I have taken the Coronado Ferry only twice in my life. The first time was several years ago when a group of friends took another friend for a birthday dinner in Coronado, and then we came back to enjoy the Gaslamp nightlife. The second time was just last week, when I took my husband out for his birthday dinner. I thought it would be fun to get there by ferry. The Coronado Ferry is run by Flagship Cruises and Events. There are two downtown pickup locations with their own schedules, one behind the Convention Center and one behind Broadway Pier. Both go to the adorable Coronado Ferry Landing where you can enjoy several restaurants and shops within walking distance. Last week, I found it a bit challenging to find the pickup spot behind the Convention Center, as there wasn't a full address listed on the website. It is simply listed as Fifth Avenue Pier. However, we found it in time, as I saw the sign for Flagship Cruises. Though it had been a rainy afternoon and evening, our 7:25PM pickup took place on time. We climbed aboard and chose the second level to enjoy the views of downtown and the Coronado Bridge. It was peaceful, beautiful and enjoyable... all 10 minutes of it. After all, Coronado is not at all far from downtown. My only issue is that I find $9 one way per person a bit pricey for such a short ride. However, it is fine if you don't go regularly. I also learned that for regular weekday commuter times, you may be able to qualify for a free commuter pass. All in all, it is a fun thing to do, and really would be a nice way to take out-of-town guests to enjoy Coronado. read more

This was an inexpensive, no fuss way to get over to Coronado island. Girl selling the tickets at the counter wasn't the friendliest but we enjoyed how efficient the boat came and left. The Ride was very peaceful, especially at the top. Most people sat at the bottom. Someone claimed to have seen a dolphin, but unfortunately I didn't spot one after the fact. In order to get on the boat ride, you do have to pay for tickets at the window across from the entrance. After, you do have to wait in a line. On the way back to return to San Diego, there was a worker who was very observant, watching specific people's every move. We had tickets and there was a female worker by the male who was talking to a customer who wanted to purchase tickets. As we were approaching the woman worker, the male worker left the customers mid conversation, got in front of the other worker to get our tickets as we were approaching her.. We went on the Coronado to visit the island of Coronado. My mom has anxiety so the bridge wasn't an option for us, so we took the scenic route. I don't go on boats much, so this was a fun day trip. It takes about 30 minutes to and from the island, and there's different time increments of when the boat comes back. It's definitely a busy boat and the lines can get pretty annoying, especially with the typical large family with screaming toddlers types of tourist groups. read more

The Coronado Ferry is a great option for anyone wanting to see Coronado Island who maybe doesn't have access to a car. The ferry is $7 one way and tickets can be purchased online or in person. The ferry is extremely prompt and leaves exactly when it says it does so be sure to give yourself about 10 or 15 minutes of cushion time so you aren't late. I was not as wise and accidentally missed the ferry so I had to wait a whole hour for the next one to arrive! I was cutting it pretty close but I was also very confused about which area of the pier the ferry would leave from. It wasn't indicated on the tickets I purchased online or in any confirmation email I received. So when I arrived, I jumped in the first line I saw which ended up being a whale watching tour - not the ferry! Whoopsie. By this point, it was about 3 minutes past the hour and when I asked the information desk where the ferry is boarding, she said it had already left. Womp womp womp.... So for those who might be a little confused, the ferry leaves from gate 2 on broadway pier. Gate 2! If you see any other line, it's not for the ferry you probably want to get on. All confusion aside, the ferry is a super convenient and reliable option to get to Coronado. The ride itself is very peaceful and gives a great view of the San Diego skyline. I rode it once after finishing middle school and enjoyed the trip. If you are here in the day time, you can get a clear view of the city. For those riding in the nighttime, it is very relaxing. Although I had no use for going to Coronado at night, the ambient setting of the ferry was good enough for me. I got to see a cruise ship, navy vessels and the Star of India. If you are lucky you can see the Coronado Bridge, it's a nice bridge that is old but very modern. Right next to the ferry was a city cruise ship which was undergoing testing for a party it will be hosting. Walking around the Embarcadero as we do once in a while, we like to take the water ferry over to Coronado to have lunch. Even if it ain't so much to eat, just a ride on the water with the breeze in your face is good enough in it's own right. $10 bucks a pop for a roundtrip ticket is not too bad but I wish it were a couple of dollars cheaper for locals as to encourage more of us to get out and enjoy our beautiful city. Still, ain't like I'm making the 15 minute journey everyday so I'm not complaining. Here's something to note just in case you're unaware: The ferry docks in two different spots on the San Diego side. I did not know this. We've always boarded at gate 1 or 2 to the right of the Midway, sail over to Coronado Ferry landing and back. Well today, left the ferry landing and was dropped off behind the convention center beside Joe's Crab Shack. This is not that big of a deal, we were parked at Seaport Village so the distance from both docks were practically the same. Just keep this in mind if you're parked further west from the Midway. Not a bad way to get to and from San Diego to the island. The cost of the ride is really negligible because you would probably have to pay the same for parking if you drove to the other side. Anyhow, that's it, only complaint would be lower prices for locals but you can see I ain't putting much effort into that. read more

Coronado island is one of the best places to visit in San Diego! It has two different ships. There is one ship that goes not that far to a dock! There is another ship that goes farther that also parks on a dock and great experiences before getting back on the boat. The boat was very calming and not fast like a jet ski. POINT A TO POINT B Broadway Pier to Coronado Pier and back. I'm not sure if the round trip $10 ride was worth it but for cyclists like myself we are obligated to take the ferry. The staff are incredibly friendly (ticket booth, boat staff, etc) and the service is on time. It has two decks, first deck has bike racks and tables and chairs. Top deck has the outdoor seating, perfect for those who want to take in the view. The ferry ride is short, like 7-8 minutes. I did consider taking a one way to Coronado and cycling back up south bay but when it's 97 degrees outside and you're in cycling clothes... f* that. Ferry is the way to go and best way to cool off. We made a plan for the day and walked all the way from Broadway to the ferry landing. When we got there was the first time we saw a sign that said hey you have to have a mask to get on an open boat on our way to Coronado. Of course since masks are not required, we didn't have them.
