Your pet is absolutely going to die and it will be your fault for being a bad pet parent if you don't allow them to perform the several hundred dollars worth of unnecessary tests. My friend was an absolute wreck bc she was on a tight budget and thought she was sentencing her darling cat to death when we walked out. They are overpriced to begin with for even a basic exam, and I did not appreciate the high pressure sales tactics they used, trying to take advantage of my friend's worried emotional state. Even the doctors here came across as uncaring and unfriendly. They wanted to keep the cat for observation and my friend thankfully said no. I took her to my own vet, where she got proper care for the cat with fewer tests and procedures, all of which were less than half the price of what Crain wanted to charge her. This afternoon I was with my best friend while she was picking up some dog food and the treatment she received was deplorable. They normally have the food in stock so she went ahead and bought a bag. Only after the food is bought do they bother to check if it's actually in stock and learn that they are in fact out. They did offer a refund however we needed to get food and simply asked for a prescription so we could go ahead and get a bag somewhere and was told that "we don't do that here". My Heeler mix went in for TPLO surgery last April and we've had nothing but a nightmare. I believe they introduced bacteria into his wound as he has had infection and lately now an abscess in his knee. I just found out that his knee wasn't done properly, at the right angle needed for him, and that the Vet who did this was not board certified. Thanks to this place, my dog now has a knee messed up for life. It's going to cost almost as much as the TPLO surgery did, just for a board certified Vet to try to make it a little better. They aren't able to redo the TPLO, but will do a lateral suture to give it a little more stability. Thanks so much Crain Vet for ruining my dogs knee. I think you should pay for the surgery he is going to have to have. I've already paid a couple thousand in Vet bills alone because of this botched job. read more

3 dogs, 3 diff surgeries, 2 different days and all 3 had their sutures come out. Relative to their surgeries (which nine were serious) 2 healed fine w/out further intervention but 1 is still not healed and her original surgery(spay) was the Wednesday before Labor Day. I allowed them to re-suture her and after 2 weeks they removed sutures and 10 days later she has partially opened back up and we are now seeking treatment at a different vet! she's infected and still not healed. I've taken my Old English Bulldog here a few times for boarding and have always been satisfied with the service. My normal vet is a bit of a drive, and I noticed my pup had really been scratching his ear, so i needed him to be checked out by a vet. I called Crain and they were able to see him the same day. He ended up having a sever ear infection. He needed to be mildly sedated for a thorough ear cleaning and be kept overnight for observation. I'm happy to repot he's back to his normal, happy, ear infection-free self. read more

I recently used Crain for their Animal Boarding service. We dropped our dog off on a Friday evening and picked him up from he following Monday morning. We didn't receive any calls regarding our pet until early that Monday morning hours before we arrived to pick him up. We were told on the phone that our dog had caused trauma to his own neck by scratching at a cone they put him in (without our permission or knowledge) and was now in need of sedation so they could clean up the wound. Needless to say we were surprised and upset by the last min call. Once I arrived at Crain to pick my dog up I was met by a Doctor and asked to step into a side room to discuss my animal. They took no blame for the damages done and in fact tried to charge me several hundred additional dollars for the sedation etc. I never received an actual explanation as to what happened and don't believe my dog did this to himself after being coned for a few hours. I took my dog to another vet immediately after picking him up and had him inspected. He had major soars on the pads of all of his feet. He had 2 very broken and damaged nails, he had a big raw spot on his undercarriage (chest l) and of course the laceration around his next. The other vet said in his 30 year experience...it was deff a rope burn. If I had to bet I would say Crain tied my dog up with a Choker Leash and left him like that all weekend. My dog was emotionally and physically messed up for weeks and weeks after this incident. I would NEVER EVER TAKE AN ANIMAL TO THESE PEOPLE AGAIN. read more

BEWARE: Julie's manipulation tactics + unethical customer service + Over priced I brought my cat in for a teeth cleaning, having already visited within the past few months prior for my cat's UTI. I was told I'd be called within the day to discuss payment, as I made it VERY clear, multiple times, that I was on a budget. When I received the phone call, I was told, by Julie, that my cat needed a blood test. "What?" I asked, "I was just in not too long ago and we did a blood test then, that doesn't sound right." She continued with her sales pitch, and even after I DELIBERATELY said no, she persisted. Not respecting my no the first time, I was guilted into getting a second blood test, to later recall, indeed, that I was correct initially. You'd think she knows how to look this info up in the system, since, y'know, it's her JOB. Bree, the office manager, was contacted to correct the issue, but her reply? How "kind" Julie is. However, Julie isn't a nice; she has a chipper customer service voice and intimidation tactics. I will not be back nor recommend services anymore. TLDR: Julie will try to make you spend money you don't have, and in my case, for a procedure I already paid for. Furthermore, office manager, Bree did nothing to resolve their error. read more

Try to sell you a whole bunch of things your animal probably doesn't need and was very expensive. I'm glad I read the reviews before going because he was trying to tell me my dog needed 4 shots when my dog was all caught up with her shots and healthy in the first place. I only went there to get a Bordertella shot and even then he got her the nasal spray which I knew wasn't great for her (she does wayyy better with shots) anyways I came in for the one shot and ended up leaving with over $100 worth of bills for things he talked us into. I had a follow up vet visit with my regular clinic and it was confirmed she didn't need the things that were told to us by the vets at Crain. read more

