Waynes, Victoria Park is one of the smaller Spar stores in Cardiff. It sells food and coffee to go…read more(lattes are £1.50), but does not carry alcohol like so many of the others. It does however have on-site parking and so it's a great stop off point to stock up on picnic supplies before heading off into the park. I love Spar stores for a whole host of reasons, the main one being that Spar is a franchise like Londis and the Life Style convenience stores, and so they are owned as independent businesses, and are not to be confused with supermarket chains. The essential and important difference is that supermarkets make their profits for the organisation, whereas shops like Spar are profitable for the individual owners. A friend told me an interesting statistic the other day... apparently 80% of the money spent at supermarkets leaves the local economy whereas 80% of the money spent at independent stores remains within circulation locally, which is great if it's true! If high percentages of money leave a localised area, then impoverishment will eventually ensue. So, to retain 80% of the money you spend within the area in which you live means the opposite! I can often buy things cheaper here than I can at bigger supermarkets. I find it interesting that we have all bought into the fallacy that supermarkets sell things cheaper. It's just not true in many instances! There's no denying that the massive supermarket chains indulged in a price war to kill off their smaller competitors, but when they felt that they had done as much damage as possible, they allowed their prices to steadily rise, allowing them to make more profit per customer. Perhaps what they didn't reckon with is that shops like Spar and Londis were going to preserve a lot more independently owned convenience stores than they thought. Not only is this competition essential to keep the larger stores in line, but it also means that local convenience stores have access to larger bulk buying discounts, thus often making them more able to undercut the big boys! Because Spar shops are all franchises, they can, if they want, participate in national promotions, and offer discounted items for a limited period. Not every Spar shop is the same. Being independently owned means that the proprietor of each shop can buy in stock that is culturally relevant to the local area in which they trade. This has to be seen as a distinct advantage Spar has over its larger rivals, but the main benefit to the local communities which they serve is that when locals shop at Spar they are making an investment in the future!

I believe it used to open just till 10pm, but I love the fact that they didn't change the name when they adjusted the opening hours. Charming! Anyway, it's a brilliant convenience store in its own right, regardless of the name. I like the feel of it, tucked underneath the houses on Richmond Terrace, and it's really well stocked and reliable, with extra things like a full pick 'n' mix stand! It's very friendly and helpful, and it's got one of those thoroughly local noticeboards out in front displaying ads for flats, community groups, and other neighbourhood bits and bobs. I recommend that students buying tins of beans etc at the Student Union shop down the road come here to The 10 O'Clock Shop instead; it's much friendlier and you have a better sense of being connected with other non-student people living in Clifton.

What else do you need to know about a community? As well as acting as the town notice board, this is a very handy corner shop, run by a friendly local family. They have a massive selection of munchies (sweet treats), a huge range of alcohol and spirits and last but not least, they have a Pick 'n' mix! This shop is packed full of bits & pieces it's not hard to see why they have done so well in the heart of the student community. They even sell children's footballs. Although they had sold out of my favourite newspaper today at lunchtime! The mystery of why it is called the ten o'clock shop rages on.

With this place being just down the road from me, I go here all the time. The staff (always the…read moresame guys, 24/7, 365 days a year!) are really friendly and always say 'hello' whenever me or my girlfriend walk in. Admittedly, they suspiciously watched if we were going to steal anything the first couple of times that we came in (I don't blame them in this area), but now they've relaxed and realised we're good, straight down the middle, honest folk. They sell the usual run of newspapers, cigarettes, sandwiches, booze and other household essentials. What surprised me the most, though, was that they stock free-range eggs from nearby farms and some of the most delicious locally-sourced bread that's great for toasting. Buy here instead of going to bloody Tesco's round the corner if you can help it!

Both times I bought it for lunch, the sandwich was essentially a mayo sandwich, with no bacon and a single lump of chicken in the corner. I've literally just eaten the chicken slice and the only filling I found was right at one side and even that wasn't full. I've now become sick enough of it to actually make a comment on it but it's ridiculous. Especially given how over priced the meal deals are. From now on I'll cop lunch from the bargain booze because at least the price matches the quality of the food. Other than that staff are lovely and the shop is clean and well stocked. Just a shame

They were even rocking out to Rage one Friday night, obviously that forced me to stay a little longer than I'd planned. It's not the biggest shop in the world, but they have packed in stock, so there's a lot there. It's good for an emergency bottle of red to take to a friends' for dinner. Or those late night snacks when you've rented a film and got the munchies. They have so many different types of sweets and chocolate, and loads of magazines. A great place to stock up on fuel (biscuits, tobacco, tea, bread etc.) if you're a student (probably living in the flats above) before staying up all night to get your work done for a deadline the next day. They even have parking just outside, which ok this being Bristol is not the promise of a space, but it's much better than most.
