Rather than welcoming a prospective student, they spent the entire interaction explaining all the reasons he couldn't see the campus that day. A simple gesture -- "since you're here, let us take five minutes to show him around" -- would have meant the world to a child. Instead, we got rigid rules and zero warmth. If this is how a school treats prospective families during what should be their best foot forward, I can only imagine the day-to-day environment for kids. We made the decision on the spot not to enroll. I'd recommend other families look elsewhere.

The school provides a strong presence in the neighborhood and supports students, but the way they handle traffic and maintenance creates major quality-of-life issues for nearby residents. During the school year, parents often block driveways during drop-off and pick-up, making it frustrating for those of us who live here. Even after raising the issue, it continues regularly. On top of that, maintenance teams sometimes use leaf blowers as early as 6:30 a.m., even during the summer months when school isn't in session. It would be a huge improvement if the school scheduled this work at later hours. I respect the school's mission, but I hope they'll consider how their operations impact the surrounding community.

The SEL curriculum and Cool Tools reminds me a lot of UCLA Lab's approach -but without the tuition. Last year my other son started kindergarten. He's young for his grade so we decided to repeat kinder and got full support of the faculty and staff to do this - they really listened to us and allowed us to lead what we knew was best for our child. The Faculty is also very diverse which was important to us - we were looking for a school with strong BIPOC leadership and CWC is exactly that - amazing folks for my kids to look up to and aspire to be like - that look like them. One thing I wish there were more of, is the arts - but we are working on it - it's a community with so much room to create and imagine a future. As we look for inclusion of all children, why are poorer children of color being obstracized from these fun events? On another note I've heard that parents who contribute the most to the school are guaranteed their choice of teacher in the Fall. This is just yet another example of "Pay to play" in our stratified, divided world. Schools are supposed to be the great equalizer but apparently not at Playa Vista Elementary School.

Other schools appeared to us to just continue with programs as they have for many years. I think their philosophy of strong academics in a nurturing environment was unique. Their size definitely allows for attention that may not be available at other schools. Their college placement is as good as the other private schools, and strong athletic and other extracurricular activities also made it a comprehensive option. School choice is a very personal one, and Windward is selective. Just like other private schools they have many candidates for each opening. The entire experience was smooth and well organized. Windward has a beautiful campus and a great atmosphere.
