We were pleased to see a food/restroom stop in the midst of the expanse that was our drive to El Paso; only to find it was closed, even though there was a huge OPEN sign and the voicemail greeting indicated 8am-5pm hours (closed Tuesdays) - it was Thursday. I guess we'll have to hold it until we get closer to El Paso.

Five stars because this place is literally in the middle of no where. The building is 100 years old and the family running the place has been there 50 years. The cookies are nasty so don't buy them unless they are fresh. We bought a few sodas, some chips oh and the cookies. The food looked really good, we didn't order anything but man it looked good. If you are in this part of the world this is the only place you can stop so because of that it's the best stop in the area.

I found this place completely by accident! It's in the middle of nowhere, but it popped up just in time! The food is pretty pricey you'll pay about $7-$9 for a burger. Fries and drinks are extra. The food is pretty good, I always get the Cornudas Burger with green chili. the onion rings are amazing. The atmosphere is a little different. There are tons of old photos everywhere, even under the tablecloths. The place is old, and the people that are always in there are too. The old lady who runs the place is pretty nice. The menus are on paper bags, and the drinks are served in mason jars. If you're not a customer there is a $1 fee for the restroom. There is a gift shop that's so overpriced it's not funny, mainly full of really old stuff. All in all you gotta stop in and try a burger here

After a few days of camping and hiking we stopped here for breakfast on the way back to El Paso and it was GREAT! The food was delicious and the portions were generous, but the neat thing was the friendliness of the family who owned the place. The grandson in his cowboy hat who was our waiter was super helpful and attentive and it was an overall great experience! Will definitely stop by again.

On our second trip to hike Guadalupe, Cornudas Cafe was open. It's a small cafe run by Mae (sp?) and her daughter Debbie. When we arrived, Debbie said we could sit anywhere. The table we picked was theirs! It had their half filled coffee cup, soda, OTC pills and open bags of candy. We double checked if this table was okay for us to sit, and it was. We ordered the Famous Burger with fries and onion rings. The burger was outstandingly flavorful, made and cooked with TLC! The fries were hand cut and so were the onion rings. Very tasty! The best part is that Mae came to get her coffee cup off our table and I asked her to join us. We learned so much history of Cornudas from Mae. Cornudas is the name of the town and not her last name! She has been not only the owner of this cafe, but the ambulance service, EMT, fire department with the fire truck, the mayor and of 150 miles of open road she was the only civilization that took care of everything in this heavily travelled road. She is closed Monday and Tuesday's so don't hike on these days else you'll miss this gem of a cafe. We'll see you next trip to Guadalupe!

My family and I literally ran into Cornudas Cafe on our way from El Paso to Carlsbad Caverns. We were driving in the middle of nowhere when we came across this wonderful little oasis. The cafe is down home cooking with a no nonsense attitude. I love reading all of the fun, don't put up with any crap signs inside. I enjoyed the eggs and bacon breakfast with country potatoes and toast. I felt like I was eating at my grandmas house. While I was waiting for my food, I scrolled through the unique store connected to the restaurant. They had a lot of tchotchkes and knickknacks. I would recommend stopping and grabbing a quick breakfast or lunch if you are on a long drive and need to catch your breath.

stopped here with my friends the other day on a detour and it was just our luck that this really is the best burger in Cornudas! do yourself a favor if you're driving by and have that delicious long burger with the hatch chilies [and maybe ask for extra] and super fresh fries or the huge onion rings, you will not regret it! the folks there are wonderful and helpful and it was just overall a perfect little lunch experience, my friends and i were super happy when we left, i'm glad we stopped!

May is the owner of the restaurant and honorary Mayor of Cornudas. It's May's way or the highway! Eat here or starve: no food for miles. The entire population of Cornudas was seated at a corner table. While passing the (short) wait for your meal, browse the adjacent shop for cactus curios. May is serving Cornudas burgers and open faced sandwiches. Terrific pies. Leave your photo or note for future customers under the clear plastic tablecloth. Extra star awarded for down home charm.

