Har Shalom is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue. My family chose it because of the clergy, community, preschool, and facilities.
The Rabbi is very warm, and great with our children. He came to the synagogue shortly before we did and has made a long term commitment to the community. The Hazzan has been there for something like 20 years. He is a great presence at services and leads a weekly sing along with the preschool kids. The education director is also a rabbi, and has published some great children's books to boot.
My wife grew up at a rather large Conservative shul and was looking for something a bit smaller... But not too small. We felt very welcomed by the community as we shopped for both a school for our two year old and a long term shul for us. I enjoy the diversity there. I've seen quite the mix of backgrounds, religious leanings, politics, and so forth.
The preschool was a key consideration for us. The school is very intimate, with small classes but an overall good community feeling of its own. We wanted, and have received, a good early religious foundation for our daughter. And we always feel confident that she is well cared for and safe.
Finally, we love the main sanctuary. It is a grand, airy, and bright environment very conducive to worship. There are plans to update the social hall and other common areas the near future. read more
