You can find bakeries all over the show these days. All offering differing baked goods, pastries,…read moresandwiches and the like. I have yet to find one that outshines all others on all fronts and this one is no different. Sandwiches are standard and have slightly more fillings than most other bakeries I have visited. Hot pies and pie warmer foods are ok but far from award winning. Offers your standard array of drinks but they do have a very good line up. More than most so you have a good drink selection to boot. Where this bakery shines however is in its sweet treat lineup. If you have a sweet tooth then this is the place for you. The food is always fresh and well presented. Custard pies, cheesecake slices, pancake and cream wrapped bananas, obligatory cream dounuts, frands, the list goes on. They also rotate out a few from time to time and try new flavors or recipes just to keep things fresh. I return here however over & over just for there sweet pies. Pecan Pie, Apple & Rhubarb, Apple & Blueberry just to name a few. Sooo delish and fresh. Eat them cold or take home, warm up and serve with a scoop of your fave icecream.

Wandered in here not knowing what I wanted, not even feeling all that hungry but knowing I wouldn't have another chance to eat for many hours. But I was suddenly attentive (and salivating) on glancing down at the middle cabinet and seeing before me, CRONUTS!! I don't know if this counts as a big deal anymore, but to me it was certainly an event. I'd heard a lot about this new pastry invention, and had wondered what the hype is about... basically a croissant with cream, right? Wrong! I bit in and was transported. The texture of the pastry, almost 'teasing' in how it disappears when you bite in... the creamy, custardy filling... and most importantly, the icing on top which lent just the right 'kick' of intense sweetness to balance the pleasant mildness of the filling... it was something else! Don't know how these cronuts compare to other attempts, but in and of themselves they were delicious. Totally an event in my gastronomic existence. Their other offerings are fairly predictable, a range of pies, sandwiches, et cetera... I bought a lamb and 'something' pie, don't recall exactly; it was satisfying but not remarkable.

It was delicious - moist and the icing was good too. A young girl served us and she was friendly and polite, ringing up the sale with a smile. Having this just up the road is going to be dangerous! It also looks like they do a delicious range of milkshakes, with a retro milkshake machine behind the counter.

If you're in the Ponsonby/Herne Bay area, Icing on the Cake is the place to go for milkshakes. They're a reasonable $4.50, and have everything a good milkshake needs. If you're feeling a bit fruity, you can also get a frozen yoghurt; also good but not a milkshake. They also sell cute looking cup cakes here, which I suppose is where the name comes from; they look impressive but I'm afraid I can't report on how they taste.

This was quite…read moreexciting as it is only a 20 minute walk from my house and right across the road from the New World supermarket (which I sometimes go to). My sister and I decided to try it out 4&20 three Sunday's ago. It was Father's Day and my Dad loves croissants. We bought three almond croissants priced at $4.80 each - a little on the expensive side. My Dad, two sisters and I agreed that they were just too buttery and very rich (luckily I just had half!). Aside from croissants, they also sell brownies, 'morning buns' and a range of loaves. I could not believe the when I saw the price of the loaves - $12 each! I did read somewhere that 4&20 kneads every loaf by hand and they are then baked in their specially designed oven, which took six months to arrive here from France. They also use organic flour and free range ingredients in all their baking. I guess that explains the expensive prices. Maybe one day I will try a loaf, but in the meantime I'll keep buying my bread and pastries from the La Cigale Market at half the price...

For lunch today, I decided to stop by Marbecks Kitchen from something quick and satisfying. Today…read morewas not the day for a salad. I chose a spinach and chickpea roll (picture a sausage roll, but without the meat obviously) and it was just what I was after. It was really tasty and had a nice flavour. There looked to be lots of delicious sweet treats in the cabinet also but I was strong today and didn't need the sugar hit. I must commend the lady who served me, who is the manager. She gave excellent customer service, was all smiles and only too happy to help. You can tell she enjoys her job which is awesome. I'm definitely keen to go back again and sit down with a coffee. It seemed like a nice spacious cafe to me, with lots of different seating arrangements and of course some good music playing! (Marbecks did once specialise in selling music but have now diversified to include this cafe). Incidently there is lots of big cd / artist posters to look at on the walls of this cafe.

It was hard to resist the amazing looking cakes behind the glass. And even the pies were looking great. But it was only 10am and neither would come close to a nutritious breakfast. My closest bet was a muffin - not really that healthy but it would have to do. There were quite a few different little muffins sitting on the counter so i asked what flavours they were. Each muffin was a different flavour and they all sounded delicious. There were cinnamon ones and double berry and of course. I the lovely man who was serving me was very friendly and took me through each of the muffin flavours pointing them out. I decided on blueberry because I thought it was the safest bet. It was pretty scrumptious! But next time screw breakfast I'm getting a cake.

It's nice and light for a cheesecake - almost like a spongecake, but made with cheese! One can see the makings through their clear windows! The smell of baking it up, can be alluring as well! I like how they offer chocolate cheesecake as an option for the chocolate lovers. They offered the imprint of the good fortune guy for new years on the cheesecake for the festivity on Lunar New Years! There can be a line to wait for these lovelies since it is made on the spot! It's a good welcome for the Queens street in main downtown Auckland. From Japan, this one marks a great spot to obtain some cheesecake puffed pastry for a snack or for a festivity dessert - like Lunar New Years!

I can understand the hype and this is a very light and delicious cheesecake. Typical I am not a fan of cheesecake due to the heaviness but this cheesecake from uncle Tetsu is nice and fluffy! It actually resembles more of a cake that cheesecake. If you're a lover of cheesecake you'll definitely need to try!

As I was driving through Royal Oak this morning all of a sudden something caught my eye; a massive…read morepink 'Cake' sign! I had to stop! With gorgeous pink and lime green outdoor furniture outside, it was a shame it was blocked by a massive bus shelter. Inside was a cute little café that had lots of amazing looking cakes. Large cakes, medium cakes, cupcakes and mini cupcakes. They also had a selection of savoury items, also Allpress coffee on offer. On the back wall they had a large selection of items to purchase such as cake decorations, pre-made coloured fondant icing, cupcake holders, also coffee beans for sale. Here I purchased a carrot cupcake and a mini humming bird cupcake! Both of them were divine! I was very pleased with my choices. I was also swaying towards the rocky road cupcake as that looked yummy, so ill certainly have to go back. As I was paying for the cupcakes I also noticed they did catering. Perfect if you have a party or corporate function coming up. There is street parking in this area that all appeared to be free. Alternatively you could park in Royal Oak mall just across the road.

It's like a grown up's lolly store. Specialising in slices, cupcakes and fancy cakes, everything is pink pink pink and looks absolutely delicious. The Cake Stall also offer catering for special occasions and provide savoury food as well as their delectable sweet treats. The only slight negative that can be said about the Cake Stall is that there isn't a huge range of gluten free options available. Beautifully packaged bundles of biscuits and cakes are available to take away, or alternatively you can stop and enjoy a sweet treat and coffee on the premises. There is an outdoor area at the front of the store, though to be honest it's not the nicest place to sit being out on the street, so grab a beautiful decadent cake and head to Cornwall Park and enjoy it there! Tip: Edible decorations and the like are also for sale at the Cake Stall.
