Went to Colossus's first night of dinner service. Everything was very solid... I have a ton of caveats, but I have faith it will only get better from here. You can tell the staff were a little nervous, which was to be expected. For example, we sat right by the kitchen and they came from behind us and awkwardly placed our food on the table instead of going to the front of the table like usual. This felt pretty janky and normally I wouldn't note something like this, but it felt unpolished. The wine list is decently expansive and had a wide range of prices, which is great! I got an orange wine (Russian River Valley) which was $11 for the glass; way better than a $20 cocktail. You MUST order the lamb belly souvlaki, that was the best bite of the night. It was extremely tender, yet the skin was lightly crisp. I've never had lamb belly before and now I wonder why I never see it on menus. One of the co-owners, Nicholas, came out and told us that his wife and co-owner, Kristin, is part-Greek, so she brought that inspo to the menu...I'm glad! I honestly think lamb belly would be an amazing main course...wow, wow wow. Next, I am adding this to the review because my friend went the day after: they said the pizza is REALLY good. I can attest to this because just about every table had it. The pizza has no flop, there's a nice char on the crust, and it has the perfect amount of "grease" you want in a pizza. The plus is that the cheese pizza is $22 which is way cheaper than the steak frites or roast chicken mains. Now I'm kind of regretting not getting it, but I'll come back and taste the rest of the menu. (I will update the review when I try the pizza). We also got the "bread service" with rosemary focaccia bread. It came with a side of olive oil and a very high quality butter. It was okay... kind of disappointing for a place that specializes in bread; it had a fluffy interior but a little too hard than I like on the exterior. Not enough rosemary flavor either. We had the Panzanella salad that was perfectly balanced between the tomatoes and stracciatella cheese, but the country bread "croutons" were a weird texture hybrid of too chewy and hard. The charred eggplant with beans dish was hearty and solid - it felt like a proper winter-y dish, but I wouldn't order it again though. The Caesar roast chicken could use some work, especially for $34. It was served on polenta with charred greens and didn't come through enough in flavor or texture. The chicken should have had a nice pan sauce, as the breast was a little dry. I saw other tables get the steak frites, which made me want to order a side of fries. They were visually very good but was about as good as diner fries. This is a huge miss. I'm hoping this gets a massive upgrade. It had no crunch and tasted slightly raw. Also, no side of any sauce whatsoever, either - should at least come with an aioli. I think your mileage will vary based on what you order. This is what I think would get a better review: get a pizza or two, mushroom polenta, and the spicy feta dip... I need to try the dessert next time as well. Although my review above sounds very rough around the edges, there's a lot of opportunity for polish. I still give it a 4! Total came to $126 including tip, which is pretty good for a date night with a TON of food. I would order less than I did, it's too much for two!
Great coffee, yummy pastries & cookies!!8 got the Midsommar Latte & a regular vanilla latte hot. I got the huge salted chocolate chip cookie which was to die for. I didn't get it warmed because it already looked soft and I didn't want it to be all over me if I got it warmed (too messy). I just love the flavor of the Midsommar latte it's like earthy, it has espresso, house-made anise caramel, cold foam, fennel, and bee pollen. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ps. They are making their inside space bigger so now people can hang out inside and be cozy like a nice little coffee shop with comfy seats and environment overall[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]].
There are a lot of great coffee houses in LB, and I would say this one is in the top 5! The line was out the door, on a Monday at 10:00 and now I see why. I love a lavender latte and their honey-lavender one was made to perfection; I also love that they have soy milk! Also, their butter croissants are ginormous and so fresh; perfectly crispy on the outside! They make fresh breads and pastries too. Prices were fair and about average. Def my new favorite!! :D
Colossus new dinner menu did not disappoint. We ordered the meatballs, steak Frites, and half Caesar roasted Mary's chicken. Everything was also yummy. The staff was very attentive and sweet! We will be back! Highly recommend checking it out
Colossus used to be one of our favorite places in Long Beach for fresh bread and interesting sandwiches. Our favorite sandwich is their Turkey and Brie with fig mostarda. The Turkey and Brie sandwich has changed over the course of time as it has a less prominence of brie and fig flavors; however, this sandwich costs $16. Their star of the sandwiches are their fresh breads. Cost of lattes range from $8 to $8.50. They have some good pastries here; however, they're also priced on the higher end. I don't come as often as we did before because parking is pretty inconvenient on 2nd street and their are also prices are on the higher end. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They're expanding their space to have more seating, which will be nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]At this time, you mainly have to take what you buy to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Pretty disappointed. Based on the quality of their bread I expected more from the restaurant side. It started with the 15 minute wait while we stared at half dozen empty tables all clean and ready to go. When we finally got seated it was at one of those empty tables. I Had the drip coffee which the server proudly stated was from a local partner coffee roaster. It was sour. She brought a fresh brewed cup. Still sour. So I stuck with the room temperature water. (Yep, room temp). I was semi thrilled to see their French omelette on the menu so I ordered it. Their chef needs to take a food trip to France (or maybe Ubuntu) because this was not a a French omelette. The most basic premise of a French omelette is slow cooking over low heat so the eggs don't color and stay soft and creamy. These eggs had plenty of color, had a crisp (not soft) texture and had the taste of overheating. I could have just gone to a regular breakfast joint if I wanted an overcooked omelette, and it least it would have been meal sized. The salad was nothing special. The toast was very good. My husband had the Caesar chicken sandwich. There was nothing stand out about this sandwich. After breakfast we ordered the special dessert. It was on the specials menu (which consisted of two items). Oddly, despite their specifically bringing the specials menu to our table (we didn't ask for it) the specials were only for the evening. Umm, ok, why did you bring me the menu? So we ordered the kouign amann. It was oddly served upside down so the stumpy bottom was facing up and the crispy top of the muffin was down on the plate. Complete lack of attention to detail. How did they think an upside down, 7 dollar pastry slapped on a plate would be perceived by the customer? As I write this I'm still hungry and drinking the coffee i made at home. I'm not going back.
Unfortunately this will be an incomplete review of sorts because we arrived at around 10am and the pastries that I wanted to specifically try out which was the cardamom and the almond croissant were all sold out. Major sad face. Now, I know that bakeries can only keep stock what they can and I really don't know if it's right to blame or be upset, but it was still relatively early, and we just simply struck out. I did pick up a few selections that they did have, but it truly was slim pickings even though what we did snag was pretty ok--sorry, I think my mood was not the best and I can't remember what they were. It doesn't help that I recently went to a popular bakery in Pasadena with a line and another bakery in Long Beach, and both experiences were more positive and successful than this one was. We stopped by Colossus Bakery for coffee this morning. It's so fun to come in here and see all the delicious baked goods! Additionally, they have a mini deli with all kinds of interesting ingredients and condiments, even Rancho Gordo Beans from central California!! The coffee was great and with had lovely conversations with other customers. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a great place to start the day[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Honestly, Colossus is a solid cafe and I bet they'll be booming once they finishing expanding. Still, I'm more a fan of their food than coffee. I got a honey lavender latte, as I've only tried their drip in the past. The honey lavender notes were definitely there, but the latte is much more on the milky side than coffee side, which is what I didn't like. However, their sandwich was soo good. The turkey and brie has a nice fluffy bread, a healthy portion of turkey, a mix of herbs, and this super sweet and fragrant fig mostarda, which is like a fig mustard spread. Definitely would come back for the sandwich, maybe not the coffee though.
I asked around--with so many coffee shops on 2nd Street, one has to stand out above the rest. EVERYONE I asked had the same response--COLOSSUS! And their recommendation let us here today. Folks, trust the baristas, if they recommend a coffee, go with their recommendation. Rose Cardamon Latte. I don't think that is even a combination that even makes sense, yet it was a flavorful explosion I am glad I experienced. It's not too sweet, it's extremely creamy and the exotic combination does not overpower the essence of the coffee. I see why so many say Colossus is the best; simply put, THEY ARE!
I stopped in for a quick snack, but I honestly can't even remember what I got. If you can recognize this latte let me know. I remember it being a little too sweet, but I think that's in the design of the drink by looking at it. I remember also getting a pastry like a ham and cheese croissant and liking it, so I would definitely come back.