We brought our dog to Crain to stay while we were on vacation, for 6 nights. When we came to pick him up and brought him home, he had a horrible cough. He had gotten kennel cough during his time there, and the nurses/doctor knew he had it when they sent him home with us and said nothing to us! When we called back to inquire they recommended we bring him back and pay for a vet visit and medication, after they allowed him to get sick and knowingly sent him home with us sick and said nothing! I feel so safe leaving my dog here. The staff is amazing. My golden-doodle, Miles, wasn't feeling good. I brought him in on a Saturday. We felt like VIPs as soon as we walked in. We had a doctor right away and he gave Miles a once-over while I explained the situation. Immediately, there was a team of vets (2 more doctors) ready to support him. They let me in the back to watch him get x-rays. Then, I got to listen to them collaborate while looking at the x-rays together. It was like an episode of "Grey's" in real-time and real-life. Miles needed surgery. He stayed until Monday. We got check-in phone calls several times after the surgery. It was a great feeling. I just brought Miles back to get his stitches out. These guys are top notch. They weren't our regular vet before, but they are now. This is, hand down, the best veterinary clinic I have ever visited. read more

I took my cat to get groomed. She is a 6 lb Persian and very small. We normally go to another trusted vet clinic for grooming but they were booked too far out for us to wait. We have never had a problem there. They always sedate her and she always does great! At Crain I got a call that she had a seizure after they sedated her and wouldn't stop having tremors so they had to inject her with something to stop that. I was pretty panicked but trusted that there had to be a reason to no fault of theirs. I called back a couple hrs later to check on her and was told she wasn't doing well and was having a hard time waking up. I started to panic. They kept telling me that there had to be something medically wrong with her for this to happen and convinced me to pay more money to run blood work. When the blood work came back they told me she had an infection of some sort and needed an antibiotic. When I got there to pick her up she couldn't sit up or walk without falling over. I took videos. It was terrible and she stayed that way for about 24 hrs. After talking to our regular trusted vet we found out that based on her weight all she should have ever been given is some gas to be put to sleep temporarily to get her groomed and that an injectable anesthetic is not safe for her at all and that Crain should have known there was a high risk of that harming her. I also showed my trusted vet her blood work and they said everything was in normal range and she didn't have an infection at all and did not need the antibiotic they gave me that I paid MORE money for. Everything they said and did after causing her to have a seizure was to save face and to convince me it wasn't their fault when it WAS!! These people are money driven liars that put animals lives at risk for a buck! It's disgusting and I will NEVER go back!! NEITHER SHOULD YOU!! read more

Crain has taken care of my illness-prone cat Tommy since last year. I remember us always taking our family pets here as a child as well. They're always upfront with cost before they do anything which I appreciate...because I want to make sure it's something I can pay for before anything is done. He has been extremely sick twice, but they've always taken extra care to make sure he is okay during his stay and after he leaves. The first time, he had a very serious urinary blockage, and they had a veterinarian check him out every single day for three weeks straight after his blockage to make sure he was okay. He has had blockages before but no vet has ever taken that much time out of their busy schedule to follow up so much. I also can call them with any question or concern I have and they are always very professional and answer my questions, no matter how silly they are. Over Priced Vet Care. I took my dog there since she was a pup. On last visit she was there for flea refills and heartworm booster. A Vet tech just took her in and gave her a shot and walked out. I couldn't believe it. I skipped the teeth cleaning this time, but I was reminded how detrimental I was to neglecting my poor animal. Dog has had a procedure to get the gunk outta her ears once there, It was outrageous in price. FYI, The vet tech didn't even bother to check her ears. We have been going to Crain's Veterinary since around 2012 and I have been very pleased with the care we have received for our pets. Most recently our 7 year old rott had ACL surgery and now acts like a pup again. Speaking of our rott, she loves her people, but is like a grizzly bear to take to the vet. I break out in a cold sweat when I have to take her but Crain's always treats her gently and quickly with no drama or complaining, for 7 years now and they board her too. I don't know how they do it, don't need to know because she is always happy and healthy when we return. The nice ladies who work there always say she was "perfect" and I doubt it but they seem to be able to handle her. The reviews that say they are just in it for the money are unfair. They are not the cheapest or the most expensive. Running a veterinary office is very expensive and extremely challenging. No one gets into the profession for the money, vet school is harder to get into than med school, they often graduate hundreds of thousands in debt and start at around 50k- 60k per year so I say try to have a little respect, it's a labor of love. I worked at the SPCA for years and I never met one rich vet but I met many kind, compassionate, hard working ones. Anyway thank you Crain's for years of great compassionate care. read more

Please read other review sites before taking your pet here! They have time and time again killed peoples animals during anesthesia. They are known in the grain valley community as being money hungry and incompetent. I had only read yelp when I decided to take our dog here and had the idea they were alright. A week after taking our dog to Crain he was put to sleep at blue pearl. I was told at his exam by Crain he was healthy but of course needed a dental cause that's how they make easy money. The guy we saw always called him Cooper and always tried to have us do an $80 blood panel each visit. One time, the we did a blood panel, he wanted another one two weeks later. My dog had lingual paralysis and, when excited, it becomes hard for him to breathe. I took Copper to get a bath at Crain's. My dog picked up Kennel cough when I was fostering two puppies while they were waiting transit to their forever homes. I spent in the ballpark of $1200 for an x-ray on the lungs, meds, and bloodwork. Was sent home with my dog and told to bring her back in two weeks. During the return visit, since my dog was back to normal health and showing zero signs of ongoing or recurring issues, I opted out of another round of bloodwork for $425. I believe that they have saved my dog Ghost's life at LEAST a couple of times at this facility. He has recurring bouts of pancreatitis, and they are bad, and Ghost is getting old(er) so... I think they have reasonable rates for top notch medical care, and I will absolutely pay more to get my dog back healthy and happy. I think they absolutely care about the animals they treat; they always call me a few days after to find out how Ghost is doing.