The food was terrible. Eggs over easy were hard toast was two bottoms of a hamburger bun but hey got the tops on my club sandwich h Hashbrown was almost a over cooked tater tot and Philly cheese steak with a hamburger patty. Wow disappointed read more
For being the only place to eat for tens of miles in each direction, patty melt was well priced and very good, as were the fries. Diner is seat yourself, and service was friendly. There's nothing else between El Paso and Guadalupe mountains national park, this is going to be my go-to for a meal after hiking trips from now on ! Highly recommend. read more

If you're driving between Carlsbad, NM and El Paso, TX, do yourself a favor and stop by Cornudas Cafe! Their breakfast burritos are hands-down some of the best I've ever had. I'm confident the rest of the menu is just as delicious. Don't miss out on this hidden gem - your taste buds will thank you!!! read more

On our return trip to El Paso from Carlsbad, my convoy decided to stop in and grab a bite here at Cornudas. My friend had eaten here years back, and swears by a particular burger they offer. I wasnt impressed when we first rolled up. The exterior of the whole place seemed a bit un-kept and run down. The interior was different however. Old School is the first term that came to mind. Although this was my first visit here, I would venture to guess that the interior has not changed much in quite a long time. I really got a kick out of the interior: from the boots+jeans for table legs, to the walls of old photos of visitors, to the wall of foreign currency. This place is DEFINITELY one-of-a-kind! Now about the food. So that burger my buddy was so set on? The one and only "World Famous Cornudas Burger". So naturally, that is what I ordered. OH MY GOD! Was it the best burger I ever had? Nah, not quite. Worthy of the name "World Famous"? Most Definitely. It is extremely tasty, and of great size as well. The fries were delicious as well. it was definitely not a meal that you can get at your average fast food joint. As I sit at home typing up this post-meal review, I cannot wait for the next opportunity to stop by and enjoy that meal again. Mae Carson is a sweet woman. We enjoyed the conversation we had with her. I got mad respect for her "No Bullsh*t" attitude. She will make sure everyone is taken care of, but will not put up with any grief in the process. Lastly, check out the attached store. They carry all sorts of knicks and knacks, as well as some of the basic necessities one may need for the road ahead. When we return , we are gonna pick up some of the cool Western decor they have. Mark my words, this will not be my last visit to the Cornudas cafe! read more

This place is fantastic! Quite surprised this place existed in the middle of the desert, surrounded by nothing but scrub brush and fresh air. I was greeted the moment I came in the door by the owner and her staff member. This place has a very home-type feel, as though you just walked into your mother or grandmother's kitchen. Very decorative and is also a store! I had a delicious open face beef sandwich with potatoes. This place is a very welcome respite on the lonely drive along US 62 between El Paso and Guadalupe Mountains NP. I will definitely take 62 to go to El Paso from now on, just to visit this place! Thanks for the good food and hospitality, folks! read more

Would have driven right by this little cafe in this one-horse-town if my wife hadn't been intrigued by the sign touting the "World's Greatest Burger." She was obviously starving, so we stopped. When we went in there was a group of what looked to be locals seated at the table by the door. We were given the traditional "we don't know you" looks as one of a pair of older women got up from the second table and told us to have a seat anywhere we liked. As we moved toward the back of the room, we saw that the back table was littered with dishes left from previous visitors. That left one clean, unoccupied table for us. The proprietors (mother and daughter?) were nice. The mother brought us menus (handwritten on paper lunch bags) and took our drink order. The room is full of old photographs. Unfortunately the one staring up at me from the table was a group of folks in blackface makeup mugging for the camera. I suppose that's acceptable decor out in West Texas. My wife and I each ordered the Cornudas Burger. I have to say, the burger was good, but not outstanding in any way. It was obviously house-made and served on a bolillo. The fries were more of a highlight than the burger; fresh-cut and cooked perfectly. Honestly, the most mind-blowing thing I had was the lemonade! Neon yellow, in a giant mason jar; when it first came out I was a little afraid of it. It just looked so unnatural! But it was delicious; quite sweet, but with a really nice lemon flavor. It didn't taste unnatural at all. I really loved it. Now, be warned; the bathrooms here are horrible, and to get to them you have to walk through the little shop next door, which is a strange, overpriced, thrift store. All together this was a slightly odd, but good experience. I wouldn't hesitate to stop and eat here again, but I can't imagine going out of the way to come here. read more

