This is a fantastic Co-Op that we visit frequently when we are vacationing in the area. I love their granola mix for cereal. It is a bit more spendy than a normal grocery store, but you are paying for organic and for quality. To me it is worth it. Their COVID procedures are a bit more intense than he average, but you understand why when you are in the store with narrower aisles and smaller space overall. I love this co-op and intend to continue to be a customer for many vacations to come. read more

There are a great high end and health food items here with a great selection of produce! When we couldn't find something at the other grocer's, I was able to pick it up here. I also was really happy that they have a great selection of local made breads and pastries! They have a great protocol for COVID and each shopper gets a number (and a select number is allowed in), after you are done the cart is it is sanitized thoroughly! This is not "Whole Foods" just in case you are confused by the name. It is a small community owned co-op packed with all the goodness of local, organic, healthy, sustainable foods. There is a deli section where you can buy sandwiches and salads and some fresh cookies, bars and muffins. These are the things you care about on vacation when you are tired of restaurants and don't want to cook. We actually came here looking for a fresh made pie. They didn't have one, BUT the manager took us to the frozen section and pointed out a carrot cake made by a local bakery. (That bakery wasn't open on Sunday and that's why we were here.) We were a little hesitant because we were looking for pie, but the manager was so confident we would like it, he took a slice from the deli section and brought forks over for us to try it. Of course after the taste test we were delighted to buy the entire frozen cake and he let us finish the slice for free! Talk about service! As good as it gets in Grand Marais! read more

Considering Grand Marais is a small town, this food co-op is impressive. They stock a little bit of everything and their produce is excellent right now (July 2019)! We are vegan and we found everything we needed to cook for ourselves for a week up north. We also found their amazing homemade cherry granola bars and banana with chocolate chip cookies made fresh and found in their bakery case! Better vegan baked goods than most options elsewhere! If you are transitioning to planted-based diet, they also stock Beyond Meat products, non-dairy milks and cheeses. read more

The last time I was here was about 5 years ago, and it looks great! Must have done a pretty big remodel! Anyway, great store, decent prices, awesome bulk section, and super helpful and informative staff! The person who helped my boyfriend and I pick out a maple syrup will forever have my gratitude, don't know if I've ever had such an amazing, almost smokey and rich maple syrup before. Great co-op for a little town. But I am reviewing their deli, specifically their soups. In the fall or winter when a lot of the restaurants are closed, this becomes one of the best restaurants in town. They have great soups. I really like their Muligatawny, white bean and veggie with sage and their sweet potato and black bean chili. In the fall when the town is quiet and the temps are cold, stop in here for a bowl of soup with a cheddar biscuit or cornbread. Excellent! If soup isn't what you want there is a wide variety of deli sandwiches and salads and some classic ethnic choices (eg, pad Thai). Their guac is excellent and fresh as well. read more

after eating donuts and caribou eyes for two days, we were ready for a breakfast at our Croftville Cabins (whose kitchen is all ready for makin a meal). So here we came for some fruit, granola, cereal, juice, whatever. The place is small, but they really pack it in and organize it nicely. Are you looking for good cheese? How about organic food? How about maybe locally grown things? Or a unique item you can't find anywhere else in town (that you swear you could find in a average grocery store in the cities). This is the place. It has moved around town since I was a kid. But it has always been a hub for a unique more earthy people of GM and those that travel through. They have a yummy bulk section and even have some quality items in their deli case. As a kid this was a great place to go to get a treat (healthy treats especially as I was raised kinda granoally) and as an adult who has moved back here from the cities and likes to cook up the things she misses this is the place to get the goods. I say swing in as a tourist and grab something yummy to snack on for a ride in the car, a picnic on the beach, or for a hike. If your like me and even when on vacation cook up fun meals at the cabin....this might be the place to get yummy things to make that meal more special. read more