I loved my pastry -- a type of croissant with vanilla bean inside. It was the perfect amount of bread with sweetness. The vegan cookie was also a hit -- super duper chocolatey like a brownie [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibes are vibing. It's like a teeny tiny market inside with coffee and baked goods at the end.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You can buy wine, clothing attire, and other cool food things.
Cinnamon Sugar Knot, Midsommar Latte ICED ONLY This was my first time trying out colossus after always passing by it on my walks along 2nd street. I ordered a Cinnamon Sugar Knot and a after looking at the coffee options I decided to go with the Midsommar Latte. The Cinnamon Sugar Knot was pretty yummy, it had, in my opinion, a very good distribution of sugar all along the pastry and wasn't lackluster like I feel most places are. If you are craving a sweet bite of something I recommend the Cinnamon Sugar Knot for sure. The Midsommar Latte on the other hand had a pretty presentation and at first glance looked like it would be pretty good. Sadly to me the flavor wasn't there, it tasted very milky and lacked any other flavoring. It's suppose to be a spicy Carmel as described to me by the barista but as I stated I was just milky. If you crave more of a stronger coffee taste, as I tend to personally like, i definitely would stay away from the Midsommer Latte. The service was quick and the baristas were nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There wasn't any music playing though when I went, maybe it was paused in accident, so it was extremely quite which isn't a bad thing but perhaps playing some lo-fi music to just set a nice relaxing tone would be great[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All in all, not a bad little cafe, nice interior, yummy pastries, and good amount of options to choose from within the drink menu[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