This is a classic stop! A homey dinner where you can get a great burger, and a piece of pie. Nothing fancy, yet lots of character.

May's Cafe. An excellent stop to grab a small meal, shop around and meet a few excellent people. I am trying to locate their email I had and cannot find. I traveled past Cornudas every other week and always made it my goal to say hello. The burgers are very (!) good, the coffee is just as good, and the company is excellent! While you're there, leave a donation on the "money wall", or a comment under the table-top. I recommend planning your drive between Carlsbad, NM and El Paso around the cafe's open-hours :) I miss everyone I met and I am hoping to return ASAP. For those who like desert travel, or who just want to drive the Guadalupe Mtns. road, this is a stop you have to make. And if you do find the opportunity to stop in, please say "hello" from me, please. Garrick Anderson read more

If you think Cornudas Cafe makes a great burger then I feel so sorry for you. $9 for a very sad terrible burger. I cannot understand all these great reviews. This was easily the worst restaurant and service I have ever experienced. Visit at your own risk. read more
Stopped in this little cafe outside of Guadalupe Nat Park-39mins headed west (don't blink you'll miss it) This cafe has a very polarized ambiance, it's not for everyone either u get it or u don't. For example the place is run down and filled w vintage pics and articles all over the place. Also the legs of the tables are faux cowboy legs, ur waitress is prob the owner and cashier of the place and doesn't really crack a smile. Now some ppl might be offended and think it's rude but I liked it and don't mind that esp. if ur exhausted from a hike(don't talk to me busy eating/drinkn) I ordered the Famous burger and onion rings . My bf ordered the same but w fries and we split them . I'll tell u the sides were made from scratch and served fresh. I loved the fries and onion rings! The burger was flavorful I just wished my hoagie bun was toasted (yes I said hoagie) over all descent and hit the spot. My boy even bought a cookie for .75 cents as his dessert read more

I had been eating at this place for almost 27 years and it had Great Food until Ms May died. Drove down from Las Cruces, NM just to have a World Famous Cornudas Burger and spend an hour or two chatting with Ms May. Great Homemade Desserts and the BEST Giant Homemade Green Chili Burger and more Hand Cut French Fries than you should ever eat was the usual fare. Did this at least twice a month for most of the 27 years and Never Ever was I disappointed in the taste and quality of the food. I stopped going after her death, but recently stopped there on my way back from Carlsbad, to see what her grandson had done with the place. I also had to get my usual burger. It was very disgusting to say the least. The burger was smaller, on an old dry bun and the meat certainly wasn't fresh. The meat was dry and tough and had the consistency of a hockey puck burger and wasn't very flavorful. The tomato was half ripe and the itty bitty piece of Green Chili was not even fresh, and there was no lettuce. Come on, it is the middle of chili season in Hatch and you can't go anywhere without seeing fresh picked green chilies. No excuse. The lumps of potato that were suppose to be fries were few, raw and hard in the middle and dark brown on the outside. I got this "to go", because I wanted to get home. Still had about 2 1/2 hours left on my drive. $14.00 and change was what I paid for this poor excuse for food. I got several mile down the road before I tried my burger and fries. Needless to say, one bite was one bite to many. It ended up in the next trash can I could find. Lost my appetite too. I will never stop in this place again. I either eat in Carlsbad or El Paso. I know Ms May set HIGH STANDARDS but it was obvious that the new proprietor has no standards. Sorry to see such a Jewel in the Desert end up like this. read more

