Passing through Merritt, my husband was adamant in stopping at the Coldwater Hotel Pub and having a dish of Criss-Cross fries to feed his nostalgia. The décor of the hotel is a cross between run-down old glamour, recently renovated with new furniture and a coat of paint, and a place where friendly regulars come to drink on a weekday afternoon. A stage and dancefloor on one end and pool tables on the other. We arrived right on time for Happy Hour (drinks only), and enjoyed some mini-sized dirt cheap domestic beer. The smaller glasses held the right amount of beer for me; my husband had a little more beer. We ordered nachos using criss-cross fries to share. A generous portion of nachos arrived and we had our own little portions of salsa and sour cream, but we only got cutlery and napkins, but no plates to share. I guess I was used to always having small plates to help me navigate the nachos. We ended up killing more trees by using extra napkins as plates. They were as you would expect; melted cheese, olives, bell pepper and (thankfully non-spicy) ground beef. An interesting substitute using the criss-cross fries, though I would have preferred just having the new fries to themselves. Happy hour glasses are smaller and cheaper and when you add up the multiples of beers and their prices, it's probably comparable to the Happy Hour prices in a lot of other places. read more

Ate here awhile ago, definitely do not recommend it. Even with the hype of a robot server. Ordered simple club house with fries, watched the human server bring it almost to our table, stop one table away, then take it back into the kitchen for 10 minutes to sit on counter and wait till the other (other person with me) persons meal was prepared, when it finally arrived, mine was cold and fries cold/soggy, while the other persons was served properly. They offered to replace my fries but not the sandwich. I had to turn it down because if they did remake it, I'd be eating alone by the time it was remade. Honestly if a table of 2 or more people order food, it's on one ticket, if the chef/chefs don't understand cook time/prep times, they probably shouldn't be in a kitchen.Cooking should be a passion not just a paycheque read more

But I digress... This is the Coldwater Hotel. (see business link). It's an old hotel in a tumbleweed town. (whistle that famous Spaghetti Western: "Good, Bad and the Ugly" tune....) With a large exterior dome like turret and extended balcony arches to hover under in a rain storm. You feel you could ride up on your horse, tie him or her up and mosey on in to the bar. So we did. We tied up the Honda right out front and had ourselves a pretty decent burger and fries while watching a burlesque show--- er, I mean the watching the Canucks beat the Blackhawks on a big screen TV. I wandered around the M.C. Escher-like interior to see if I could pick up any spirit energy, just for fun. All I can tell you is I did get the "creeps" on the stairway and went back to the bar pretty quickly. They also have a restaurant with a pretty diverse menu, but it closes at sunset it seems, during the week. I'm sure we'll pass this way again sometime in a wagon train. read more

Coldwater Pub: The interior of this place is well, interesting. Tin cielings with loads wood and warn but comfortable wide leather chairs. It has a lot of character. Pool tables and a dance floor capping either side of the ample seating. It's the only place I've found in Merritt to go dancing on a Friday or Saturday, and the drinks are pretty cheap. Food here has been decent, they have great wings, and decent garlic prawns, though I haven't gotten to sample a huge selection from their menu. The kitchen closes at 8pm most days. The staff is fantastic, big ups to Jessie, great bar tender. The other odd thing, being an out of towner, I discovered Wednesday nights at 10pm the pub becomes a strip club. Somehow, every time we role through Merritt, we end up here. This time, I had a turkey wrap which was, frankly, delicious and the mountain of fries was not unappreciated (though it would have been very appreciated if they were fried a little longer). DH got the Bannock Taco which was a big assed fluffy hunk o' bannock topped with chili, lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. Was not taco like, but was tasty like (more for me than him since I appreciate a decent chili more than he does) Service almost knocked this down to a two, but what does one expect in Merritt on a Monday? read more

In the middle of Merritt, BC where I frequently had to stop for lunch. It's a little dated. They once serviced the best mushroom soup I've ever tasted. Service is friendly but it's slow. Waitress is friendly and a chatter box. She will talk a lot with customers resulting other customers having to wait a long time. So when you're pressed for time: maybe not the best choice. We ordered: -French onion soup is absolutely amazing. Very "grandma's special soup"-like. There is a photo I uploaded of the soup, I literally fought my family over it. -pulled pork sandwich is subpar. -poutine is not outstanding, the cheese and gravy were not molded together as it should -fish and chips were in the favorites section of the menu and it did not disappoint but it was not outstanding -ample parking -service is relaxing read more

The Coldwater Hotel is just the best and the worst of Merritt depending on how you look at it. I feel like it is the sickly, horrifying, quaint and disastrous heart and soul of the town, and if you want the real Merritt experience, this is the place. I had a dinner there. I ordered fish and chips because I forgot we were no longer on a coast, and paid for it in a mouth assault of crispy coated white mush. My BF ordered wings, asking if he could get half one flavour and half another flavour. We were told that can't be done because the pre-made bag comes with certain portions. OK then. Sometime during the process, the wings were dropped on the floor and it took them enough time for them to make more (out of the bag) for me to very slowly finish my deep fried fish mush (yeah I ate it all, I've watched enough horror movies to fear small town rage.) I do appreciate them letting us knwo instead of scraping them off the floor I guess. Then, there is after dark. Holy crap. After dark, the bar part of the building is full of barely 19-year-olds, and the saddest adults you will ever see. The DJ plays the same few songs over and over until people are drunk enough to dance to anything. This place is how I know the name of and feel unhappily confident identifying the discography of "Pitbull." The building itself is beautiful though. One of the nights I was there on of the windows of the beautiful building was smashed by a random drunkard. No one seemed shocked, I guess that sort of thing just happens here. read more