7/12/23 We were merely looking for a nice cool place to grab some java & maybe a pastry while working remotely ...ended up here We've passed by this place a few times & never really gave it much thought. Glad we decided to just give it a try. It was effin' hot out, even for LB so close to the water-so I'm gonna try their honey lavender latte w/ oat milk ICED, and the Kouign amann while I'm at it. Hubby, of course, ordered the usual hot oat milk latte, he gives it a 4 star . I loved my beverage, it was delicious, aromatic & refreshing. The croissant was flaky, a little sticky but so good, delectable indeed. Hubby was eyeing the other customers' sandwiches and was tempted to order the BLT...but realized they're about to close already. Would highly recommend it and the kid at the counter said they have pizzas on Fridays. I wanna try other stuff too. It's a cute little coffee shop fishing out baked goods & sandwiches, wine, plus caffeinated beverages. Seats about 6 people inside, about the same amount outdoors. read more

One of my favorite neighborhood coffee shops! Some of the best bread, pastries and coffee in LB. Plus, you can pick up natural wine, tinned fish, hot sauce and other fun trinkets while you wait in line. My go to is the iced honey lavender latte. You can't go wrong with any of their baked goods, prepped or fresh food items - some of my favorites are the pecan sticky bun, jambon beurre sandwich and OG cookie. The city unfairly took away their seating, but that shouldn't stop you from grabbing food and drinks to go. Plenty of spots nearby to enjoy your meal to go outdoors! read more
I was just walking through the area and decided to try Colossus coffee. It's a cute shop that also sells bread. I got the coconut caramel latte and it was great. Coffee flavor was full, bold, nutty and little to no bitterness. I sipped on this drink throughout the day and it was still flavorful even though the ice melted. My sister ordered the Breakwater drink and it looked amazing and was topped with real vanilla bean whipped cream! I'm definitely getting that next time. read more

