You can drop in on a Lazy Sunday afternoon for some deep fried Camembert, a schnitzel and a pint. However. For 2 weeks in September this place goes off. Concordia Club plays host to one of the best Oktoberfest celebrations in Sydney. Croquet Lawns disappear under a huge beer tent. Extra bars are set up. Pork knuckle...!! P..o..r..k.. K..n..u..c..k..l..e..!!!! Not yet understanding my meaning yet? Kannst du Deutsch sprechren? No?? Even if you can't speak German, this totally awesome roast pork knuckle, served with a heap of German side dishes, speaks plenty. Served piping hot with a knife thrust through the crisp, glistening crackling, wafting up with a bit of Bavarian brilliance, this is a meal! You could say that I enjoyed it.... though... it would be more correct to suggest that I devoured it...! :-) I love food like this. Simple flavours done really well. Oh... did I mention beer? Perhaps having Warsteiner, DAB and Erdinger on tap might spark some interest? Let me just suggest from the offset that you take a train here (Tempe station is across the road), and *cough* properly research the available beer, you will not regret it... :-) P.S. I love me an Oktoberfest; have ever since I did the real one in Munich in 2000. As it happens there's a German club - the Concordia Club - here in Tempe just around the corner from my place. And, as any good German club should be expected to do, they hold their own Oktoberfest celebrations over two weekends. A few friends and I went over back in September. It was better than I expected: they had the dancers, band, tent, tons of German food, big beer glasses, and crazy felt and goat hair hats. The band switched between polkas and pop tunes effortlessly. It was a fun, beer-drinking singalong. But you don't need to wait for that special occasion. You can go any time. German beer on tap, huge roast pork knuckle and cabbage: available here whenever you want them. It may surprise you to know, that on any given day other than Oktoberfest, the Concordia club is open for business. A popular Oktoberfest venue for Inner Westies, but did you know you can get all that same delicious pork knuckle, sauerkraut and the trimmings on any given weekend? Yes you can. but only Sat and Sunday. Beers are still quite pricey. On Oktoberfest you get a big glass Stein.But on regular days you get a regular schooner, for the same price per ml. The owner operator told us his story of where he is from in Germany. "Turn right at Dusseldorf and keep going.." I guess he thought we'd have no fathom of not popular small German hamlets. He is also a Schnapps connoisseur. He let us sample one of his finest, and explained that this stuff "doesn't give you a headache". It was some good strong and clean schnapps, thats for sure. There is an extensive selection of flavours behind the bar including one I preffered, Plum. On occasion I have seen groups of Hipsters try and make a move on the place and claim it as some kind of cool before it was cool, venue. One thing I like more about the German owner, is he is no nonsense in a proficient German way. The staff seem to make it pretty clear when they are fed up with Zeitverschwenders. read more

Here at the Concordia it's all about Beer, food and dancing from time to time. It's the Old Tempe bowling club that was taken over by The Concordia when it moved from Stanmore many years ago. I have been coming here for years on & off ..... the fact my mum frequents this establishment is a big reason why it's been more off than on. God bless my mum but her un relenting obsession to want to dance with me on the dance floor to old German folk music ...... has put me off ..... I just find the embarrassment too much at my age. Besides all that messy business .... you can bring your four legged mate, bring the kids and let them loose on the bowling greens to run and run and run until they are ready to collapse and make your night bliss!!!. The Beer ..... German as well as many other Aussie favorites are available ..... in middy size to Stein size ..... the food the same German & Aussie Fav's ...... something for everyone. As far as space goes .... that too has plenty of ..... although it's recommended to reserve in advance if you have a large group you wish to accommodate. read more

We went there this afternoon with a bunch of other families.. When it started to get dark and a shower kicked in, we all headed inside. The staff weren't good with kids.. even though there was plenty of space in the venue, there were also plenty of rules that meant the children pretty well couldn't move. We were approached several times by staff over mostly trivial issues related to the kids. The most comical moment was when some of the younger children were playing with a toy car each near the empty stage. A staff member came and put a sign directly near the children which said the children couldn't be there, and then walked off without saying anything to us.. So.. probably best not to go if you have kids who like to play - the club is not very kid friendly. The beer was nice though and the steak was tasty and cooked to order. read more

In my view the club is most child friendly I noted in of the comments that there are "plenty of rules" Please take into consideration that such rules are in keeping with the law and breaches could well result in serious problems for the club. There is also a duty of care, should a child suffer a mishap, the club would held accountable. Yes there are rules, rules that are in accordance with the licencing laws of NSW and rules in order to minimise any risk to children, petty as they might seem. read more
