The great thing about the items from here is that they never let you down. Go elsewhere and you can buy waterproof matches that will work just so long as they don't get too wet whereas here you get a lighting stick - these never go wrong. What you are buying is reliable items that don't let you down, but because they are also simple in design they're unlikely to be that expensive either. Great for all campers if only so they can light a fire on wet days.

They have a reasonable range of hiking gear and camping equipment as well as many complicated pocket knives and other boyish toys. Staff are helpful, and everything I bought here seemed to be good and durable quality. It's a decent alternative to all the chain outdoor shops in town such as Millets and Blacks, as it stocks a slightly different range of brands, and the prices are comparable for most things. I think they do also have slightly more specialist and heavy duty gear. All in all, if you're about to venture into the wilds of Scotland (or beyond), Leith Army Stores is a sensible place to equip yourself before you go.

Our dog never used the collar, had the original tag and the original bag. I simply wanted an exchange. Woman (allegedly the Store Manager) was hostile with a bad attitude the moment I asked for an exchange. I have been living in Edinburgh for over a year now from the US. People here are great and warm. I have never come across a bad person until now. This manager was rude, curt and could care less about the needs of this customer. Strongly recommend you don't visit this store. Experience was so bad I am contacting their headquarters in Tyne and Wear. STAY AWAY!

Seriously, the quilted pattern has become somewhat of a trademark in George Square, alongside Jack Wills slouch-pants and back-combed, back-sprayed, and dragged-through-the-hedge-backwards hairstyle. And that's just the men. I went in with my mum, hesitantly, as I knew the stigma that came with the seemingly innocent jacket, but I was quite impressed. There is definitely a style - quilt - but there's a lot more to it than that. I ended up buying a wax jacket for a mere £69 and I wear it all the time. Yeah there is a stigma, but not for all the jackets! The staff were really friendly too and ordered in a jacket for my mum, and even though she didn't buy it in the end, they were really lovely. I'm just worried about the condition of my hair now...

Despite being huge, GO Outdoors has rarely delivered exactly what I was looking for, and the…read moresavings aren't great enough to justify the compromise. For those unfamiliar, the store runs a 'discount card' scheme under which, for £25 a year, you get a reduced rate on everything. In my view, this is just a transparent marketing ploy - the unreduced prices are extortionate, while the 'discount' rates are merely reasonable. The staff, when I've asked for help, haven't seemed particularly interested or well informed. I'm aware this makes me sound like a snob, but this is the kind of place you'd go to buy a festival tent that you'll use once and throw away. Imagine a giant Millets, but with less atmosphere. Tiso down the road may have a smaller stock and be a bit more expensive, but more often than not I'll leave with the thing I went in for.

If you're into your bikes then I would give this place a bit of a body swerve and opt for one of the local independents - you'll get a way better standard of service and probably better selection of whatever it is you're looking for. Saying that, I suspect this place caters well for walkers as there was a lot more on offer for outdoorsy types. Tents, trews, shoes, socks, tops and hats galore. Also lots of camping gear and stuff of that ilk. I think I'd be happy to come back here for general outdoor stuff (think Tiso) but any bike bits will likely be a disappointment.

Footworks were utterly brilliant and provided such a good service that I have never looked anywhere else for running shoes. The staff are friendly & highly knowledgeable and will tell you if you have your eye on the wrong kind of gear rather than just selling to you regardless. They have a lovely selection of stock and although pricey, I have never been disappointed with a purchase. Footworks also is a little hub for the Edinburgh running community with free brochures on running events nationwide & its own running club. A place well worth a visit if you are serious about your running.

I came in here the other day looking for a good pair of shoes to do me for the Moonwalk. In fact,…read moreI came in having just done a 9 mile walk. I had a few minutes to take a look at what they have on display before someone offered to help me. I said I wanted walking shoes, we verified my size, and away he went. I found this kind of interesting - what about the price? I couldn't help but notice the fact that most of the running shoes were around the £100 mark though ranged down to more affordable prices. Are the clientele here the type to not look at price tags? And what about style? Ok I realise they're exercise shoes, but surely people have a style preference? The guy came back with a stack of boxes and took out the first pair for me to try. They were grey with pink detailing. I cringed that the pink but duitifully tried them on. I found them hard and uncomfortable and said this to the guy who responded "they're walking shoes, that's how they're supposed to be" - oh, but why? Why is it that apparently walking shoes are hard while running shoes have bounce to them? He went on to explain how arch support works. I know how arch support works and am going to assume that running shoes have arch support, so this doesn't actually explain to me why walking shoes are so hard. Anyway. Based on my feedback, he presented me with a pair of aqua and orange shoes. Seriously. I said they were way too flashy so he went to get a few more pairs. I was then given the option between silver and purple, and blue and red (or something). I said they were all far too colorful and was told "Well, that's all we have, sorry" at which point he turned around and immediately started helping someone else. Am I the only person to come in here looking for good shoes that don't blind passers by? Do they really only have ridiculously coloured walking shoes? Also - WHY was one of the guys working here wearing teeny tiny running short shorts?? Ok I get it, you're a runner. You know what you're talking about. Do you have fantastic legs? Absolutely. Do I want to be just about eye level with your barely covered arse when I'm trying on shoes? No. I dont. Far from my experience, everyone else in here was getting excellent service, getting a chance to properly try out the shoes on treadmills. From what Alison K has said, this is much more than just a shoe store. Unfortunately, for whatever reason (I can't help but wonder if my post-walk attire was why) I didn't receive this kind of service and what I experienced won't see me returning.
