We were in the St. Elmo's neighborhood for dinner and were excited to see a Clumpies across the street. We were visiting Chattanooga for the weekend and had heard that Clumpies was a Chattanooga favorite. This location is at the base of the incline at Lookout Mountain which is super convenient for those people riding up/down the mountain. We arrived about 5pm and the young ladies behind the counter were very friendly and welcoming. There had approximately 20 ice cream flavors including butter pecan, chocolate, vanilla bean, peppermint patty and strawberry chocolate cheesecake. The young ladies were happy to provide us samples which were served on small metal spoons which was a nice touch. My wife decided on the Myers Lemon Ginger ice cream on a waffle cone. After hiking around Lookout Mountain, it was time for ice cream. Clumpies came highly recommended - we actually tried to go the previous day to the Southside location, but we didn't realize it opened late at 3PM. This day, however, we would not be deterred and dropped by the location next to the Incline. Double ($5.99) - We chose two seasonal flavors for our double - Red-Berry Chocolate Cheesecake and White Chocolate Peppermint Bark. The former was studded with smashed cookies and a delightful fruity berry swirl. There was enough swirl to impart its flavor, but not enough that the ribbon was noticeably icy. The latter has a mild peppermint white chocolate taste and has small pieces of white chocolate, peppermint pieces and bark mixed in. Both were great. The quality of the ice cream base really comes through - it's super creamy and dense with low overrun. The ice cream has no ice crystals whatsoever to speak of and stays intact quite well without melting, showing just how high the quality is. Clumpies sure has some great ice cream! I'd been to the Clumpies downtown, but on our way out of Chattanooga, we stopped at this location in St. Elmo's. The two kids working at the counter were super nice and were patient while we deliberated our options. I settled on the whiskey caramel cornflake while my friend chose the blueberry white chocolate - both very solid choices, in my opinion. The whiskey caramel cornflake was smooth with a nice crunch as a contrast and with the sticky sweetness of the caramel. The blueberry white chocolate had a lot of potential but it must have been sitting out for a while since there seemed to be some icy chunks that were not as smooth and creamy as expected. At first we thought maybe the ice cream was supposed to be more of a sorbet but if that were the case they added too much cream for that... Parking is street parking only but we had no problem finding a spot across the street. I ordered a scoop and did an up charge for a cake cone (sign said all ice cream served in bowl but showed additional pricing for cones). I wish I had of taken a pic, but when I got my ice cream, it was in a bowl with a cone turned upside down on top of it. That is not what I expect to receive for ordering a scoop of ice cream in a cone. I had to use my spoon to dig the ice cream out of the bowl to build my cone. She ordered a cake cone - so the one scoop she ordered was huge for the small cone. She managed to make it work though. The employee at the counter was super nice and she answered all the questions I had. There is a small window for COVID precautions where they hand out ice cream. If you order with a cone it's all basically tilted upside down in a cup. I was a little surprised at first, it's my first time seeing that. But it's not hard to get it right side up lol. But the cup is a very smart idea in case you make a mess or can't fit all the ice cream on your cone. This is a perfect location right next to the Incline Railway. Yes, our Incline Railway operator mentioned Clumpie's, but having seen the truck around town the evening before and the add in the Rock City map earlier that day, I knew that I'd be having some anyway. I love that you pay by weight, so you get exactly as much as you want. In this case, I wanted enough to taste, but not more than I really needed. The friendly staff tried to talk my 3.5yo into the Curious George (vanilla with bananas, chocolate, and peanut butter), but he chose strawberry with sprinkles. me: "What's in the St. Elmo's fire?"
