If you fancy "real" olive oils and delicious wines, that is. You can purchase in bulk if you live in the area or plan to be there for a while and will be doing a lot of cooking. Fill up your jug straight from the vat. And the prices ... nothing like you'll ever see in the states. Oh, the house wines and olive oils are heavenly ... nothing like you'll ever see in the states. I practically made a beeline over to this place. The employees here were super friendly and welcoming although none of them spoke a bit of English. It was so much fun to try out my Italian and communicate with them! I asked the friendly woman at the counter which pastry was her favorite and she pointed to this tasty little chocolate goodie (see photos). It was delicious and not too sweet and was the perfect accompaniment to my espresso. My husband had a latte and loved it too. The shop uses real Illy artist cups (and sells some of the older sets too if you are a collector) and has some locally made Italian candy for sale. In Volterra, you don't have to pay to sit down to enjoy your coffees as you do in the larger cities. It was a welcome change since our feet were exhausted from a long day of walking along the town's cobblestone streets. Stop in and have a tasty espresso and treat if you are in Volterra.

Granita is dairy free, and similar to sorbet, but with a coarser texture. At La Granita, you can get a generous bowl for €2.50 (I couldn't manage to finish it); whipped cream is an additional €0.50. The almond flavor was delicious; the texture was a bit weird (ground almonds), but really tasty. The watermelon and peach were both really fruity and refreshing. They also offer gelato, and the option of getting your granita or gelato on brioche, but I was quite a happy camper with my granita and whipped cream.
