They now have a fabulous Cantor, who's set up a Choir where they stood with him (AMAZING) and sang, then the Cantor invites the members to join in-like the Rabbi, totally without artifice. I've been to Bar Mitzvahs there of my nephews and nieces, I've been to sad services marking my brother's Death and Yartzeit and also for the High Holidays. I find the Sermons to be worthwhile and the sound system is first rate. There are many 'international' members-if that's the word. Anyhow, it is a comforting place and I recommend it.

On Saturdays, there are services in the main Sanctuary, Tot Shabbat in the classrooms and Junior Congregation upstairs. Rabbi Alder is really smart and his sermons are always insightful and leave you wanting more. Cantor Yager trained as an opera singer and has a beautiful voice and is lively and engaging.

The building is very warm and the people very gracious. Since it was summer time the congregants told me the crowd was smaller than normal but we found them to be very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful venue for events with a well established onsite caterer who provides delicious food. Iespecially like the tasty hors d'oeuvres & yummy desserts. Plenty of parking.

We met many nice families from Springfield and the neighboring towns. My daughter had a beautiful Bat Mitzvah, and three years later, out son also excelled at his Bar Mitzvah. They each got a great Jewish education and developed close bonds with other Jewish kids. My daughter went on to become USY (United Synagogue Youth) president, and my son, USY membership vice president. They each enjoyed the Temple's Teen Institute, which was their decision to attend. Bottom line, Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael was an important part of their growing up. I highly recommend joining this synagogue for the social aspect as well as the religious one. Now that my husband and I are "empty nesters" we enjoy participating in the Friday night international themed dinners following the lively Shabbat services. And I have become active in Women's League where I've gotten friendly with many women from town who previously were just acquaintances.

When I had a crisis in my life, I've always had a Rabbi to turn to. When I was looking to put down new roots in 2012, I found out that there was a wonderful conservative synagogue in Hoboken and went to become excellent friends with him and his family. In 2016, my family and I moved to Bayonne as Hoboken was pricing us out ($4500 for a 2-BR seemed like a bit much). I have had numerous health issues and was not able to attend high-holiday services in 2016. Imagine my surprise when the Rabbi from Temple Emanu El came to my door to blow the Shofar and say the prayers with me. He took a break in-between services to do this for me. FOR ME?? How lucky I felt that day and how, to this day, I have NEVER forgotten such a deed. Like other reviewers, I am not a fan of how Reform Judaism conducts their services. No dis-respect to them, but I don't like the pipe organs, I don't like the abbreviated prayers, etc. Reform Judaism is wonderful for some, but others want something more traditional. Orthodox Judaism has always presented to be too rigid. Women can't sit with the men, Shabbat MUST be observed in full tradition, you can't drive to services, etc. etc. Conservative Judaism meets in the middle. Yes, you can have the traditions of the same Judaism you had when you were little, but not everything is SO rigid. You can breathe, sit with your wife, your sister, your daughter, your mother and be welcomed with open arms. You can recite the prayers in full as they are meant to be said and also include women in the them. It's a traditional, pluralistic, egalitarian version of Judaism that I have always loved. Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This porridge is cold, this porridge is too hot, this one.. this one is just right. That's what I love so much about the United Synagogue of Hoboken and that's what my family and I experienced at Temple Emanu El in Bayonne. You and your family are welcome to enjoy as much traditional Judaism as you wish to enjoy.

Most Jews have never heard of Reconstructionism, although many non-Orthodox Jews share the values it espouses. If you are looking for a warm, caring, intellectually curious and meaningful Jewish experience I think you should visit WES and see if it can meet your spiritual needs. I only wish they would open a satellite branch in Northern Westchester.

It's true; I'm a fan…read more FIrst, the gripes. No one said hello or good shabbes to me when I walked inside. We did not say a misheberach (healing) prayer. The Rabbi and Chazan / Cantor-guy never introduced himself as far as I can remember. There were not that many people there and I felt strange being one of the few single women there. One man took it upon himself, to scorn SF and while I'm trying to find him endearing (it is Shabbas and all), it made me want to belt him. Oh and services were at 6:30pm so I didn't have time to eat dinner beforehand. The good stuff: People wore jeans and women wore Kippot!! Once I said hello and Gut Shabbes, most people responded with hearty welcomes. They asked me questions and tried to help me find their ex-interim Rabbi when I went back to SF. There was a big rainbow flag that seemed to wink at me when I approached the shul. The songs were beautiful. The Cantor-guy had the most AMAZING voice and the Rabbi also had wonderful vocal power. The Rabbi was female and the service was egalitarian. She had a lovely way of involving the congregation and inviting us to meditate a bit. Plus, the people I sat next to were sweethearts. All in all, I am glad I went and I would go again.
