We just happened to be right by West Avenue yesterday & completely starving, so we stopped in to check out their lunch fare. The hotel lobby is very well appointed, modern and elegant. The cafe itself, open from 8am to 6pm, has a modern European feel to its interior. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The menu ranges from traditional breakfast items (including kippers?!) to gourmet burgers and sarnies. We had a tuna melt and a gourmet burger with homemade salsa and fries - both very tasty. The Cafe appeared to have a full bar but I didn't really see anyone drinking there at the time, except for coffee - which was fantastic by the way! They also have a very good cake selection. We had a slice of their Beetroot & Hazelnut cake which was suprisingly tasty and moist! (Don't worry, it didn't taste like beetroot at all, but it did have a lovely pink colour). The clientele appeared to be typical Gosforth middle class. The prices weren't cheap but I did feel we got good value and a pleasant experience out of our £20 lunch including drinks and pudding. Definitely will try this place again.

At its Salters Road entrance (as opposed to the High Street entrance) this Mitchells and Butlers…read morepub has a very civilised, really lovely old snug serving real ales and there are no noisy juke boxes or gaming machines in the room. It's a great meeting place and I love it. The clientele who frequent this snug are mainly well-behaved respectable business and professional people- doctors,teachers,managers, architects, lawyers etc - but common old working chaps like me are also welcome. Unfortunately snug customers have to walk through the main bar to share the pretty awful toilets with some pretty awful types who drink in the main bar nowadays. While most of the main bar customers are respectable, there's far too much low life there. One old man often shouts at the top of his voice and bothers strangers by trying to shake their hands,scrounging money and spitting in their faces while introducing himself. His notoriously incontiment companion stinks of urine. My friend tells me a group of incredibly rough, loud female customers began fighting there some time ago and broke glasses one evening. One was arrested later at another pub for assaulting a police officer. A tramp who sleeps on a park bench frequents the bar. He drinks the dregs from glasses left by customers. The licensee allows him to store his rucksack upstairs in their flat. My friend also tells me that a man who was barred for life from ALL the local pubs has returned to drink here regularly. While mocking a severely disabled chap's disability, the man and his son loudly offered to have rough sexual intercourse with the wheelchair-bound disabled man's wife. The lady was terrified. It's a hangout for known local criminals and patients of the local psychiatric hospital too. The food is pretty awful but only complete strangers unwittingly eat in the main bar. My wife and I stopped going to this pub a couple of months ago. It's no longer well-managed in my opinion. The staff would like certain people to be barred, but the absentee licensee (who prefers to serve in the quiet genteel snug) doesn't seem to care. I think M&B have lost the plot here and in the northeast generally - some of their other pubs are pretty awful too. The Gosforth Hotel main bar is best avoided, but the snug is very nice if you can tolerate having to use the toilets. We can no longer bear being in the same toilets as some of the people who frequent the main bar. It's not the cleanest of pubs. From time to time you can smell sewage odours coming from the cellar - there are long standing problems with drains in the pub. Also there is never any soap in the mens' toilet and my wife tells me there's rarely any soap or toilet paper in the Ladies. I'm told M&B have introduced cost-cutting measures to save money on employing cleaners - the bar staff clean the loos first thing in the morning.

But slowly, there are little things that have made me like the place more and more. Sure, it's still average, it isn't going to make for a memorable experience, but it is comfortable and relatively well maintained. I'm in here every week, and it's nice that from the 2nd/3rd week in, the staff knew my name. My previous stay, I barely registered over 3 months of weekly visits. I stay in the superior rooms, which have great showers, and the beds are pretty comfortable. I've even managed to venture into the gym, which, only 3 machines and no cleaning equipment, isn't ideal, but it's OK too. Now the restaurant, it's definitely nothing higher than an OK. The food is very much feels like freezer food rather than particularly fresh, but it's certainly OK enough, although more vegetarian options would be nice. I haven't bothered with breakfast, for the cost, I know as a veggie it won't be worth it (13.95 for breakfast? No way....). Parking costs £5 a night as well, so be prepared. Novotel, it's definitely OK, but sometimes OK is good enough.

We were in town for a Newcastle game and this was conveniently located, reasonably priced, and accommodated the four of us in one room (one king bed and one pull out). It's a gorgeous building which has been lovingly restored in a taseful and stylish way. The gardens are gorgeous, and the setting is great being so close to Jesmond Dene itself. We stayed here once and the room was probably one of the nicest hotel rooms I've ever had. Everything was perfect, right down to the handwritten welcome note from the staff. Secondly, the service is amazing. It's a perfect example of how customer service should be done - staff are polite and courteous, never overly informal. They're always there when you want them, but they never get in the way. And finally, the food. Oh my word... utterly, utterly spectacular. Some of the nicest food I've ever eaten was here. Classic example: my partner hates black pudding and won't eat it anywhere... except at Jesmond Dene House because he implicitly trusts everything they make and he loves it here!

