This is a must on any tour of the city's historic center. If you've never tried a pastel de Belem, these are almost as good as the ones that I ate in Portugal and certainly have an authentic colonial feel. I really enjoyed the layout which allows you to see the baking process up close. Sit upstairs and enjoy the view of the cute little plaza and historic buildings for any lovely morning or afternoon treat.

Now considered São Paulo's definitive Portuguese Bakery, five locations throughout the capital offering guests a bounty of sweets and savories beginning at 09h00 Monday through Saturday, it is over two stories that Casa Mathilde's flagship location stretches, level one comprised of cases expanding back to a display kitchen with comfortable seating along the sides. Popular to the point of filling floor two during lunch, a lack of Portuguese-fluency doing diners a disservice as staff is impatient even with the store 3/4-empty, it is recommended that guests obtain a marker upon entry and take a long look before ordering, as at least five-dozen items that change seasonally comprise Casa Mathilde's daily collection. Offering classics in addition to items targeting Brazilians and tourists, French Toast easily identifiable alongside Donuts labeled Bola de Berlim, it was alongside the latter stuffed with Dulce de Leche that five additional items were selected, the Portuguese Egg Custard flakey but a bit over-baked while "Pastel de São Bento" utilizes the same Shell but fills the center with finely ground Nuts and Sugar. On to Charniqueiras next, the taste and texture reminiscent of Brazil's Quindim Pudding beneath a caramelized top, it is inside Mathilde's eponymous Queijada that guests will find the taste of Citrus amidst granular consistency, the same forming the center of small orbs topped in Golden Walnuts with a crackling shell that makes one want to immediately book a flight to Sintra.

I really wanted to like St. Ettiene...really, I did. We stumbled upon it late one weeknight when…read morealmost all other restaurants in this sleepier side of Jardim Paulista were closed. I liked the sidewalk tables, I liked the fact it is open 24 hours. I liked that it had TV' showing football and a little store inside. That's where the liking stops. I have given this place numerous chances and always have a bad experience. The waiters range from detached lethargy to downright anitpathy towards the customers. We were asked to leave once while playing dominos outside *while having desert*. Not a group of drunks gambling, just a couple eating petit gateu and drinking espresso. Another time the had the same show on 6 different TV's, noone was watching any of them, and they staunchly refused to change the channel *to the copa confederacoes game*. They refuse to serve you half creme de manga and half acai, even if you offer to pay for the more expensive item. The forget the maionese every time. The salmon is served raw (no not the sushi) and the 3 real salad is just depressing. Their buffet uses store bottled salad dressing. AND IT'S NOT CHEAP! Aside from the personal affronts to my palate and person, the concept is just far too ambitious to ever work (coming from a former line chef as well). You can't serve Pizza, Sushi, Grill items, Salads, Pastries, Burgers, comida tipica, buffets, etc. ALL FROM THE SAME TINY KITCHEN 24/7. Bela Paulista can pull it off because it is a friekin' well-oiled machine...but these guys, no way. It's all sub-mediocre to downright nasty. Unless it is late at night, you are starving -- and are too drunk or tired to walk another few km's to Bela Paulista -- just do yourself a favor and SKIP this place. The somewhat charming ambience is spoiled by bad costly food and worse service. I don't blame the waiters mind you, as a former waiter myself I acctually sympathize with them as the look real, real unhappy and underpaid. But at the end of the day, this is consistently one of the worst places I have eaten in this lovely city full of GREAT restaurants!