I loved the ambiance of this place and they make a lovely iced vanilla latte. There is something so wonderful about their ICE CUBES! I love that you can grab a pastry for here and a bottle of orange wine for later. Lovely staff and great selections of food & drink. Fair amount of seating for pairs/couples. read more

I enjoyed this place. It is a bit small and not a lot of sitting room. But definitely worth it. The lattes were good. The avocado toast was amazing. The bread soft and the avocado was creamy with good flavor. I also had their egg sandwich. That was tasty. I added bacon to it. Service was great. Friendly and helpful. We didn't have to wait for long. I did take a sourdough loaf home and it didn't last because it was so good. I want to comeback for the pizza read more

Place used to tout they don't ask (prompt) for tips. That ended. Next time just do it from the start. Don't put this message on your customers after changing your mind AND charging $8 for a croissant. Fail. read more

First of all I used to serve Colossus pastries and Penny's coffee at another job and loved it. Their shop is even better. Everything I've had here has far surpassed my expectations! The only thing I would mention is their entrance/indoor seating are is quite small, but they do have a little patio area outside. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone! read more
i haven't been to colossus in a bit.. I have to be honest that i've had some lackluster experiences here in the recent year. with both service and the food/baked goods. they were so good when they had just opened but a lot of things have changed since then. i have supported them since their farmers market only days. i'm not sure if they have done away with plates when you dine in but our food arrived in to-go containers. they've also made mistakes (numerous times) before - to give me the take out containers and utensils when dining in so it could be just that. i got the egg casserole on a bread with mushroom and gruyère. not sure what i expected but i thought it would be a bigger portion since it was 14 dollars. the dish was a bit of a one-note hitter. greasy, salty - alright for one or two bites but it gets to be kind of monotonous after that. i bought a side of hot sauce for a dollar and that remedied it a little bit. at 14, maybe throw in a little side salad. the casserole is probably made with stale bread, which is fine - but it just was not at all an interesting dish. i don't plan to get this again. i'm also hungry after eating the whole thing. read more

Came here for pizza last Friday, upon returning for my order they said that there was a error in the system and the ticket wasn't sent to the kitchen. Had to wait for the pizza another 30min. Upon receiving pizza they said they were going to refund the order because the pizza wasn't up to par. The pizza did not look the best and it wasn't cut at all. Wednesday the following week, I see two more charges for the same amount pop up from my bank at 4:37pm. I drive to the location to see what's going on. They're closed. They close at 2pm on Wednesday. They're people inside, I knock, no answer. Continue to knock, no answer. How am I being charged for something when you are closed? How am I being charged for something when im not present? Never got a refund, but received more unauthorized charges on my card from this establishment. Don't trust this place. read more

This is one of my favorite bakeries in Long Beach to get pastries. Parking in the morning isn't bad since the parking meters are free until 10am. Inside it was pretty small and they had goodies on display you can buy. I usually order the Pan Au Chocolat, it's basically a chocolate croissant. It was really good, buttery and flaky, tasted like the ones you would get in Paris! Overall, I recommend checking this bakery out if you're in the area for Parisian pastries. read more

I ordered the Spicy! Calabrian Honey & Sausage Pizza and added fennel sausage. That pizza was out of this world. There was an issue with the delivery of my pizza. I called the shop, and Valeria was kind, helpful, and patient with me. She had the pizza I ordered redone, adjusted the bill, and had my pizza made fresh to replace the first one. I really appreciate the service, and again, the pizza is delicious! read more

