This is a rather exciting interactive craft shop, tucked away in Cow Wynd, where kids can (and do) go after school to exercise their restless creative hands!
It's not immediately noticable from the main street, but you can't get by the lifesized painted cow that looks like it's modelled on Kiss frontman Richard Symmons with the star drawn over its eye. I'm always interested by large, unmissable painted sculptures so off I trotted into Craft Daft.
It reminded me a bit of the pottery studios which have sprung up in the Glasgow region, because there were a cluster of kids in getting crafty with scissors and lots of glue! Although I felt like I was an intruder on some after school activities, there was enough in the craft store to keep adults entertained - decoupage, Victorian scraps that have come back into fashion in recent years, mounting paper and unpainted cardboard boxes with sister trinket cases that had been decorated with impressive artwork ranging from roses to Mucca girls, to a Me To You bear!
I liked a lot about this store. I liked the personal touches, including a wall full of more decorated ceramic models than the mind can conjure, not to mention the paintings, probably done by local customers, adorning every wall of this place. But what I liked most is the creative meeting ground it offered youngsters. Without being schooly, it seemed like a space for workshops where kids can make as much mess as they liked while also learning in a fun, laid back atmosphere. I would've loved a place to go like this when I was a kid and it seems the kids loved it, it showed that Ayr seem to have a very crafty contingency indeed. read more
