I almost gave Dr. Conaway 2 stars only because he was willing to stay late/after hours one evening in order to allow me to bring in what I felt was a dog emergency.
However, he did absolutely nothing for the dog other than a cursory exam and a vague explanation of "wait and see - either the dog will die or it won't" (I'm not kidding!) No x-rays (which would have been called for in this type of situation), no pain meds for the dog, etc.
I gave him another chance when I discovered he was the only one within 30 miles that castrated equines. I brought in a pony mule (smaller than a regular pony - about the size of a donkey). He seemed very uncomfortable with him, had a lot of difficulty giving him a shot (granted, this particular animal WAS giving him a hard time but was half the size of a horse) and he had help (my daughter) holding him (in addition to a twitch). No one from the office staff was available (or perhaps willing) to help.
After giving him multiple shots (possibly in the vein but probably not) of Rompin and Kettamin (and him repeatedly saying he'd given him enough to kill a horse - how comforting! - the mule would not lie down for the surgery. He finally gave up (although he had threatened to load him back up way before then because he couldn't give him a shot). He charged me $25 for the shots that were useless but did help load the mule back in the trailer.
He has a terrible office/bedside manner, is not good with people and really does not impress me as being all that great with animals. Definitely do NOT utilize him for large animal needs.
My personal preference for SMALL animals is Dr. Edwards (also in Savannah, but located at the Hardin County Veterinary Clinic) where the staff is caring, kind, compassionate and simply wonderful to deal with! He no longer does large animals but you'll be glad you found him.
Addendum: Dr Bell, in Waynesboro, had no problems with the mule and is far better equipped to handle a castration than Dr. Conaway. read more
