House salad with Turkey and avocado
Cindy C.

We are so weird! Our most memorable food in Hawaii was from here. We were driving around the island headed to Hilo and stopped here for a coffee break and decided we might as well get some food too. Coffee was so so, but the breakfast sandwich and house salad with Turkey and avocado was so yummy, fresh and absolutely divine. Its a small hole in the wall place and this place was packed. The staff were friendly as well. Only draw back was no restrooms here. Porta potty outside. Come on!! Would I stop here again? I'll get back to you.

Stopped by Coffee Grinds by accident. On our way to Volcanos National Park, and the family was hungry so we pulled over. We were pleasantly surprised by the smoothies here. Tasty! My son and I got the breakfast burritos. They were good. My wife got a breakfast with eggs (the little square baked eggs that go in the burrito), bacon and toast. She was happy to finally find some breakfast. The area is quite active with the locals. It's a bit of a community center of sorts between Coffee Grinds, the gas station, the post office and the grocery store all right there.

I stopped by and had the breakfast burrito. A friend recommended I try it out and they did not disappoint. They have good food and are conveniently located right off the main road. The service is quick and friendly. Great pit stop for anybody looking for some good eats or just a nice spot for a breakfast on the morning commute!

Friendly Staff and Service at Coffee Grinds!

In Captain Cook; if you want a good breakfast either healthy or hearty or both, stop at this gem of an eatery on the way to Volcano National Park or on the way to Kailua-Kona. The granola with yogurt, local honey and banana was my choice; however, other fresh fruit toppings are also available. My husband loved his BLT on homemade sourdough bread. Coffee is great! We arrived around 11:00 a.m.; but, it soon got busy. There are so many other choices on the menu for breakfast, lunch or other; everything looks good, too! Takeout or sit-down inside or outside available Friendly service. One more thing; remember to close the door on your way in or out - owner wants to keep the AC on :) Very happy to recommend! Were very glad we sought this place out - thanks Yelp!

Stopped here on the way to Kona and was glad we did. It was a nice and quiet place to get some great breakfast. The food was on point and the service was quick and fast.

We tried out this legendary Japanese Hawaiian diner near the end of our trip. It is literally like…read morea slice out of history! Not to be missed! They have a TV showing historical clips of the Japanese immigrants who moved to Hawaii. We learned so much just dining there! The servers were very nice and friendly. They even offer free, hot green tea. It wasn't crowded when we went there for lunch. The server said we could order from the dinner menu too. The restaurant is decorated with a bunch of old family photos. It's not a fancy food location, but a place that is in the locals' hearts. Also, it's not standard Japanese American food, so don't come in looking for rolls and such! Instead, they serve fresh, perfectly prepared Japanese food with a Hawaiian twist, favorites like saimin and shrimp tempura. The large saimin ($16.17) was delicious and really hit the spot. Toppings were Spam, eggs, and veggies. Simple, but tasty! Shrimp tempura appetizer ($14.85) was a pretty large sized dish. The pieces have a lot of crunchy batter and the kids loved it. It was a bit greasy, but that's to be expected. DH got a Oyako Donburi with sashimi ($21.93). Wow, the sashimi was truly amazing! So tender, it just melts in your mouth. The eggs were cooked with bamboo pieces which kinda threw DH off. I liked them, but DH would've preferred it without. The flavor is sweet/salty and pretty mild. It came with miso soup and some pickles. Parking is right in the front and backs into the main road. It can be spicy getting out if traffic is heavy. They don't have a lot of bathrooms, so there might be a wait. Those are the downsides. Otherwise, a wonderful local place to eat!

After reading about the extensive history of this long-standing Japanese/Hawaiian family…read morerestaurant, we had to come check it out. I got the No. 3 Teishoko which comes with Miso Soup, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Shrimp Tempura, Sunomono, Tsukenomo, and Rice. The tuna was so smooth and melts in your mouth. And I loved the flavor of the pairing of pickled vegetables with the sukiyaki (flavorful and tender). I do wish the shrimp tempura had a little more shrimp and less tempura batter though. Also, we didn't realize that our waitress was the great granddaughter of Grandma Teshima herself. She was so nice to us during our visit! I would recommend checking out this restaurant. Looking forward to trying out their breakfast the next time we come back!

Found this place was open till 1 pm and they served pancakes. Nice, because the alternative would have been Denny's...no thanks! Nice little hole in the wall where you order at the window and they serve you your food at the table. I ordered the Seafood omelet and a side of Macadamia Nut Pancakes, wife ordered the Boneless Short Rib plate. My only gripe was the pancakes only came with maple syrup and not a macadamia sauce, which we had to buy separate. I was used to having the sauce come with the pancakes at a certain restaurant in Kailua, Oahu, so this was a bit unexpected. But the food was well prepared and tasty. It was really good! So good we came back the next day to have breakfast again. Only this time it was Adobo Fried Rice. We brought two plates for me and the wife which we soon regretted because my wife could not finish hers since the portions were really big. Should've have shared just one. Another place to add to our go to list to eat when we come back to visit Kona.
