Diehl's Bakery - Yummy German-style buns- As good as they get here in NZ

It's amazing how the smell of hot bread can transport you to a different place in an instant…read more.. This is exactly what Diehl's Bakery does to me. I may be a bit biased admittedly (being half German) but I do think the big range of sour dough breads, pretzels and pastries make even a longer trip worthwhile. Bread is probably the number 1 thing that Germans abroad winge about and I can guarantee that EVERY German in Auckland knows about Ingo Diehl's bread heaven. Don't be fooled by the slightly industrial look of the bakery and give the Black Forest or Pumpkin and Carrot bread a go (my partner keeps on saying that you could kill someone quite easily by hitting them on the head with one of those breads that you do actually need to have teeth for) . One of my favourites would have to be the poppy seed cake that is nearly as good as my mum's. I'm praying to God that Ingo has no plans of retiring any time soon.

I can't really comment on the authenticity of Diehl's German bakery items, as I don't really know…read moreanything about German breads and sweets. All I can say is that the pretzels are amazing. However, the awkward little parking lot is treacherous, and they sell out of things quickly because they have quite a loyal and plentiful following. Don't be surprised if your favourites are gone when you get there. But fear not, I've seen lots of people there picking up their orders that they called in and had held for them. So try this if you have your heart set on a particular item (or 10!) Also, their hours are limited, so make sure you check their hours of operator before you show up there to avoid disappointment.

Once in a while, I get a craving for unpretentious bakery fare that does what it says on the box…read more Baker's Dozen is close to where I live when I'm in Auckland, so it's often my most convenient option. The food is good, on the whole. It might seem 'common' of me to be discussing the quality of bakery food on a forum where most reviews are of Customs St restaurants; but a junk-food aficionado appreciates that simple items like pies or even cream buns can vary hugely in quality. Their pies are not the best I've had, the pastry isn't flaky and delicate as you'd ideally want, and the filling can be a bit 'gelatinous'. But I very much enjoy their pepper-steak pie, and also their seafood pie -- the latter especially is an item that can turn out very good or very bad, depending on the establishment. The one at Baker's Dozen is very flavoursome, the filling is of a similar consistency to say a steak and cheese pie rather than the mushy, almost styrofoamy filling I've experienced on occasion [and I've done my research :)]. They also do a fantastic ham and mayo square type thing, it's got a signature flavour to it that I can't quite place, a hint of sweetness... yum. I'm also a stickler for their coffee cream donuts, delightful. I must say I've had awful service there in the past from the owner, and I can't omit a mention of it because it left me with a very unpleasant feeling. Lately though whenever I've visited Baker's Dozen I've been served by people other than him, and they're all friendly enough if not effervescing with joy at my custom -- though perhaps that's because they know as soon as I walk in the door that they're about to sell out of coffee cream donuts :D

Glenfield Bakery - Surprisingly tasty ginger crunch

The place is unassuming and doesn't leap out at you in a promising or tempting way, in fact we only ended up coming in here because I had to visit the pharmacy next door. So I was surprised to find that their pies are excellent. I'm a stickler for a good pie, so I know my stuff. The butter chicken one was a monster, I was almost intimidated when I took a bite. Creamy filling bursting out of the thing... tastewise, I think I detected chicken stock or some such ingredient that was a bit unexpected, but it was still delicious. My friend had a steak, bacon and cheese, which I took a bite of before he wrestled it back. It was the 'good' kind of steak pie, with dark, thick gravy and succulent bits of meat. And we followed with a piece of ginger crunch each. It looked lacklustre but was actually delicious. The base was super crumbly and buttery, which I love. I couldn't help noticing the big mirror installed at the back of the store, directly opposite where customers stand... and wondering if it doesn't affect their bottom line. I can just imagine customers gazing wistfully from the mirror to the pie cabinet and back again, ultimately settling for a diet coke ;) (jokes, jokes)

They have always opened to the public 8.30-5pm Monday to Friday however they recently decided to open the cafe. The cafe will be open Monday to Saturday, and open late till 9pm Thursday-Saturday, so it will be a nice treat for those who live near the Beach Haven area. It was because of this that I noticed it and I am really glad I did, they have a whole assortment of chocolates, fudge and amazing chocolate gifts. They were very busy in there today getting chocolate ready for Easter, and if you want you can get a big chocolate with your name on it. As well as selling to the public they have a huge number of businesses that they supply to such as hotels, restaurants and shops. Today I had a coffee and biscuit combo that went down very well, and I tried the fudge - vanilla, chocolate and black sambuca - all of them were very good, but I especially enjoyed the black sambuca. I think I will come here often for my chocolate fix.

It's a super cute, quaint little shop in Beach Haven. When I wondered up to it this morning an EXTREMELY friendly lady welcomed me with the warmest of smiles and ushered me inside. She told me all about the store and the things they sold and offered and their hours. She was not pushy about sales or anything just genuinely filling me in on their business. I had a nosy around and loved everything I saw. I could find a gift for every single person I know, they were all wonderful and unique. I bought a three pack of truffles to share with my mom and sister. We nibbled and shared them between us and they were beautiful. It was only $5 for the pack, which I don't think is bad at all for quality chocolate. Extra bonus - they are open for deserts and hot drinks on some nights and there are ice cream scoops sold too. Everything you could want for a sweet tooth! I'll be popping in for desert very soon.
