The Sour Bì Was the Last Straw I've had both good and bad experiences with Pho Newark Com Tam Thanh over time, and for a while I considered it a decent, average place to grab Vietnamese food in the area. I also tend to give restaurants multiple chances before leaving a negative review because I understand that every place can have an off day. Unfortunately, I've now seen enough of a pattern that I'm done. Today I ordered the Combination Cơm Tấm and was utterly disappointed by the drop in quality. The bì (shredded pork skin) smelled sour and was completely mushy, despite the meal having just been purchased. It genuinely seemed spoiled, and I couldn't bring myself to eat it. The pork chop was bland and overly fatty, the fish sauce was nothing special, and the bánh mì was extremely disappointing as well. This wasn't an isolated issue either. On another visit, I found a hair in my food. And on some evenings, a staff member would clean the floors with such a strong bleach-smelling cleaner while customers were still eating that the chemical smell completely took over the dining area. Trying to enjoy a meal while your nose is full of cleanser is not exactly appetizing. I don't write a bad review because of one mediocre dish. I give places multiple tries because I want to be fair. But when the unpleasant experiences keep repeating, eventually it stops feeling like bad luck and starts looking like a quality-control problem. The sour-smelling, mushy bì today was the final straw. So I thought placing an order online would be faster but nope had to wait quite a bit for pickup and using their Com Tan Thanh website ended up being a few dollars more per plate. We ordered 3 rice plates and the total before tip was $77.85. Ok inflation we get it. We get home and even my mom is shocked rice is still a nice big amount but the meat portion is TINY compared to other viet spots. Even the side salad is a sad piece of lettuce. Totally forgot to take a picture of our food because we were so disappointed but my mom said don't order from them again there's so many other choices. Located in central Fremont within a seldomly packed lot, this restaurant commands a corner spot that dwarfs just about any other Vietnamese restaurant you've ever been in. Sharing space with a gym and cafe, it's a fine place to visit to grab a bite. After you've parked in any of the vacant spots, head on in and feast your eyes on the humungous dining space. For this particular visit, all patrons were relegated to their main dining space immediately accessible from the entrance and kitchen. The other side of the restaurant seems to be reserved for busier times or parties (it's a great space with decent lighting and high ceilings). With menus set out at the host's table, I would assume many customers come in for takeout orders. We decided to dine in this time but ended up ordering more food to take home (keep in mind the broken rice dishes don't come with soup for takeout orders). After being seated, the staff were quick to offer menus and serve waters. While waiting for the rest of the party to arrive, I ordered an iced Vietnamese coffee and it was delicious. We also set out utensils found at the table for each party member. The menu includes an abundance of items with some having different protein options. Among their appetizers, in addition to the commonly found spring rolls and egg rolls, they also had a crispy pancake. It came out fresh, crunchy and filled with bean sprouts, carrots and shrimp. It was served with lettuce to be used as a wrap and intended to be dunked in bite size chunks into the fish sauce before chomping down. Very hearty dish and good for sharing. The entree options included noodles and rice. With broken rice in its name, I had to give it a try and I was extremely satisfied with the outcome. I ended up getting the number 25 which includes broken rice, shredded pork, steamed pork cake, shrimp cake, and your choice among grilled pork/pork chop/beef/chicken). I settled on the pork chop and it was a decent sized bone-in chop that was lightly seasoned and grilled perfectly. The soup that came with the dish was a perfect palate cleanser. When finished, you may ask for boxes to pack your leftovers home. You'll pay at the tablet near the kitchen/bar area. I paid via credit card so it was self service; I'm not sure how cash payments are processed. Overall, Com Tam Thanh has all the Vietnamese cuisine favorites you're craving for including pho, sandwiches, vermicelli, and broken rice but by far, broken rice seems to be the go to for most patrons. I'd like to come back to explore the rest of their menu since first impressions were great! This place can certainly accommodate nearly any sized party due to its immense dining space, however the kitchen is small and likely staffed just enough to get food moving. This is a fancy Vietnamese restaurant that used to have steak and grilled squab and some fancy dishes . Now is under new management and the menu is basic Vietnamese noodle soup . We came here for lunch because we had a big party of 20 plus people . It had lots of tables to fit us in . It also had the deal to buy three items and got the fourth one free . Inside decorations were nice and even had a stage to get on to make presentation . The dinner tables are good for wedding or reception for company events . However , the taste of the pho is fine but the choice are very limited . The dishes are " modified " to more basic than the traditional Pho restaurants. They don't have tendon or tripe or some beef rib bones and crabs paste ( for bun Rieu) . I am disappointed in that . Service was great and the restroom was clean . I simply asked them to put the meat