Tropical island in the Philippines [PALAWAN Philippines] We dedicated a whole day island-hopping in Coron Palawan. It is one of the most amazing islands in the Philippines, with massive limestone peaks, multicolored lagoons, and great water activities like kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving. We rented a private boat for a day tour. There were nine of us. Coron town is authentic, rural and cheap! Perfect town with a great balance of delicious Filipino food, shopping, and cheap transport. We used tricycle rides to get around. All the restaurants we dined in had live music entertainment. Filipinos love to sing. We stayed in Bacău Bay Resort for four nights. It was peaceful since it was away from the main town. Our room was spacious and comfortable with modern amenities. Buffet brunch was included with the room. What an amazing experience to visit a place that I've only seen in travel brochures. Palawan is gorgeous with clear, blue water; coral reefs teeming with sea life and ship wrecks; white sand beaches; hidden lagoons and numerous islets to explore. My niece was able to get us a cheap 3 day package deal which included airfare, transportation to and from the airport, hotel accommodations with free breakfast, and one full day of island hopping with lunch included. It was an hour flight from Clark International airport and a 30 minute car ride from the Busuanga airport. The road to Coron Town Proper was long and winding. Since we arrived earlier than our check in time, we had lunch at the hotel's restaurant. Afterwards, we bought essentials at the convenience store on the first floor, then walked across the street to get water shoes (a necessity to protect your feet from the corals and to ensure your footing on slippery surfaces), a waterproof cover for our phones, hubby's swim trunks and my niece's sunglasses. My nieces and nephew were so excited to go snorkeling that they spoke to some locals. They introduced them to a boat captain who agreed to take us on a half day tour of Barracuda Lake, Hidden Lagoon and Smith Beach. My favorite spot was Smith beach which had white sand, lots of HUGE starfish and two friendly cats. The sun was setting which gave us gorgeous lighting for our pictures to capture our first day in paradise. The next day on our island hopping tour we went to Twin Lagoons, CYC Beach, Skeleton Shipwreck, Green Lagoon, Kayangan Lake, and Siete Pecados. Hubby's favorite spot was Skeleton Shipwreck with it's many colorful corals, exotic tropical fish, and of course, a 25 meter long Japanese ship that sunk during WWII. My favorite site, however, was the Twin Lagoons. It's best to go there early in the day when the tide is low, because you can kayak through a tunnel beneath the limestone mountain. We had to bend over backwards to be able to pass through, which gave us an opportunity to examine the interesting rock formations above us (please see video). On our last day, before heading home, my cousin and I climbed the looooong staircase to the top of Mount Tapyas. It took us about an hour for us to climb up and then down the 700+ steps. We took multiple stops to rest and take pictures. It was a nice climb, most of which was shaded by trees; it was an ideal spot to take in the width and breadth of Coron. Sadly, we must say our goodbyes. What I'm most grateful about this trip is the time spent with loved ones, and the opportunity to enjoy the simple things in life: the warmth of the sun on my skin, the wind through my hair, waves lapping at my feet, the gorgeous colors of the sunset and the welcoming rays of the sunrise. The water is so clear! Some part of the water is salty and some part of the water is fresh water. I saw a lot of fish! The corals are so beautiful!! The tour guides are very nice! And they will cook lunch in the boat and serve it in the middle of the ocean. I'm so happy I get to see this island in real life! By the way bring a water shoes because there's a lot of hiking trails and also you don't want to step on the sea urchin with your bare foot. P.S. DO NOT CATCH THE FISH! read more

One of the many beautiful islands in the Philippines that has not been too commercialized yet to the world but after my review... it may be! Hahaha Right now, it's not as crowded as main Island of Palawan. Coron is right next to Palawan which is still part of Palawan. So many beautiful lakes, beaches and secluded resorts are held here. Some small islands are not taken yet. The secluded resorts which I mean is, in order for you to get to some of these resorts, you have to take a boat to get there! When swimming in the ocean, you can tell it's salt water as the warm water feels thick to swim in. It's pretty clear in most lakes and not as salty as it thought, too. The main island of Coron downtown where the BSU airport is located is very small and a little crowded. Don't get me started with their airport! Seems as if everything is run by generators? There are many farms surrounding the downtown area. The farms are still so green and so many trees; still untouched. We can literally drive from one side of the island to the other side in less than an hour! Seems to be almost like Hawaii! When I said I hope Coron doesn't get crowded, it's really unavoidable. Why do you ask? They are now widening all the main roads within the main island of Coron! There is a lot of road construction everywhere. You know more big things are coming their way. Coron is a destination in the Philippines worth seeing! Kayangan Lake - there's a short easy hike to get to the lake. On the way is the well known view point of Coron Island Cove. The view is beautiful to see. Once you get to the lake, it is a popular place to snorkel. There's a wooden bridge to walk along with several places to leave your towel. The water is pretty clear with a few fishes to see. There is at least one cave that you can snorkel into. Without a flashlight, it can be pretty hard to see the rocks though. There are several areas around the island where people can snorkel. One of the areas is where a sunken WWII ship is. If you're snorkeling (like we were), you can see the ship covered in coral from the surface of the water. Many were free diving to get a closer look or pictures, and a few scuba divers were swimming around. At the twin lagoons, you can swim under a small opening (or climb up and around) to get to the other lagoon. Once you get to the second lagoon, it's pretty nice as you're completely surrounded by the island. Snorkeling was probably the best near the twin peaks (two large rock formations). This area had several schools of fishes swimming around. There are also several beaches along that you can stop in when touring around the island. Some areas sell fresh young coconuts or have seating area to eat lunch at. I highly recommend seeing Coron when in the Philippines. It's about an hour flight from Manila, but worth it, especially if you scuba dive or even snorkel as there are clear waters and a lot to see. read more

Do yourself a favor in life and visit Coron! Safe, Fun, Cheap, etc.. We stayed at an awesome place called underwater garden. We then to a boat to the island of Coron where we did lot's of shopping, eating and touring. We also booked a snorkeling tour that topped any snorkeling I did in Guam and Hawaii! My wife and I spend two weeks in the PI and this is the memory that sticks our most. Definitely make plans to go here!! read more
