I went into the Tynemouth store yesterday to pick up some BBQ groceries after a day on the beach. My 17 year old son came with me on the spur of the moment to give me a hand. Amongst my shopping was a box of lager and a bottle of wine. The cashier refused to serve me on the grounds that my son was not 18. I admitted he was 17 but I was purchasing the alcohol for a home BBQ. I was told by the cashier that because she couldn't be 100% sure that I wouldn't share the alcohol with my son she couldn't serve me. This was the store policy. I assured her that I had no intention of sharing the alcohol. She said she couldn't be sure so no. I asked to speak the manager. He was at an adjacent till. rather than come over and speak with me he shouted across that this was the policy and I wasn't getting served. Disgusted at having a value judgement made against me I walked out with no shopping. To show how farcical the policy is my wife walked in, purchased the alcohol and we went home. Surely this policy discriminates against parents with teenage children and alienates customers by calling into question their integrity. I was 'spitting feathers' all night at being called a liar by a young teenage cashier. It is truly disgusting. I pointed out to the manager that the policy was unintelligent. If I wanted to buy alcohol for a minor I wouldn't bring them into the shop with me. If I was that stupid I would be employed as a manager of a co-op food store and quote the word policy at every opportunity. I will NEVER shop at the Tynemouth store again, or any other co-op, because of this policy of discriminating against parents who shop with their teenage children. I don't want to be judged by a cashier either who makes a decision on whether or not I have integrity. read more
