The Tavern - Chatting to the new owner over a cider and the fire

Some days you just have to follow the sunshine, get off the beaten track and see where you land…read more Hopefully you find yourself here at The Daylesford Cidery's The Tavern. What started off as "we'll stop for 1 drink and then go climb a mountain' turned into a lazy 3hr Sunday session. Which only ended because we really had to get home. The staff here are amazingly friendly and helpful. They really know their cider and have a delicious range of locally sourced produce available. Start off with a tasting before you buy a bottle or two. With four distinct varieties it's best to try before you buy. The Tavern area itself is a quaint barn/church hall style building. Big comfy couches, warming rugs and a lot of blue stone. The outdoor area has half a dozen tables and a pizza oven. As well as two very friendly dogs. We'll be back again in winter to sit by the wood fire and drink our cares away.

The surrounds remind me of many English pubs I've visited in the Cotswolds. Claire served us simple but fresh, tasty and local soups she made (spiced pumpkin and chicken&leek), coupled with handmade soughdough bread. Macky built us a fire and chatted about the 18 different varieties of apples used in the 4 different ciders they produce on site. Just brilliant - go!!!

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.

It's the decor from extravagant chandeliers to deer heads with pearl necklaces; it's beautifully eclectic. I had an old fashion and it had the right mix of orange and bitters. I also ordered the burger which was decent and the fries were hot and crispy. The night I visited there was a live singer playing tunes. Service was quick and friendly. Even the ordering is eclectic as you order electronically (QR) pasted to a library book. This place is worth a visit.

Service is typical of a tavern, you go up and order, nothing fancy. Footy playing on a few TV's, newspapers to read, pokies etc. Not a bad little place for a pub meal :)

"...HISTORIC VICTORIAN HOTEL.. SHOCKING REVIEWS..!! HONESTLY.. NOT THAT BAD ~ WOULDN'T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE IT A 'BLOODY GOOD' BISTRO..." Tonight, we met friends, for dinner at the historic WESTMEADOWS TAVERN in Ardlie Street, Westmeadows.. POSITIVES: - Original building - still got the pressed metal ceilings - Comfortable venue - 3 bars - Outdoor area - Good air-conditioning - Heaps o' parking - Seniors discounts - Weekly specials including a Monday $15 Parma night and a Wednesday $19 Steak night - Heaps o' staff - Nice and clean - Drive-thru bottle shop - 2 TV's in the dining area - they had a movie going on one - Pokies TONIGHT'S F & B: 2 x LLB's - Good ones, 1 x Lime Soda - Nice and limey, 1 x Carlton Draught - Cold pint COST: $22 2 x 300gm Porterhouse Steak [1 medium rare and 1 medium], Mushroom Sauce, Steakhouse Chips, Dressed Salad in side dish - Both Steaks cooked to perfection but it was a Mushroom Gravy, definitely not a Mushroom Sauce; Just a handful of chips, and they were a bit of a rough batch - broken and some had blackened ends; Nice dressing on the salad, but such a tiny little serving COST: $31 each 1 x Golden Ale Battered Flathead Tails, Bowl Tartare Sauce, same Chips, same Salad - Nice fresh tasty fish; Batter not too thick; Nice tasting Tartare COST: $22 1 x Chicken Parmigiana, same Chips, same Salad - The parma was delish - Beautifully cooked, thick, juicy, just the right amount of sauce and melted mozzarella COST: $23.50 NEGATIVES: - Whilst proteins were TASTY and WELL COOKED, meal presentation could have been so, so much better... - Meals could be a little larger - I think people out in the burbs expect a more GENEROUS serving - they tend to get a bit disappointed when it's not the case... - Meals could be a little less expensive - they're definitely a bit on the pricey side considering it's just kinda basic pub bistro fare - Hey, I love well cooked basic pub bistro fare, but not really at these prices... - They're not open till late enough - at just prior to 9pm, whilst we were finishing up eating our mains, two sets of people came in and seated themselves, both lots were told the chef had knocked off for the night, and they wouldn't be served a meal - VERY, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL - surely, out of all those staff members, someone should'v been able to step in, as some sort o' basic short order cook, or any sort of cook, for that matter..? Anyway, we were going to order some more drinks, dessert and coffee, but seeing and hearing this.. stopped us dead in our tracks..!! THREE LOTS OF LOST REVENUE ALL WITHIN THE SAME FIVE MINUTES...!!! Anyway, I suppose I'd be willing to go by there again, but Gee Wizz..!!, if they improved themselves..!!, just a little bit.. I'd WANNA GO there again...!!! Visited on Saturday 9 January for dinner with friends.

The thing I love about this place is the huge beer garden out the back, which even has undercover areas for times when it is pelting down with rain. The inside is pretty cool as well, and they even have trivia nights (not that I have ever participated in one). Oh, I also recently discovered that they also have a happy hour, which is also pretty cool. I've got to come here more often.

Strong local presence to take advantage of the lunch specials on offer while chilling with the Sunday arvo game. Quite a few of us got the Parma, I had the torpedo calamari out of curiosity (so named of the shape! Felt a bit silly having to google it). The meals were generous in serving size, especially considering the price. A good section of craft beers, you can even buy a stein to take home. Not many wines on offer, but it is a beer establishment after all. Big beer garden out the back, also a pool table inside available. Serviceable and fit for purpose as a friendly local.

Michelle had excellent advice regarding the menu and catered to my requests. Extra tables, table cloths on all the tables and the open area closed off. A fabulous grazing table under a tree inside the room, was ready upon arrival. Platters of food came out regularly. The event ran seamlessly. Everyone was impressed with the food, the service and the function room, the Vinery. We were fortunate to have lovely weather which really suits the Vinery with the atrium and grapevines adding to the atmosphere. Rather, I was expecting to just find one of those new, and rather boring, pubs. It turned out not to be the case, though their selection of beers were rather limited.
