One lane tunnel with no lights so proceed with caution. Takes about 45 seconds to drive from one end to the other. I joked that this is how every horror movie starts and the fact that it was rainy when I traveled through this didn't help that thought. Overall really cool and interesting site. And it won't take you too far off the beaten path it check it out.

It reads on the front, "Rowan County 'War", 1884, 1887. Political tensions led to this three-year period of violence which resulted in some twenty deaths. Conflict between John Martin and Floyd Tolliver caused Tolliver's death. His brother opposed Martin Ally D.B. Logan and killed two of Logan's cousins. Tolliver group then seized virtual control of the county." And on the reverse, "Feud violence came to climax in summer of 1887, when Logan and Hiram Pigman led faction that surrounded Craig Tolliver and his men. Resulting shoot-out ended in deaths of Tolliver and three others. State militia was sent in three times to restore order, and a state report suggested that Rowan Co. be abolished." This is marker number 1933 and it was presented by Rowan County Fiscal Court. [Review 19638 overall - 169 in Kentucky - 610 of 2023.]

I don't know about most peeps, but I frigging love love love covered bridges. Just something about…read morethem...something regal, majestic, mysterious and yet romantic all rolled into one. Now this particular bridge is located off KY route 7 in Northern Greenup Co. Very easy to find, yet if not careful you can easily pass it by. There are no signs like in the state of Indiana telling you there is a covered bridge ahead. Also, you can actually drive across this bridge because it is still used for automobile traffic. It spans 159 ft across Tygart Creek. This vintage beauty was built in 1855 and repaired in 1915. Damaged in flood in 1997, and repaired again. This is a Wheeler Truss Bridge, only example still standing. That's very interesting. I love searching these beauties out when I am roaming around the area on backroads...absolutely something you should see if in the area!!!

It was also cold and rainy when we went and there were not a ton of people there (yet) the day before Halloween. It is a bit muddy, so wear some shoes you don't care about. Nice assortment of vendors and food trucks, but most of them had not yet opened for the evening. Some looked like they were just starting to open up as we were leaving. We had no trouble finding parking. Cute industrial Ohio River town with a beautiful house to be very proud of. Worth a visit.

There are interpretative signs that give the details of the battle. The Battle of Middle Creek was an engagement fought January 10, 1862, in Eastern Kentucky during the American Civil War. The battle, along with the Battle of Mill Springs, positioned the Union armies to invade Middle Tennessee. There are also small paths that you can take and walk out onto the field.

The marker reads, "Established in Rowan County, Ky., in 1911, by Mrs. Cora W. Stewart, "to emancipate from illiteracy those enslaved in its bondage." Because the people had to labor by day it was decided to have the schools on moonlight nights so the moon could light the way. The schools were taught by volunteer teachers.
