Every single place we found on yelp that was supposed to be open for takeout wasn't. Honestly Lethbridge as a town wasn't looking too great and we were about to give up. We swung by Modern Chinese as Don was closing up shop for the night. He greeted us warmly and was happy to make us some dinner. I told him to pick any dishes he wanted as we have eaten a lot of authentic Chinese cuisine and are open to just about anything. He said no problem and sent the order back to the kitchen. While we waited, Don sat out in the lobby and talked to us about our trip and gave us all kinds of travel recommendations. What a super nice guy. When we got back to our campground we enjoyed a great meal. He gave us dry fried bbq ribs, noodles with pork and vegetables, chicken with water spinach, salt/pepper beef with broccoli, and shrimp with cashews. Every since dish was excellent. The best dish for us so far has been the Beef with Mushroom and Black Pepper Sauce. The rich savoury flavour is incomparable, the beef absolutely tender, and the mushrooms cooked just right. Just enough sliced green pepper, onion and carrot. There is an adequate burn from the black pepper to make it very interesting. We crave it. The other dishes are good. The lemon chicken is such comfort food, that you might want to at least try it to balance out the savoury dishes. This is a friendly atmosphere where the lady/mother/chef/boss is an absolute delight, and this community should keep supporting such industrious, genuine food businesses, especially in West Lethbridge. The other plus is that it is beside an excellent, comprehensive, compounding pharmacy, close to a bottle depot, and has ample parking.

When the chicken chow mein came out it had no noodles and no chicken. I would've described as stirfried cabbage garnished with a few noodle pieces.( if you were hunting in the dish you would actually find a couple small pieces of chicken). When the dish came out without noodles my wife decided she better order some steamed rice. My daughter six said to me I think there's raw rice in the rice; when I tested it out I noticed it had a bunch of crunchy rice and not necessarily raw. From that point everybody's mood changed for the worst and we just got through our dinner. Funny part about this experience: I had first thought maybe some places had different kinds of chow mein and sometimes it doesn't come with noodles. Upon a quick Google search, someone said chow mein without noodles is like ordering steak and getting no meat. That made me laugh Anyway, I'll let our server know about the rice and the chow mein. She apologized and said she let the kitchen know. She also let us know that there was a different chow mein that came with noodles . I didn't want a discount and I didn't let it affect the tip. I hope all the best for the restaurant but I don't think I'll be coming back for a second try.

The kung pao chicken tasted so fresh and chickeny whereas the Shanghai noodles were very earthy and delicious. The food was so hot and enjoyable. Lovely folks work there, so kind and interested in us and our experience. Thank you for the wonderful lunch. The portions were generous.
