I went there with a friend in order to enjoy the climate, the landscape, the food, and the wine. We wanted something intrinsically French, but not on a national or Parisian level. Arbois, in the Jura department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region delivered! The natural landscape is a bit of a valley surrounded by hills and some small mountains, along with prominently featured markers of prominent citizens of the past, including Louis Pasteur. A very small locale, with a population of only 3,500, the village nonetheless features world class food from restaurants, and very fine wine and cheese and meat and charcuterie. We were a bit troubled at the way people park their vehicles on a main road, a few feet over the pedestrian way (presumably this was illegal) and make it very hard to pass where a pedestrian belongs, between the vehicle and a building. I had to walk out into the street to get by a van, as I and my suitcase simply wouldn't fit. I would also note that people with dogs ought to clean up after them. There is just way too much dog doodoo (poop, shit, call it what you will) on the sidewalks in squares, and places where people walk. I guess it is just French to let your dogs roam, but thinking internationally, that's just not a good practice. If you want to let your dog wander, put a diaper on it! The streets were otherwise pretty clean and tidy, and the Cuisance River flows through the village affording some splendid views and the sound of running water, which seemed to be "high" when I was there. Interesting to me, one of my uncles was in the American Army division which liberated Arbois in 1944, as World War II was coming to an end. Although we certainly didn't see any, the coat of arms for Arbois is a Pelican on a nest with chicks. Being so far east in France, the culture is perhaps accurately called a bit more Germanic than most of the rest of France, the beer being quite nice, and the food quite amazing.
