Yesterday we went to the Madison County Service Center to the Tax Assessor's Office. We received…read moreour property tax bills and both of us were surprised at the high bills. I called and was transferred and then the phone hung up on me. I tried to call a second time and the same thing happened. That's why I went to the Service Center. We both went thru the metal detector and my knees triggered the alarm. The deputy looked at me and I volunteered to show both knees. He told me that wasn't necessary. The alarm is triggered quite regularly by individuals who have had replacements he said. We signed in and received a ticket to wait for the tax assessor's office to call our number. 30 seconds later our number was called and we went to the second floor. A very nice young lady looked at our tax bills and told us the homestead exception was removed. She was able to reinstate the exemption and print out the new tax bill. All we had to do was head downstairs and sign in again to visit the tax collector's office. We signed in and 15 seconds later our number was called. We went inside and I paid the tax bills. This visit to the Service Center was smooth and quick. I am glad I wasn't trying to register a car or renew my car tag. If there were 100 people waiting, only 5 of us were there for services other than waiting for the license department. It occurred me it's the last Friday in September and the month will end on Wednesday so people were trying to get their car tags renewed by the 30th. For me my experience was great. 5/5

I say "still"because a couple months ago when I was here that exact same sink was doing the exact same thing. Then, they had framed artwork available for checkout and Mom kept those in full rotation at home - pretty cool! I participated in Daughters of the Revolution flag speech competitions in elementary school which were held at the library. It was always a thrill when the bookmobile would park up the street at John's Big Brothers! Yes, I was a serious book nerd, especially as a child. My family purchased numerous memorial materials for departed friends and loved ones and have donated items to HPL consistently over the years. Dewey Decimal System anyone? :) I can't find the date this library was built; however, it's been a while. Before moving out of Madison county, I used the library a lot. I loved the online renewal process and enjoyed their CDs, DVDs, books (of course) and many purchases from the Friends of the Library bookstore (the volunteers there are sooooooo sweet and helpful!). Glancing at their policies, who knew they had a darkroom available for use in 4 hour increments? I've also enjoyed several of the smallish art displays they had inside (not the window displays, which are nice) but a true small artist's exhibit The staff have always been helpful, and their computers do the trick now that the card catalogs are long gone. I live in an adjacent county now and I work in HSV (and own property in Huntsville), and here's the rub: when I last checked because I do not reside in Huntsville proper an HPL card was $50.00/year. S e r i o u s l y. I think that is steep and ridiculous, especially when I own property in HSV! I also have to ding them on the tiny parking spaces and the sketchiness of those who hang out in the parking lot. If you can get past those dings, you will find a vast array of books, sources for geneological research (this section is the Heritage Collection, I believe it is located on the 3rd floor - hard left as you exit the stairs) and an obituary index, local history, additional digital resources such as Rosetta Stone to learn languages, a great selection of current magazines to peruse and CDs galore ranging from Taylor Swift to the Boston Symphony. They have a microfilm/microfiche section that "includes an almost complete run of The Huntsville Times from 1928 - 2015, along with many early Huntsville papers, including The Huntsville Democrat, Southern Advocate, and the Mercury papers." I recall they had decades of Huntsville phone books (a throw back to back when that was a thing) and (I could be wrong about this) church membership directories. Their children's section is fairly expansive too and often had children's artwork on display. Oh, and they do have an after hours drop box. They have ~ 11 branches in Madison county and do a great job of sharing materials, if another branch has what you are searching for, within a few days they will have that item at a branch convenient to your home or work. Reading their COVID policies, it sounds like they are doing a great job with that! Do "check out" the library - "create |explore | connect!"

I commuted to Calhoun in Decatur from Huntsville and rather than drive back to Huntsville between classes, I would hang out in this library! Although not as large as the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, Decatur Public Library had everything I needed to pass the time: magazines, a place to catch up on homework and study, books to flip through, and creature comforts (heating in winter months, A/C in hot months, and restrooms). Based on other reviews here, it appears this library now offers all the "modern" amenities that people look for in a public library these days: Wi-Fi, computing and printing, an online catalog accessible from your home, ebooks, interlibrary loans, meeting spaces, and a Friends of the Library used bookstore. The staff here were always friendly and it made a lovely place to relax or study while attending Calhoun!

I couldn't quite figure out what to place this under so I chose Landmarks & Historical buildings…read morebecause it is housed in the old Tenn.Valley Bank, built in 1927 and has a little museum upstairs on the 3rd floor. But this is the Morgan County Archives which houses huge tomes of records, genealogical papers and a most interesting display (with original documents/photos) of the Scottsboro trial. I initially went in to ask about the Garth cemetery which lies untended in the thickets behind Rose Lawn Cemetery and had a fascinating conversation with John Allison, their archivist who gave me a more detailed study of the families buried there. One of the more interesting things displayed on the first floor was original documents, court papers and photos of the Scottsboro trial where eight young African American men were put on trial for raping two white women (One later recanted her story). I have seen a documentary on this farce of a trial and it was intriguing reading excerpts from the actual trial. Upstairs on the third floor is a conference room/museum that Mr. Allison is working on. It has a confederate soldiers complete uniform, WWII uniforms and military items donated, household utensils, several weaving looms, old cameras and office machines. This is definitely a hidden gem in the Old Decatur section and worth stopping by. They normally open around 8 a.m. but are closed on holidays.

I spent a lot of time at Marshall Space Flight Center. I've seen one of the "world's flattest floors" at NASA MSFC. Here, Senior Engineer at Marshall's Flat Floor Facility, Tom Bryan said, "I can move 4,000 pounds with just my pinky, and I'm no weightlifter." This floor is used for training, experimenting and testing. I've enjoyed the MSFC exercise facilities which are always well maintained and staffed with knowledgeable helpful people! The main gym I frequented included free weights, a sauna, a hot tub, racquetball courts, ping-pong, badminton, volleyball and held instructor-led classes such as bench aerobics and even had massages! I played on the coed NASA MSFC tennis league (at that time it was called MARS, and likely it still is), and used their four tennis courts for local league play and tournaments. The courts are lighted, have stadium seats for viewers, have a nice restroom/changing facility, and a tennis ball machine! I'm grateful NASA MSFC offers so many amenities for it's employees and their families!