I ordered the espresso based drink, "The Breakwater," and it did not disappoint. The sparkling water and chantilly cream were the perfect complement to each other, making the espresso taste very smooth. Whenever I see a sparkling water/espresso drink, I'm intrigued--as not many coffee shops have this type of drink, but it seems to be catching on. The only negative part of my review is that I wish the drink was more affordable: at $8 a pop, it just isn't within my budget to come here often, although I wish it was. With that being said, I am aware that the prices reflect an increase in the wages of their employees, which I do think is a necessitous. read more
Totally understand what the hype is about! Everything we ordered was fantastic and tasted like it was made with love. We both ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant breakfast sandwiches. I also ordered the O.G. chocolate chip cookie and Kouign Amann. The sandwiches were amazing. The croissant was fresh, the bacon was thick (bonus points), and it was seasoned well. Definitely recommend the sweet potato hot sauce! The O.G. chocolate chip cookie was a wonderful and great texture. It had a chewy feel and was the right type of dense. It was my first time trying the Kouigb Amann and it tasted super fresh like it just came out of the oven. read more
Tried the cardamom bun (just the right amount of sweetness and a lovely smooth cardamom flavor) and BLT based on recommendations. Both were very good. Staff were friendly. I love that staff are paid a living wage & provided health care and that there's no tipping. Happy to support businesses that take care of their employees. read more

7/7/2022 4 1/2 Stars HAM & CHEESE CROISSANT This was good. Heated up in the toaster oven. Gruyere cheese and ham in a buttery croissant. The seeds on top were good, but not necessary. Did not really add anything special to it except create nice photos. Unfortunately, the seeds on mine all fell apart before I got to take a decent photo. Personally, there are other croissant items that are better than this. I prefer the breakfast croissant sandwich over this. KOUIGN AMANN **Recommend This was delicious! Understood why it was a popular item! Heated it up until slightly hot to the touch in the toaster oven. The kouign amann was buttery and as you bite into it you get that vanilla bean, sugary moistness from the croissant. The caramelized croissant on the bottom is crispy. Overall a lovely pastry to have with a cup of tea or coffee. TOAST & BUTTER This was delicious, however the toast was cut much thicker than expected. It was alotta bread to bite into. I appreciate how well the bread is made, but I think the thickly cut griddled bread works well for the other breakfast items such as Whipped Ricotta & Jam Toast and the Done Up Egg In A Basket. DONE UP EGG IN A BASKET **Favorite & Must-Try! Super good! Loved it from first bite! The thick toasted country bread with the scallion cream cheese, chives, bagel seeds and egg in the middle was lovely! It tasted like an Everything Bagel with cream cheese. The chives was a bonus. The egg in the middle was chef's kiss. A complete breakfast for me. PECAN STICKY BUN This was delicious straight out of the toaster oven! Gooey, brown-sugary, buttery, and nutty. CAPRESE BAGUETTE SANDWICH The pesto with the heirloom tomatoes and Fior Di Latte cheese was delicious! The ingredients were fresh and it would be perfect for an al fresco lunch. The only downside is the mini baguette. It was not fresh and was a day old. It was so hard to chew! I cut the baguette in half to eat more comfortably, yet the baguette was so difficult to bite into! I felt like my teeth was fighting with the sandwich. So unfortunate the baguette was not made fresh! SAUCISSON SEC BAGUETTE I was looking forward to this baguette sandwich. Again, like the Caprese Baguette Sandwich, the baguette was really hard to eat. The French-cured sausage was thinly sliced over La Tur Cheese, a creamy, soft cheese which is a mix of cow, sheep and goat's milk. Mainly tasted like goat cheese. Anyone who loves strong, pungent goat cheese, this is for you. read more
I do see the hype for the pizza here. It's one of the best I've had. The quiche is extraordinary as well. A favorite for the family. A small shop but packs a lot. Had the pumpkin slice loaf as well. Spent $5+ and a good size. Hubby and I shared. They have front street tables. No spot inside. They have a variety of merch you can choose from. This time of the year is great for holiday shopping. Good cost but of quality. People friendly, staff a bit in the busy side but they do their best. read more
We're regulars at the San Pedro bakery but this was my first time at their LB spot. The larger space means a full kitchen with an expanded menu and brunch here was fantastic. If you do end up coming at a busy time the wait will be a bit long so be warned. Otherwise, the food is excellent and the bread is fantastic as always! read more

