'Hope Outdoors' has been a familiar browse & shop stop for us during several stays in Hope. During…read morethe most recent mid-June stay, our stop found the same friendly and helpful staff, back into the recently, totally-renovated, original downtown location of its store. 'Shiny-new' and bright quarters, with nicely-stocked, and well displayed offerings of just about "anything & everything" one could wish to see when thinking of outdoor 'wants & requirements' - including clothes, gear, and accessories re: camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, emergency/survival supplies, and so much more! On this stop, I was seeking a jacket -- a 'shell-type', heavy enough for fall wear, but roomy enough to accommodate a heavy sweater, vest, or such for winter wear. I really liked the styles and qualities of what they had to offer, but try as I did, just could not catch a size to properly fit me. Will catch another look or two before fall sets in, and check on what might be available. Plus, my eyes caught some 'sandals' during this stop, and they definitely need a closer, second look, and try-on. Total shopping interests at a shop like 'Hope Outdoors' are on the rather narrow side for me now. But I really like to browse this wonderful shop in Hope, even if it is just to soak in the 'feel' I get, and 'memories' it provides of many past, and wider outdoor interests, and experiences. Thanks to the staff - for their cordial, and helpful service!

My camp bootie broke and Daniel found me the right clip for some string to mend it. The prices are even cheaper than some big brand stores. I'm so happy I found this store. I will always stop in now on my travels.

Northwest Traps - Ready to relieve the ocean of its sweet sweet bounty

Erick, the proprietor of Northwest Traps, has a pretty interesting story. After blasting out of…read moreBellingham on an Alaskan fishing boat at an early age and spending subsequent years crabbing and fishing, he got to wondering if there was a better way to build a stackable crab pot. If only he knew how to weld, right? So as soon as he gets back to shore, he teaches his own ass how to weld -- all so he can make this pot idea a reality. After testing and refining the pot with his fellow fishing community, he's now known for producing the best pots in the region -- so much sturdier and more durable than the competition, with super exacting welds and webbing. They are meant to last for years and years, and they do. He's now busy building larger commercial traps for many of the local tribes, along with outfitting the biggest fisheries in Canada and Alaska. Could you buy a crappy Big 5 pot for 90 bucks? Yes, yes you could. And it will bend out of shape and rust all to shit in minutes and you'll be just one more person throwing garbage into the sea (and probably pulling back WAY less crab when it's all said and done). People seem to feel his pots radically out-trap the others, which is why he has a faithful following. He hooked me up with a sweet monster pot for my paddleboard, and I couldn't believe the quality. I also went on a crab charter and watched his pots pulled up, one after the other, out of Bellingham Bay with WAY over the legal limit of Dungeness in each one. So yes, this is the place you want.

Don't take your children there!!!…read more While looking at fishing poles and reels to buy myself for veterans day, my two daughter's were walking around excited to look at the new store I'd never taken them to before. They had walked upstairs thinking it was apart of the stores selection, upon seeing it was full of boxes they walked down and came back to look at the knives near the reels I was looking at. A man that worked at the store ended up approaching them soon after, asking them if they had gone upstairs. They answered yes and explained they hadn't seen the signage stating employees only until they came back down as it was poorly placed against the wall near the stairs and barely visable. He then insinuated they stole and made a show of saying he would check the cameras. Once I stepped in and said my children aren't thieves he then double down and said that they had cameras. I left infuriated leaving behind a 200 dollar purchase with a bad taste in my mouth, safe to say I will not be going back.

I am just starting my fishing journey and was going to have one of my experienced friends join me on a little shopping spree. We are still going to do that shopping trip but I wanted to get a head start. My goal was to go in and buy a tackle box. Each person I saw smiled and waved. One of the sales associates noticed my perplexed look on my face when looking for tackle boxes and asked me if he could help. I explained I am new to fishing and I am starting with trout fishing. This gentleman immediately gave some tips on tackle boxes and walked me through some gear ideas. He had me hold a rod and was showing me how strong it was if I had a fish on there. He was really patient with my questions and when another customer saw him, that customer was like "you sold me my first fishing license years ago" (I think he says 20 years ago to be exact). This associate name is Glen and let me tell you, find Glen because he will take care of you. I ended up purchasing a tackle box, a rod and reel. When I went to check out, the cashier was friendly and reminded me to take my receipt in case I needed to return something (thanks for looking out for me). Finally, when I went to get my fishing license, the associate lady (her name escapes me at the moment) was super friendly and after we talked about my journey into trout fishing, she showed me some good stuff that she uses and I bought that too. I would say, the employees that I encountered loved what they do and gave exceptional advice. Whether you're new to fishing or experienced, this is the place to go. I can't wait to come back as a I continue to grow my supplies. Thanks for the great experience!!
