the food, I enjoyed all but one of the dishes - the yucca balls which were quite literally frozen on the inside where the meat was.. I kid you not. Major turn off. The place is also pricey, which is what you'd expect given the area but I was still pretty disappointed in the dish size-to-price ratio for some of the dishes we had. Didn't have dessert so can't comment on any of that. Of the very few pros - friendly and attentive staff, decent location for parking purposes (a plus for Ridgewood), and it's BYOB (not a huge a plus since that's practically mandatory for a Ridgewood restaurant). All in all, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't go back; it was nice to try something "different" with tapas style but the restaurant feels too tiny and cramped and the frozen meat inside the yucca ball was a huge turn off. read more

Its a small place but the food rocks and prices are reasonable. The skirt steak is one of my favorites. Kids loved the empanadas and croquette and the tres leche rules. I have eaten here 3 or 4 times and thought it was above average. I had dinner there tonight. The lobster roll sandwich with truffle fries was a big disappointment. The fries were fractional so there wasn't much to them. You could barely taste the lobster as it had bread above and below it. The shrimp tempura was nicely presented and tasty. But the rest--short rib quesadilla was soggy and flavorless. The restaurant was very noisy so it is difficult to talk. Generally I have liked this place for non weekend or Sunday lunch. I do not recommend Saturday night. Service was intrusive as well. It seemed like someone wanted to take our plates every three minutes. I was glad they accommodated us even though we didn't have reservations and we were seated outside which is always fun. When they say small plates...they mean small plates. We ordered the platter of cheeses and meat and when it came out my husband and I laughed out loud at the small portion that was sitting in front of us. I've been at just about every fancy restaurant around this place ranks right up there as one of the best. I didn't just like it. I loved it!!! The food is just as sweet, which is not a good thing. Very fun spot to go and try new things. They suggest you order a certain number of plates per person, but we like to start with 1-2 each and then order one or 2 more at a time if we are in a group.