We swung by this place on a Saturday afternoon after visiting Rosie's dog beach with a friend. We were lucky with parking grabbing a street spot a short walk away. The place was busy for sure but we were able to get through the line and get our food pretty quickly considering the continuous flow of people. We first grabbed a table outside that didn't really fit all three of us and my husband brought out a snack to share while we waited for the rest of our food - We got a piece of bread with salami, goat cheese and strawberry reduction which was a perfect little snack. Thankfully we were able to get a larger table inside right after getting our food. Thoughts on the food were overall fabulous. My healthy friend got the cauliflower sandwich which she said was good with unique flavors and perfectly balanced. It came with a side salad which was also good but she is not a radish fan so she picked those out. I got the Turkey & Bre sandwich which was very tasty I only ate half and like the uncoordinated person I am I dropped the 2nd half on the ground when we were leaving. I was very disappointed because it was so yummy. My husband got the polenta porridge with a fried egg. He said it was also very good. It looked small compared to our sandwichs but after eating it all he felt good with the size It was very creamy and he did wish there were more veggies which were very tasty. read more

Colossus is truly a hidden gem in Long Beach. Located on 2nd street, this bakery / cafe whips up fresh bread, scrumptious pastries, and yummy drinks! They mostly have outdoor seating, so it's perfect to enjoy a nice day out sipping your coffee. Once you enter the cafe, you're met with the amazing aromas of freshly made bread. My boyfriend and I decided to try their breakfast sandwich, jambon sandwich, iced matcha, and chai latte. Everything was soooo delicious. The breakfast sandwich came on a croissant, and it was buttery, flaky, goodness. You can literally taste the high quality ingredients in the jambon sandwich. The bread, meat, and cheese were all top-notch. We also loved both our matcha and chai drinks. Colossus is such a great addition to 2nd street and we can't wait to try more! read more

I came here the other day wanting to try a new coffee spot. I asked the cashier what he recommended since it was my first time and he said I should try the Coconut Carmel Latte. It was a bit pricey at $8.50 but there was no tax. It was nice that they included on the menu why the prices are a bit high compared to other places. I came here to try and study but it wasn't the best. There is limited seating inside but they also have an outdoor patio (also pretty small) there was not outlets so if you plan to come here and study for hours come with a fully charged device. Other than that this is definitely a nice little spot to get together with a colleague or a partner and just chat, sip on some wine, and eating some delicious baked goods. read more
Strong competition for Gusto Bread in the fierce bakery town that Long Beach has become. We are blessed to have both of them in one town, but they are different animals and strong in different ways. What Gusto does, they do very well. Gusto has the loaf game down and some traditional pastries like conchas and two cookies, but their selection is quite limited and so are the coffee choices. I don't think they have introduced a new loaf flavor or new pastry (outside of the short term holiday items) the entire time I've been going there. That's where Colossus comes in, baby! Huge pastry selection both sweet and savory, full espresso bar with cold brew and matcha to boot. They are introducing new menu items constantly (cardamom knot or mushroom & gruyere croissant, anyone?) and they have a large breakfast/brunch menu. I had their eggs in a basket, and it was way better than expected. They are even experimenting with pizza on Friday nights. We got the vegan pie and that was good as well. You can taste the baker skills in the crust, and I love a good crust. I hate to cheat on my 1st love, but I dream about the cardamom knots at Colossus now, so watch your back Gusto...Colossus is coming up fast. read more

What is the difference between Brunch Takeout and Brunch Takeout (3P0)? The items are the same, but the prices are different.
Hey Chris! The (3PO) menu is for third party online ordering like Uber Eats and Door Dash. When ordering through our website, which will take you to Toast, choose the regular Brunch Takeout menu. Hope that helps!

No not particularly. They have very limited seating. Maybe 3 or so tables inside, and some outside seating.
Do they have any gluten free options?
Yes they do with their buckwheat pastry. but most things are not gluten free.