This place is interesting, as the building is split into 3 elements: a hotel, a pub, and a restaurant. We stopped into the restaurant for some lunch after a few days of camping in the surrounding area. The restaurant is a greasy spoon diner type vibe with lots of booths and decorated with antiques. The menu is pretty big and had a lot of different food types and options to work with. Even our pescatarian fried had options between veggie burgers, fish burgers, fish and chips, and other things that left him appeased (whereas a lot of other places left him eating salad or veggie quesadillas out of a lack of options). I personally was debating between the pulled pork sandwich and the John Candy Burger, which is a house made patty with cheese and maple syrup covered bacon on it. In an attempt of gluttony and post-camping satisfaction, they were nice enough to accommodate me by making a John Candy Burger and charging an extra $5 to top it with pulled pork. Allow me to say, this was the best burger I've had in ages. The pulled pork was full of big meaty chunks with a great sauce on it, so I'm sure I'd be raving about the sandwich on its own. But the pork nestled on top of the syrup infused bacon, cheese and burger. EPIC. Legitimately a 5 star lunch. They should turn this into a sandwich or at least a special. The fries served on the side were well cooked, and we also ordered sides of Caesar Salad to start at a lowly $2.25 each which was adequately tasty as well. Everything seemed to be home made and their chef deserves full marks. Even the french onion soup had fresh bay leaves in it. Nothing seemed to come from a can or was just reheated after flash cooking initially. Beer menu wasn't necessarily impressive but at least had a local option of Cariboo on tap... And while Molson owns Granville Island Pale Ale it was the only place I could find a proper pint of pale ale in the town, so I was happy. Bonus fun point: Having a mechanical claw game in their foyer. It was a quick way to lose $2 but even having the opportunity to win a stuffed animal out of a machine like that, the nostalgia was hilariously enjoyable despite coming out empty handed. I don't anticipate being in Merritt again any time soon, but if I do, I know I'll be back to the Coldwater Restaurant. read more

The restaurant is in serious need of work. Almost all of the seats had big rips with the stuffing coming out. The carpet was threadbare with rips in spots and big patches in others. The hallway to the washrooms was poorly lit and the patches on the carpet were lifting and are a hazard. Some of the tables that were set for guests had not been wiped after the last guests. Service was very slow because they were under staffed. I could forgive that but instead we were told the slow service was due to the pub being so busy. There were four people playing pool in the pub ... we checked in there before going to the restaurant. The food was ok but I will find somewhere else to go next time I am in Merritt. read more

Went to the Coldwater Hotel with a group of 12 to have their wing special at 4 o'clock. The waitress took all our orders and when it came time to bring them out she handed it all out in the wrong order. Ended up that the person in the middle didn't get their wings. Other people even got add on orders of shrimp and still no last wing order. Never stopped to ask if we needed anything else. We had to keep asking. The waitress was new but it still should have been up to the manager to make sure everything went smoothly. There were maybe another 6 people in the whole pub. If the service was organized, there would most likely not have been an issue. By the time the last order of wings came out, everyone had finished theirs. One note: The wings were very, very small. The Coldwater hotel in Merritt BC, is the worst looking building that I have seen in a long time. The worst part of it is, the upstairs rooms, that are rented to people. The hallway is filthy dirty, the walls are filthy and there is no way that anyone should be paying anything to stay in those rooms. I understand this is a heritage building, however, it is long overdue for a major overhaul. I find it completely unacceptable that anyone would have to pay for anything in the hotel. Whoever owns it ought to be ashamed of themselves for even thinking that they can get money from anyone to stay in those rooms, Especially if most of those people are vulnerable and have nowhere else to go. read more

Guys. I love this place. Apparently, it's under new-ish ownership, so I'm not saying totally disregard the old reviews... but I think times have changed 'round the old Coldwater Hotel. First off, it's a gorgeous old building with tons of original charm. Second, the clientele is... well, also charming, in its own way. I was really feeling the cowboy hats and kudos to the staff for giving a friendly welcome back to a regular who loudly announced he'd just got out of jail. Cheers to you, buddy! Third, the strobe lights and stripper pole really set the scene on a Friday evening at supper time. Yes, it was weird. But delightful small town weird, which is an acceptable weird-level when one is just passing through. And finally -- the food! Our entire group disregarded the overwhelming menu (save for the vegetarian; she had a veggie burger) and ordered the special. My expectations weren't high for a $7.50 steak sandwich, but holy crap, it was actually GOOD. The steak was a generous sirloin; wasn't overcooked; and was served on a giant piece of garlic toast. The accompanying fries were pretty tasty, and made all the better when dipped in a side of gravy. All washed down with a cheap pint of house beer (that turned out to be Caribou. First, I expect that they were predisposed to not listen to our concerns because we sent the draft beer back, but it was skunky. Either the lines were filthy or the glass was unwashed. Sorry. Stopped by Merritt (the country music capital of Canada!) to break up my drive to Lumby. A very small town, but this hotel definitely stuck out. I ran in for a quick brew and was taken aback by the Wild Wild West feel to the interior. Some pool tables, some darts, a trough for a urinal, and a ton of seating. Minus a star for the wimpy claw strength in the crane game though. read more

We ate here while on a work trip - the food is delicious for the location and for the type of food, typical pub fare. I had the John Candy burger, which was a delicious combination of beef burger, cheese and maple bacon. My buddies had the pork cutlet from the seniors menu and the perogie breakfast plate. Our plates were clean at the end of our meal! Highly recommend you stop here if you're eating in Merritt! Big portions, good prices, good food! Awesome food in such a cool pub. Lucky enough to get there during Happy Hour, so got a buzz on with $3 beer and some good grub. Couple of pool tables for entertainment, then went next door to their liquor store - it's HUGE! So much selection, plus a ton of Cuban Cigars. Such a cool place.
