Did you ever get your Dad a nice present? A really, really nice present?
Well John Corning (of the Corning Glassworks Cornings) built this gaudy and opulent fountain as a tribute to his father.
There's a lot going on with this fountain and all of its Indian statues. The statues depict Saukiog Indians (Hartford's first inhabitants) hunting, fishing, and fighting around the base of the fountain. Higher up on the fountain are more Indians of the fairer sex.
If that was all this fountain had, it would be way amazing. But wait, there's more! So what would you expect to find at the top of the fountain, 20 feet up in the air? Why, of course it's a statue of a stag in his full antlered glory. It was known as a "hart", and somehow that has something to do with Hartford and settlers from Hertford, England.
It's all kind of confusing to me...
It's a crazy sight- all of these incredibly fierce looking Indians on a marble fountain, capped off with a deer way up at the top.
Still, this crazy sight is way cool beyond belief!! read more
