Do NOT use Jason Bailey with Construction Elements. If you aren't a big reader, here are the cliff notes: * Slow * Lack of communication * Not detail-oriented * Unable to make recommendations Call CW Home Improvements. We wanted to use Charles, but he was booked up. Little did we know, we could have just waited until he was free and probably still finished faster and at a higher quality. Unfortunately, that decision caused more issues than we could have imagined. SLOW We kicked off on Sept. 1. Jason said 3 weeks to order and receive materials followed by 3 weeks of install. Knowing contractors are always slow, we added a couple weeks and mentally prepared for early November. Thanksgiving came - still a construction site. December baby shower came - still a construction site. Christmas came - still a construction site. 2023! - still a construction site. THEY BUILT AN ENTIRE HOUSE DOWN THE STREET DURING THIS TIME. Jason didn't "finish" our project until January, which delayed several other aspects of work on our home in preparation for our 2nd child. Luckily my wife isn't writing this review... LACK OF COMMUNICATION Easily the most frustrating part of this process was lack of communication from Jason. His first mistake was telling us it was a 6-week job. Aside from that, we were constantly chasing him for updates. With a toddler and a dog, we wanted to be prepared for when we'd have people in our home. But we'd hear nothing for days at a time. We'd chase him by text, phone and, toward the end, email so we could fully document the process. If you want someone attentive that will give you a good handle on timelines, look elsewhere. NOT DETAIL-ORIENTED Where to begin. Start to "finish," this was a brutal process. A few highlights below. * The entire point of the project was to match one area to the house to another than had already been redone. This included floating walls that gave a flat appearance. He had his drywall guys come and make repairs, but they didn't complete the walls. He scheduled painters for the following day, and we had to speak up (another delay). He said "I didn't think you'd want it that way" even though that was the entire goal of the project. * His guys installed 1x6 baseboards in our bedroom rather than 1x4s (to match the rest of the house). Then Jason asked if we wanted to keep it with a straight face. We assume this was an effort to save some time on labor. * His drywall guys also didn't remove a temporarily light on the ceiling so they had to return another time to fix this issue (another delay). Even after returning, this still looks subpar. * His wood floor team left a hole in the floor on the transition to a doorway. I called this out to Jason on our final walk through, but it was not fixed. Which leads me to... * Get ready for a lot of caulk. Several areas were very sloppily completed, so we have an abundance on caulk on our new trim and baseboards. * I lost track of how many times the painters had to come. Their work was also very sloppy. At one point they even painted over a damaged hole (from carpet install) with the wrong color. His install team also damaged some existing paint in a bathroom, but that wasn't part of the project so we'll be fixing that ourselves. UNABLE TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS We admit not everyone needs this because they are working with designers, but don't count on Jason to provide any input. He'll (almost) do exactly what you ask without thought. We even told Jason when we got started - make recommendations! We gave him an opening to expand the scope of the project. We offered a couple suggestions (such as a 5-foot floating shelf), but of course none of those things happened. This was especially obvious in our laundry room. When we had a competitor come out to give us a bid, he quickly identified that some plumbing would have to be moved in order to install a new utility cabinet. While our utility cabinet sat in the garage for a month, Jason...not a word. Then when it came to sink installation, he informed us the sink wouldn't fit. His suggestion was simply to cut the sink cabinet since nobody will see it. So, I called in a separate plumber and paid out of pocket to get it done (the very next day) so Jason couldn't use it as an excuse to delay us further. Do it right or do it fast. Jason does neither. In fairness, his lack of recommendations could have been in part because he sensed how horrible the project was going, he didn't dare add anything to it. But he also didn't scope out these things in the initial bid. Oh, and he installed a door to our garage without a deadbolt. Who does that?! Bottomline - if you don't know exactly what you want, it's best to go with another contractor. CONCLUSION Our project was small comparatively, but it was still a year of private college tuition. If Jason didn't have the time or attention, he should have told us up front. But really, just don't use Jason Bailey with Construction Elements. read more
