I took a Kabbalah 101 seminar that was fascinating. This is not Madonna's Kabbalah. It was a 6 hour seminar on a Sunday. I am Jewish, and it is important to me that this class is taught by a rabbi. There were people in the class who are not Jewish, and it is not necessary to be a Jew to take the class. Rabbi Benamou has an amazing intellect and teaches the history with dates and names, never looking at a note. He is passionate about the history of the transmission of the Torah to the Jews, as well as the significance of the Oral law and how it was passed through generations. I could go on about the rest of the teaching, but the most important thing is, that if you are curious about Kabbalah regarding death, reincarnation, resurrection, heaven, hell.....etc., these questions get quite specifically answered. I went on to take the Kabbalah 102 class. It was the first time the Rabbi presented 102 as a seminar. We got carried away with the prophets and sages, and had to come back a second time to finish the seminar. I didn't mind and I'm still impressed enough to consider taking other classes.

He started studying Kabbalah when he was 8 years old In Israel. His wife Ruthie also teaches Hebrew in a way that even I could understand. I feel like family when I go to Friday night dinner and Shabbos lunch that he has every week and is open and free to all. I have made many friends as well because they made me feel so welcome even though I didn't know anyone when I started attending classes and when I have the opportunity to go on Shabbos or holidays. I enjoy it because it is…read morea small and friendly learning center that welcomes Jews from all backgrounds - secular, reform, conservative and orthodox. There are regular Shabbat services for Friday nights and Saturdays and classes throughout the week, including on Shabbat for those who don't want to go to the regular services. Everything is beginner friendly, but robust enough for a regular synagogue attendee. Highly recommend, especially for the High Holidays, when they bring in great speakers from around the world.

What I really like about it is the flexibility they have for services. As a healthcare provider, I work most weekends and a lot of Sundays. I like that they provide both online services and Saturday evenings. I will say though, the auditorium where most of the services are held is quite odd. Doesn't feel like a church and there's a random disco ball in the ceiling. The rest of the church however is beautiful.

So... yes, I didn't do that... continue studying Hebrew. Really, it was for one reason, and one reason only. I would have loved to learn how to speak the language. I've always been fascinated with linguistics and languages. It's because when you're in Hebrew school, all your learning is prayers that you will have to say at your Bar Mitzvah. You're not really learning what the prayers mean. So, why did I give Washington Hebrew 4 stars. I think it did an adequate job of preparing me for Bar Mitzvah. Plus the facility is beautiful. The school itself is very open and pretty and well maintained. The parking lot is huge, it's in a nice neighborhood, and I can't remember having a bad teacher there. I remember learning how to saw Hebrew words, and learning how to read Hebrew prayers, but not much else. I always remember I thought it was weird that all the teachers would speak English to one another... why wern't they speaking Hebrew? It was Hebrew SCHOOL after all! Immerse us in the language peoples!

We looked around the area for pre-schools for my son and though we found a few that are very good option, once we visited this school, it was an easy decision to go wit RJWECC. The teachers, the facility, the administrative staff, all were leagues ahead of the other places on our list. My son has been going to RJWECC for some time now and I still stand by our decision to pick this pre-school for him.

Rabbi White and Reverend Julia are fabulous spiritual leaders who embrace our family for what it is - blended. We have enjoyed the Gatherings and Sunday School for the kids. The teachings and services include traditions from both sides without alienating one group or another. Hearing the Rabbi do the Easter sermon was something I will never forget. The community not only accepts and understands the choices we've made for our family, but has lived them and gives us a place to really own them. An added bonus to having Sunday School directly following services, is the Adult education groups that are held, which I consider to be an added value, and spiritually enriching. To put things in perspective, neither my husband nor I went to church or temple with any regularity mainly because it was something we weren't completely comfortable doing together. IFFP has not only given us a place to do that, but now we attend almost weekly.

Sunday gatherings are led by a wonderful minister and Rabbi, as well as by the community. It is a project, ever evolving, and classes range from preschool to a fabulous coming of age program in grades 7/8. We love having a place to come on Sundays where everyone in our family is valued and comfortable.
