Pulling up to this restaurant, it definitely doesn't scream out "great Mexican food," but Tex Mex definitely punched well above its weight. It looks a bit trailer park-ish from the outside but proves to be semi-cozy inside. My chilaquiles verdes were very good, especially the salsa. They were definitely much better than you would expect from a seemingly over-broad menu of not only Mexican, but BBQ, breakfast dishes, burgers, etc. The chips and salsas were also excellent, with perfectly textured tortilla chips and two very good salsas, particularly the green. Sadly, the rice and beans were both subpar, but everything else made up for it. My buddy said his chile relleño was very good as well. Combined with personable service (our server was genuininely funny), this is a great stop for when you find yourself in the Lake Wohlford area. Apparently new management took over early this year, so if you haven't been here lately, it might be worth a return visit. Perhaps I try some BBQ next time and report back, although it'll be hard to pass up those chiliquiles! read more

What an outstanding gem! Nestled across from Lake Wholford, take the time to check out this great cafe. I had Mexican dishes this time, and will again. My Pollo Asada Burrito was massive and authentic, and prepared like Mexican food should taste! Their menu is packed with options for sandwiches, burgers and of course BBQ. And a good selection of craft and domestic beers. It's a friendly restaurant with a warmth and the feel you are welcome and come on in! That's likely how you will be greeted by their wait staff. Heck yeahh!!! A lot of places over charge for breakfast not this place. Very wallet friendly. I treated my dad to breakfast and he's someone who orders EVERYTHING. We couldn't believe the price it was a great value. I can't wait to try their other foods especially the dinner specials! Our server was Trish. She was really great!! We used to eat their BBQ ribs at their truck place but they stopped serving it. It was AMAZING!! So we were excited when they opened this place and found out they would be serving the ribs. Trish gave us the bad news that it's not served til 3pm. Guess we will have to come back LOL!! Trish broke the news but gave us great suggestions. We all ordered the BBQ brisket. It was amazing!! The bread was so fresh and the meat had the amazing BBQ sauce the ribs have. It had coleslaw in it with pickles. The fries were crunchy not greasy. We had the guacamole and chips appetizer. The guacamole had the perfect spices with lime. Great portions and definitely home made chips. The best! We will be back for sure. read more

My husband and I were drawn to Cocina Tex Mex by its stellar 4.5-star rating on Yelp. Unfortunately, our dine-in experience was a letdown. We waited for what felt like an eternity for our food to arrive. The lengthy delay only heightened our expectations, but what arrived was subpar. I ordered the fajitas, while my husband opted for the chilaquiles. For $25 each. we expected a decent meal, but the presentation was unappetizing. The shrimp in my fajitas were dry, burnt, and rubbery. We were both thoroughly unimpressed. In fact, we didn't even touch our meals. It's a shame, really, because the view from the restaurant was stunning, overlooking the lake. Perhaps Cocina Tex Mex relies on its scenic location to make up for its lackluster cuisine and slow service? If you're in the market for overpriced, underwhelming Tex-Mex with a side of dry, burnt shrimp, then Cocina Tex Mex might be the spot for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

We dropped in for the first time for breakfast and were not disappointed. Service was spot on and the food was very good. We had the Chile Relleno omelet and pork chops and eggs. Western/rustic ambiance was cool and lived that they had the windows open which allowed for a nice breeze. We will be back! read more

So glad we have a restaurant near our home that we can enjoy a good heart breakfast or dinner. Love the flavors with the mixed variety of dishes of Mexican and American food. The owners and working staff are all friendly and attentive. You get a full plate of food with leftovers to take home. And now they have a liquor license and are able to serve alcohol. They have happy hour food menu throughout the week. read more

Had breakfast there today. It is a new go to place. The chicken fried steak and gravy was the best I've had in a very long time. Just had breakfast at Cocina Tex Mex. My biggest complaint in San Diego county was that restaurants over charge for breakfast. This place is outstanding, food, large portions, and the price is really great. I will be going back often as this is exactly what I love in a restaurant.
