Of all of the sports I might imagine having an affinity for, I have to say, lawn bowling has not…read morebeen hovering at the top of that list. However, when a bunch of my elders, whom I greatly respect, give up their Saturday gaming and agree to get their requisite whites dirty to show a bunch of hoodlums how to play, they have my attention and best effort. Forget that we may or may not have been drinking and we may have made an unsavory joke or two in what we were informed, quite promptly, is a family establishment (can establishments be a well groomed grassy playing court in a park?). Those little snafus aside I was going to give this lopsided ball rolling my best go. Did you know that not only are the balls lopsided but they are weighted heavier to one side so that there will always be a curve out or in when you roll them? I didn't either but thanks to my stellar lesson I do now!! So, I roll the balls for the first time and, wow, its fun! In all of my alcohol induced glee I decided it was a great idea to take on the ultimate challenge and play the US Lawn Bowling Champion. And. I. Beat. Him. What??? Yep, the crowd went wild. I won a very nice polo shirt. Bells were rung, I, one by one, shook the hand of each of the lawn bowling club members present that day, who also happen to have a great sense of humor about these things. I was invited to watch this very same player compete in the World Championship happening in San Francisco this September. Lawn Bowling. Who knew?? I am going to buy some white pants and do this again. Yes. I am purchasing white pants. If that doesn't say love I don't know what does.

After years of walking by the lawn bowling club and seeing the older folks decked out in all white,…read morehappily rolling balls across a meticulously coiffed field, I finally decided to try it. I saw a daily deal for a party for 10 at the lawn bowling club and jumped on it. When we arrived on the day of the party, we were met by a handful of ... well, lawn bowling people. They were all super helpful. They helped us all pick out our "bowls" (a set of 4 lawn bowling balls that fit your hand) then we went to the field to play. They explained the rules (there are a LOT -- way more than I expected!) and then they helped us while we played. The bowls are oblong and have a weight on one side, which means you have to really think about where you are aiming. The helpers were all patient and nice, but if I had any small recommendations, it would be that they hang back after a while and just let us play without critiquing and commenting on every shot. But they were just trying to be helpful. Everyone in my group had a great time and some even signed up for a membership. There was a big discount for the membership that day ($68), but normally it is $165/yr. With a membership, you can pretty much go to play whenever you want. If you are curious about lawn bowling, you should give it a try. Call them up and see if they have any special deals or rates for a first timer who wants to try it out. It's a great way to spend a day in the lovely San Diego sun. (And the all-white clothing is only required in Sundays!)

It's kinda funny to see men in business attire playing - but also heartwarming to see that just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't go out and play. The field itself is pretty clean, and I'm surprised that on any given weekday, there's people playing a game of lawn bowling there. I haven't had a chance to check the club out on the weekends when they're more active - but if I'm over there at that time, I'd like them to teach me how to play!

When I took my day trip to Balboa Park there were a few areas that caught my eye the cabrillo bridge had more near by when you go to places there are places usually hid by the tall bushes and the large hedges. The many signs near by showed me many of the large grass areas one that I saw was of cricket finding it was one of the larger fields that was fine cut grass the addition of fine sand . For this was one of the many fields here in SanDiego that has many field green games. One of the oldest games from from the first of the Greek Game of Bachi the first games of bowling the many players had to nock certain balls away to score and gain placement . From the ancient Egyptians the small balls that would be rolled through a circle to gain target circle areas. For the many games that you see played from the countries of Europe and the Countries of England and the United Kingdom one of the greatest games area that was brought to the United States. For the history of Balboa Park there is so much of the many areas to the European games that were brought to the United States. The Lawn Bowling Fields of Balboa they have their own club house for the many teams that come to Balboa Park Playing Field . The Lawn Bowling field is one place to come and see what the game seeing the balls being rolled and the clack of the balls hitting one another. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer the many games that I've seen this has been one of the oldest games that have been the sport of King and Queens. The area around Cabrillo Bridge has much more for the history of the many great games played at the park.

There are indoor/outdoor basketball courts, an outdoor sand volleyball court, and a large outdoor playground area for kids. On any given day you'll see people out playing soccer, softball, cricket, rugby---I think there's even a badminton league that plays here in the indoor gym. There is also a dog park on the far end if you have a pup that needs some social time outside! This rec center is a really nice community resource and it's good to see it being used to its full potential. If there were tennis courts here it would be perfect!

There is also a tandem swing, which is rear to find in San Diego. Overall great park, plenty of different seating area with picnic tables, lots of shade. If you walk around to another side by the dog park there is another small play structure, its very quite and not crowed there. My kids enjoy coming here and so do i.