from my pho on the side instead of in the soup. I did not ask for extra meat or any additional ingredients. It was the exact same meat that already came with my bowl. To my surprise, they charged me an extra $2 just because the meat was served on the side. I don't understand how changing the way the food is presented justifies an extra charge. If this is the restaurant's policy, customers should be informed before ordering, not surprised when they receive the bill. We usually go to Vung Tau for our Vietnamese cravings down the street but they are out of business so we'll give Com Tam Thanh restaurant a try. We arrived around 1 pm and we were seated right away. Majority of the tables were empty and the staff were eating @ a near by table too. We ordered the vermicelli bowls with grilled pork and chicken. I really like the other com tam (broken rice) restaurants in San Jose but because I wanted to go to a shaved ice place in Newark later I figured it would be easier to come here instead and I still think it was a mistake. The place is huge and that the venue was probably the Mehran that I used to go often which was a Pakistan restaurant so you can host a banquet there. The service is fine and good enough. My problem mainly has to do with the food especially the namesake com tam which is not only limited in choice. I'd consider this more of a pho place that happens to have com tam on the menu. The com tam itself is also not very good. Even the rice and the fish sauce are not good because the sauce feels more like dipping sauce for egg rolls than actual fish sauce. The egg cake and the shrimp cake are small and unsavory. The texture feels off as well. They do allow replacing the pork skin with an fried egg which is nice. The pho are also so so at best. The kids menu exists but not on the menu so you have to ask. The seafood pho states it has squid and shrimps but it's mostly fish and fake lobster balls. Tonight, I'm in the South Bay Area. And I've seen this, a lot of times. I'm finally here at Cơm Tấm Thành Restaurant. I think out of the whole South Bay Area/East Bay, Newark is like my favorite place to be. This is only 4.1 miles away from the Tesla Factory. I didn't expect it to look as nice as this in here, I see they happen to have the Stage up, and this is another great event space to throw a Party or Banquet at. It's another late night. And It's a good day, for the usual Cơm Tấm Sườn Bò Đại Hàn or Korean BBQ Beef Platter. I like how they really seasoned the Beef, and it was nice and juicy. We ordered a chicken salad, combination pho, grilled chicken, and two thai teas. Com Tam Thanh has been a favourite of mine since a kid. Yesterday I visited and I hate to say that unfortunately this place has entered its downfall. I remember they had a vast amount of options in the menu especially for pho, but now they have one pamphlet that's double printed, therefore the menu is extremely small for how spacious this restaurant is. No option for tendon, no flank, no tripe, and I believe the only meat they had was rare steak and brisket (maybe meatballs if I can remember?) and if you wanted extra meat, it's an up charge of $6. I got regular Pho soup with brisket. The food quality itself was okay. I've honestly had better pho but the portion is pretty big for the price. However, the rice plate disappointed me. $20 for a rice plate that's PACKED with rice and barely any meat (I ordered chicken) which also came with a spring roll and drink. For the small portion you receive, this combo should be $18 MAX. It came with sauces and soup too which were great compliments to the meal but I was still disappointed for the total of our meal ($40) for two items and small portioning from the rice plate. The service was great, they certainly were fast with taking our orders and receiving our food but unfortunately it's not enough to increase my score. It might rank as my favorite banh mi sandwich. I never eat grilled pork, but I tried it for this sandwich and it was so good. This Vietnamese restaurant is quite big, but half of this place is open. I've been wondering what's covered on the right portion of this restaurant. Perhaps a private event that's going to be hosted? There wasn't many people when I came in probably because it's past lunch. Not sure though, but the food is good here. I like how they served my Grilled Chicken plate along with the mini Pho. Post covid: the menu shrunk down to 2 pages, front and back, with limited items. Price also had gone up significantly. I would never guess that a rice plate would cost up to $20+ each. But the quality of the rice plate remains the same, portion wise. This place allows you to substitute an item with an egg for no charge. This is a great pho restaurant! I've been to its sister location back in Milpitas a few times (finally closed) and I thought the rice plates were better than their soup dishes. We ordered their egg rolls, wonton noodle soup and regular beef pho. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonton soup with its seafood broth. I thought the wonton was just ok; it tasted like shrimp balls instead and not that typical Chinese wonton taste. I also thought their eggrolls were just ok too. These were slightly bland with the meat not thoroughly cooked. I've had better elsewhere but maybe it tastes better to someone else?! The pho is delicious and so clean tasting. The broth is hardy, lots of noodles, and a nice amount of beef. We're huge fans of their housemade chili oil. It has a nice garlic taste and this subtle sweetness which matches perfectly with everything. They might have the best chili oil yet, as far as all the pho places I've been to not including TK Noodle lol.