Our room was on the third floor and it was clean, quiet and roomy. Didn't have time to use the large TV but did appreciate the free juice, water & biscuits in the fridge. Our breakfast was OK - you need to go to the adjoining restaurant for it - however it wasn't anything to write home about. You can eat as much as you'd like Inc fry up, continental & cereal but I found it slightly soggy. Still it's a minor niggle. Thumbs up for letting us keep our car there after check out so we could shop without a huge car park fee.

Pictures are on here are a more accurate reflection. I had a double room and it was pretty cramped. Bathroom was extremely dated, and yup, there was mould around the shower. The table and chairs were all worn, stained and chipped. The heat was stifling - think more care home than hotel. I left the windows open during the day to cool the room down - I couldn't adjust the heat. The first evening, the wifi didn't work, and upon calling down to reception I was informed that wifi must be working, else people would be calling to complain...errr, hello? After convincing the receptionist that the wifi may not be working, the duty manager came up to test and confirmed that yup, it was down, and it wasn't the first time that day. Bang went my hopes of working that night. The second night fared better - wifi up for a start, so that was good. However what wasn't so good was the 540 fire alarm because another guest had left a shower running all night. Finally, breakfast. I think I paid an addition 6 quid for continental, which was effecticaly some tinned grapefruit, dry bread for toasting, cereal or some soggy value croissants. For 11 quid I could have had some overcooked hash browns from a buffet. Given that my previous hotel stay was cheaper, comfier and fresh home cooked food... there is no comparison. How hotels like this stay in business I have no idea, but I certainly won't be back. Awful.

It is located on the Osborne Road, just around the corner from the main strip of hotels, bars and restaurants that forms an extension of the city centre. There's a lounge bar and restaurant; the latter takes last orders at 8.30pm, and room service also stops an hour or so later. Inside, the hotel itself is clearly converted from a number of formerly residential properties, with one of those complicated layouts with lots of little bits of corridor and multiple short flights of stairs, and lots of internal fire-doors. On the plus side: it's conveniently located and it offers car parking (albeit limited). The staff were very pleasant and helpful (something on which the hotel prides itself); I was upgraded to a large room without asking; there's good free wifi, and plentiful instant hot water. The bed was very comfy and everything was spotlessly clean. As it happens, I slept very well, although the upstairs floor creaked, so I was glad I'd requested a top-floor room, and the bedroom door could have done with extra sound-proofing. Had their been more numerous or noisier guests staying, it might have been a different story. The cooked breakfast was prepared freshly to order, and offered a good choice (fried bread is a rarity these days) although the cold buffet of cereals, juice and croissants would have been improved by taking the cling film off the containers. That all said, areas of the hotel could do with upgrading. The rooms have been partly refurbished, with new wallpaper and decoration, but the furniture and common parts need further modernisation. The bathroom, although very clean, also needed a refit - the pink suite looked rather tired (the sink was cracked) and although I'm only 5'8", I had to bend my knees to get under the shower head. Essentially, service gets four stars and the hotel decor and fittings get two, so overall three. So, on this occasion, it fitted my purpose, but I'd equally happily try elsewhere next time.

8/11/16 - 2 nights - Business trip…read more I'm in agreement with the other reviewer. I did like the fresh breakfast on a hot plate. I thought the cereal selection was pretty reasonable. First morning given 4 triangles of toast, and then only two the next. I ate in the hotel the first night, and I had the steak and chips. The steak was OK, but the chips tasted really odd. I mentioned it to the chap on the desk on the way (as well as the waitress). He said that they had cleaned the deep fat fryer recently, so I surmised it must be the potatoes. Also, only one red wine available by the glass. Although the wine menu said otherwise. Again, the chap at the desk they were running down the stock to revise the wine menu. He offered to take it off the bill, but I declined, as there was nothing wrong with the wine. Parking is a bit of an issue. First night I was on the road, with a permit. YOU NEED A PERMIT, OTHERWISE NASTY FINE (£80). Next day, people had moved off the forecourt, so I moved my car and returned the permit. The second night I ventured out, and it was amazing how close it was to other places to eat. After, using the satnav to find the curry place that was rated on Yelp..... I go lost several times... as the satnav assumed I was in a car!!!! Anyway, I went by an Italian restaurant on my travels, and made it to the curry house. Then I saw their food standards' agency rating: 3 out of 5. So I gave it a miss and returned to the Italian. Anyway, back to the hotel. The hotel room was pretty basic. I knew I was going to have a single bed, but nearly fell out twice. The bathroom was OK. Plus good power from the shower. No safe in my room, which is pre-requisite, that my booking agent forgot to check. So can't go back on this basis alone. Add to the fact that the rate looked cheap as they hadn't included breakfast.... Not the hotels' fault, but quickly rectified. I still had problems getting to the office from here.... Even though north of the river and closer to the office... Not the hotel's fault, but traffic in Newcastle is a nightmare.
