As I was driving through town, I saw Double J's signs for "pick your own peaches." I followed the signs a very short distance from the main part of town which included some well maintained gravel/dirt roads. My old '97 sedan was just fine.;) At the orchard I was greeted by the owner, Jamie Jacobson who was such a genuinely nice man. He's very kind and personable. I got a handful of peaches and yes, they were THE BEST peaches I've ever had!! So incredibly sweet and juicy that one bite had juice rolling down the sides of my mouth. I shared some with some fellow travelers and they agreed that they were Exceptional. You've got to try THESE peaches!! I heard Palisade peaches were good and bought those as well but these were much better. I even bought peaches that came from Hotchkiss (a nearby town) and also from the Paonia market. Double J's peaches were still wayyy better!! There's a big difference between eating store ripened fruit versus tree-ripe fruit like at Jamie's orchard. I highly recommend Jamie's tree-ripe fruit!! The whole experience and interaction w Jamie was positive and now I plan to get peaches from Double J Orchards whenever I'm in the area. It's one of those things that are so good that you dream about going back for more.:)

Beautiful location and the fruit is excellent. They have a unique sorting system that allows them…read moreto size and grade the peaches with minimal handling, which leads to fewer bruises. And it seems to enable them to move peaches from tree to market or shipping very quickly. (I went on a tour of their facility during Peach Fest). They also have a commercial kitchen where jams and preserves are made. There is a little farm store where you can buy peaches, (and sample peaches), preserves, peach-related souvenirs, some packaged cheeses, crackers, wine accoutrements, etc. And peach ice cream in the summer...in my case topped with some chopped fresh peach. Yum. It is hard to write about this without also mentioning that there is a very good winery on premises. Colteris Winery makes a very good pink wine (Coral) and some surprisingly good reds. The location has a beautiful lavender garden that you can walk through, outdoor sculptures, the peach orchards, the vineyards, a walk to a river overlook, covered seating and tasting room. A lovely place to picnic, drink in the peace and enjoy peaches and wine. Sounds like a perfect summer day to me.

I used their location to propose to my…read moregirlfriend, and I know that I'm not the first or the last to use High Country Orchards as a destination to start my new life! My first amazing experience was with High Country Orchards' owner and staff. The staff is wonderful. They were so helpful with making special accommodations for me in very little notice. The staff was on the ball and knew how to play a background part in special moments. We had a bottle of wine, cheese, crackers, and peaches all ready for my proposal. Now to the grub. I'm no wine expert in any shape or form. But I knew it tasted good. I usually don't like wine, but this was delicious. High Country keeps everything temperature-controlled up to pouring it in your glass. So, even though I'm not a connoisseur, I immediately trust that they know what they're doing. The peaches are delicious. Trust a slice of peach with a cracker and cheese. It's a tasty combination. Great people, great food, and a beautiful territory! There is an amazing look-out point that really captures the Grand Valley experience. There isn't anything like it. No picture can do it justice and certainly no words can paint the picture right. You just have to be there. I'm already excited to visit during different parts of the season to take in the view. As far as the price goes, I found it very reasonable. For a bottle of their wine, two keepsake glasses, cheese, crackers, peaches, and a couple of bottles of water it was in the $40 area. I've been to other places that can have very startling prices that can make you chuckle wondering what people think they're doing. But not this place. They know what's going on.

Experienced road-tripper am I?…read more Sometimes the best thing that can happen, does! And it's scent is lavender. Heading west, I blew past the main exits for Grand Junction, thinking, "just make the next rest stop...much more efficient than dealing with restroom-access at a gas station or McDonald's." But when Nature calls, you can't let it go to voicemail, so there I was at 80 mph thinking, "ok, it's gotta be this exit here....and hmmm, (a bit desperately now,) I have some fine tissue and maybe this is going to come down to a grassy spot out of view. I turn right off the exit and drive just a moment and it's a movie now where the music is crescendoing and I'm saved! An adorable little bike out front marks the entrance to the gravel parking lot. The next thing I know, I'm in a beautiful shop (yes, beautiful restroom too!) and of course, purchasing a lavender lemonade, fresh baked goods and even lavender-almond hand lotion. Now, about those baked goods....WOW! Lemon-lavender scone with a side of fresh lemon custard. Yum!! A gorgeous lavender-pumpkin, chocolate-chip muffin?! What the? This was amazing too. $1.86 each? Definitely get at least two (six?!) of each. I did. They were so fresh that the second muffin wasn't eaten til two days later (refrigerated) and it was per-fect! Listen, worth the drive! Five lavender stars. The owner was a gem. The shop is named to honor their grandparents who were flower growers, I do believe I got that right. Over some 80 lavender products at reasonable prices. Great atmosphere with tables and comfy chairs, and a bar inside. Front patio with chairs and jenga. Leave now and do not stop until you are on their doorstep. Open daily.

Which means, often lavender. Accordingly, I guess it is usually green in about a month, but strange things are happening- so the bushes already went through one flowering cycle as you can see. This isn't Spanish Lavender which does not smell- it is French. Although it was pretty dry, you could still smell it. They make and sell a lot of their own products- candles, bug spray, lotion, products just for pups, etc. I bought a few things & headed out. fyi- there is a Yurt Bar, probably very fun in summer evenings, but it was daytime & this was a work trip!
