They call it "the Pinoy Standup Revolution." This group is at the forefront of spreading standup comedy in the Philippines! They're making the rounds in Manila and even outside the capital with a truly different kind of comedy. Definitely not your comedy bar humor type thing.
A friend took me to see them once at an open mic night in Craft Katipunan (that's one more thing, they hold regular shows in nice cafes and bars around the metro!), and it was one of the most entertaining live shows I'd ever seen! I remember just laughing and laughing the whole night! It was great because it was more a display of wit and originality. They're totally rebranding Pinoy comedy. And it wasn't alienating, you know? The acts weren't just shaped for a certain kind of audience profile. Everybody could find something funny.
It was good because they could articulate themselves really well in both English and Filipino. These guys are professionals after all with comedy awards from abroad (yes it's a whole industry pala!), and what's cooler is they have day jobs too! Some are writers in local TV networks, some are ad execs, there's even a lawyer I think. Haha! At the open mics, you have the actual Comedy Manila group with a host (who has his own bits too), a couple of front acts, and whoever's headlining for the night, and then you have guests who've signed up to try it out themselves. It's such a fun, inclusive community and you'll just always have a great time when you catch a show!
Check their website for the changing show schedules and locations (they do special events like University tours sometimes!), but they do have regular spots like The Keg, Fort Strip in BGC on Mondays. read more