This quirky little cafe is out in the middle of nowhere and we were glad to find it. We had breakfast here on the way to Carlsbad Caverns. My wife & I drove from El Paso to May's Cafe for lunch on Saturday. We were greeted with pleasant Hello's form the owners & immediately felt at home. The homemade burgers are awesome & the hand cut fries were great. We had some nice conversation while there & we left happy & full of great homemade food. We will return. What do you get when you squish NashvilleTN + BransonMO + TombstoneAZ? Cornudas! This is May Carson's place and if you can't hang your hat here, either in the cafe (open everyday except Wednesday and midday Sunday for services) or the adjacent Old El Paso, then you're really hurtin' pardner. Located about 60 miles/88kms East of El Paso on Montana Avenue/US62-180, if you blink you miss it. I love pedaling here because of the food, parking/overnight camping, trinkets/gifts, but mostly because of the people, especially May. My last pedal here was 22-24FEB2013, and it was outstanding albeit a bit difficult returning because of a very stiff Westerly. However, I was super glad to be on my Doublevision tandem recumbent because no internal combustion fuel needed--there is no gasoline available out here! The next CW concert is scheduled for Saturday (every second Saturday of the month), 09FEB2013, 6pm, $8 to include a hearty BBQ meal, too! What a deal! If you've never been here or are a repeater, come on out. You'll love it! read more

We were headed from Carlsbad to ElPaso stopped in to get some food. Two old woman and a boy about 10 or 11 was there, he was holding a small dog. My son was glad to see another kid and so we sit to the table next to theirs the two woman get up. One goes to the kitchen the other waits on us. Neither were friendly. My son starts talking to the boy he seems nervous like he shouldn't be talking to us. Then he tells my son the dog is he only thing that loves him. So we order and are waiting for our food.,Two work-men come in and sit down. A little while latter three people come in, two men and a woman. The young blond man starts eyeing my wallet on the table then one of the lady's tells them if they want to use the bathroom they need to buy something. I can tell she wasn't feeling to good about these people either. This place is in the middle of no where and I was nervous. Something clicked and they left, but I still get nervous thinking about it. It was a tense moment and those people were up to no good. I hope the boy is safe and the food was good from what I remember. I think there are some bad people traveling that road I never did see a cop. Lonesome country, be careful. read more

History
Established in 1929.
Established in 1929 as a post office and later as a cafe, when the post office closed. The Historical Cornudas Cafe has been in continuous operation having only 4 owners through the multiple decades. Perhaps the most well known owner was Mayor May Carson. Since her passing her grandson Jeff Campbell is at the helm. After undergoing an extensive renovation Cornudas Cafe has a new look and the same good food our customers love.

As a New Yorker I have no problem whatsoever with gruffness or brusqueness, but I am surprised that none of the other reviewers thought to mention that May is a hard-right xenophobe and proud member of the Christian jihad. This is evidenced abundantly by the slogans, cartoons, newspaper clippings and photographs lining the walls and affixed beneath the tabletop glass with messages such as 'without god this country is going to hell' and 'Jesus had a problem with illegal immigrants too'. Maybe previous clientele found nothing noteworthy in it, but we found it deeply immoral and ultimately heartburn-inducing. As May wouldn't speak to us from the moment we arrived it was her mirthless daughter who served us, icily, and we had a hard time imagining that our race didn't have something bearing on our treatment. There were no nasty words exchanged but my under-glass placemat told me that I and my kind were unwelcome. We faced quite a dilemma about whether to stay, but as we had just driven one hour from Dell City, whose restaurant was closed that night, it was stay or starve. So we stayed, and though the burgers and fries were indeed good, we left with indigestion and heavy hearts. read more

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. I saw a dog in the kitchen. May came out of the restroom and went straight to the grill, I have no idea if she washed her hands or not. Granted, it's a small out of the way place in the middle of nowhere, but health regulations still apply. read more