I had to stop into this co-op since I'm a big fan of natural grocers and co-op's alike. We didn't really need to buy much of anything but overall the quality and variety of the produce section seemed good except for the stone fruit and citrus. A little worn around the edges. :-/ The bulk section was a beaut! (I'm also a bulk section nerd - must see Seward Co-op if you're down with bulk shopping!) I've been to a lot of NCGA (National Co-operative Grocers Association) co-op's and they all usually have the same sales and products... it was great to see a variety of products here, especially in the bulk snack section! Wild rice sesame sticks? Yum! Pretty expansive for the size of the store. The cheese selection was modest but I found my fav goat spread. I even tried out a packaged item I had never seen before: Food Should Taste Good pita puffs, chive flavor. I ate the whole bag on the drive home! Thanks co-op! Overall, this place is small but it looks like it has had a remodel or is going through one because it all seemed very clean and organized. It was refreshing to find local products of the North Shore region that I wasn't familiar with. If I'm in town again, I'll be sure to stop in to get my groceries here and cook up some healthy meals. read more

My partner and I try to visit Grand Marais at least once a year. It's always fun. Once we stayed in the East Bay Suites, which was quite spendy but which included a kitchenette. So we "balanced the fiscal scales" by buying food at the co-op and staying in to cook most of the nights-- then the last night we went out to Angry Trout Cafe. Even when we are staying at Nelsons Travelers Rest, though, it's great to come to the little Cook County Co-Op to get a little something. We bought a container of their garlic pasta-- WOW did that have garlic in it! But it was great, just what we wanted. It's a great resource for the town to have, I think. I mean, Johnson's Foods is great too-- but the granola-crunchy vibe (and the good food) of the co-op is good stuff. Also, could I maybe use the word "great" a couple more times? Yeah, that'd be great. ;-) read more

Pretty awesome little organic/local grocery. This is what I like to imagine Whole Foods started out as... you wouldn't think that the selection would be so good based on the size of the place, but I was surprised over and over. We only stopped in to get a couple necessities - like fresh-brewed coffee - but it'd be a good place to stock up for a camping trip or a night in if your hotel has a kitchen. read more

Better than ever in a brand new building in the same location as the last one. A great selection of quality food just like most co-op stores. The new building opened in 2013. One of the best items is their house made granola. Perfect balance of sweet & hearty. No weird/fake ingredients either. You can find it in the bulk bins. During a recent stop prior to a Gunflint Lodge stay, we picked up some groceries here. As Nordic K. mentioned, this is a great cooperative for a small town like Grand Marais. The produce is fresh and good quality. Purchased some Supersweet variety apples which are delicious and local (Bayfield). Staff knowledgeable and helpful. Such a terrific food co-operative, this from a member of food co-ops around the country since 1970. Andrew & Co. run a tight ship, track member requests, are always on the hunt for the next great shelf product, read those ingredients lists with a magnifying glass, and bring in the best of the local produce in season. This is one of the few true nexus sites of the upper North Shore: like the Grand Marais Public Library and the North House Folk School, this is where we find our community friends and neighbors as well as the many, many visitors who have found their way to a wonderful source of good eating. read more

We stayed at the Best Western right next door and the co-op is a great way to not spend the weekend in restaurants and thus save a bundle. Plus they have a nice selection of sandwiches, nuts, granolas, cookies, drinks and more. One improvement would be made-to-go sandwiches (although they do have a soup or chili of the day). Note that your co-op membership from the Twin Cities will probably not be reciprocal with this place, for what that's worth. And PS, the staff is nice. read more

Great health food store- amazing honey and spread selection

My husband and I try to visit Grand Marais every summer. Wherever we stay, we always visit this Co-op! The last few times, we have stayed at East Bay Suites, and it has become a tradition to have the Co-op's wonderful Granola for breakfast everyday. Here it is wintertime, and I was just thinking about how I wished I had some of that granola here at home. They also have wonderful produce, organic soaps, maple syrup, cheeses, you name it! Lots of things are available in bulk. I would recommend this place for anyone staying in Grand Marais, or stocking up for the BWCAW, or just to pick up some wonderful things to bring back home with you. And don't forget the granola!!! read more

What a treat to stop here and get bocconcini, pesto and baby tomatoes, Kombucha and my greek yogurt and raspberries I love so much. Here we are, far away and on the edges of civilization and on the cusp of the BWCA in a town of 1,400 and there's an organic, wholesome food store. OMG! I went to Grand Marais recently for a short trip and this co-op was so wonderful to us! We ate all our meals "out" there rather than eating at the overpriced restaurants in town that are just trying to sucker tourists into eating crappy, disappointing food at $20 a plate. I also bought groceries here to cook in my room over at the East Bay Suites, which is next door to the co-op. We will be repeating our trip to Grand Marais and our patronage at the co-op again soon! read more
