This beautiful hill top town in Umbria is a great destination if you want to small town Italian experience. About 2 1/2 hours train ride from Rome, it has beautiful views, windy cobblestone streets, and several great churches including the Basilica of St. Francis, one of Italy's patron saints. The Basilica is what most people come to Assisi for but I found the town itself very charming.
There are many B&B hotels and restaurants in town. Getting around is pretty easy. A one-day waking your can cover most of the points of interest.
