Honestly, I am a and I found the quality of the to be absolutely excellent. All of the and the nurses were excellent. I had to come back the next day for a reevaluation.. ( I'm reading a lot of reviews online about people complaining about waiting. Just a hint, don't go to an ER if you have a minor problem that can be dealt with in a clinic An ER has to prioritize and when people go there with issues that can be treated in other places, this causes the long waiting times, not the doctors or nurses)

My mother had a angina episode and the nurse on duty was in a hurry to go home after her shift and didn't want to check on my mother's vitals and told me it's probably just nausea and she just needs a gravol pill , but I insisted on taking her vitals and grudgingly she did and very rude doing it , then all of a sudden after taking my mother's blood pressure she realized it was not nausea and something more serious, then called the doctor and rapidly after the doctor came in they gave my mother nitro spray and did a few more tests. My insistence on checking my mothers pressure is the only reason my mother wasn't left alone while having a angina attack and suffering alone with just nurses aids who pop in the room just to see if the patient is on the bed or not and they do absolutely nothing else but seeing if the patient is still in the room. If I let it go the way the nurse wanted to just to give her a gravol pill my mother would have not lasted the night. This happened in 2021 and that's not the only mistake that happened before she passed away with liquid in her lungs waiting till after the weekend, because they don't do surgery on the weekends so my mother had to wait two days to drain her lungs, but she didn't last two days, she died in her bed when I found her dead at 6:30am and the nurses didn't even know that she passed away before I arrived at 6:30am. The staff ran all in to revive her but she probably died an hour before I arrived at 6:30am , too late to save her and nobody there realized that she passed away before I arrived at 6:30am. They rushed us to get arrangements done probably so we wouldn't do an autopsy to find out her exact time of death during the night before I arrived at 6:30am. The Hospital should be investigated, I'm sure there has been plenty of people who fall through the cracks at this hospital and are not treated properly.

I strongly believed that she had pneumonia and would most likely need antibiotics. After many attempts of trying to get an appointment with her family doctor.. even stressing the point of importance to see someone we finally decided to go to the Verdun Emergency. I have never had a problem with this hospital...but today's visit was extremely alarming to me. My mother had to have X-rays done and when she did all that and got called about the results..it ended up not being pneumonia. The doctor that saw her had said..no signs of pneumonia...it is viral not bacterial...no antibiotics needed...was told to just get plenty of rest for next couple of days and you should be back to feeling yourself in no time. So..basically it was like a bad flu etc....considering the news..we were somewhat relieved. Rest it was because it was VIRAL AND NOTHING SHOWED. About 3.5 hours later..Dr. from hospital asked if she could come back and basically..as soon as possible...right now. She goes back and had a couple of tests and sure enough...Dr. was right..she needs plenty of rest...because she HAS CANCER!!!!.. We went from....no nothing shows...it's Viral ..to Cancer...How is it possible to have not noticed this when we were there previously thinking it was pneumonia. I have no medical knowledge but when looking at an x-ray ...I am sure I would be able to see a mass in the middle and lower part of chest...We left there with the complete wrong diagnosis., to having Cancer. What is wrong with you people. How many times I wonder has this happened. Extremely shameful...disrespectful.. despicable. If you send a patient for an x-ray and you are not able to read an x-ray then you should not be giving any information to any patient but what they have or may not have because obviously way off key. Disgusted!!!!!!

I had the WORST experience at this place. For any black…read morewomen. women of colour, beware! I've been debating myself about sharing my nightmare experience in case it was a one time thing. I decided to share finally in case I'm not alone. In Mid 2019 I had a crisis and was rushed to St-Mary's in an ambulance. I'd been bleeding for almost a month and that morning I woke up with the worst pain of my life. I attempted to walk it off, but I collapse and was told that by the time the ambulance arrived there was blood everywhere. I was treated with respect and care in the ambulance. They calmed me down and off to the hospital we went. Once we arrived at St-Mary's, the first nurse I saw kept asking me if I had had an abortion. I told her no, and the fact that I wasn't sexually active yet. She kept insisting on it. At that point however, I couldn't talk much because I was writhing in pain. She took some blood and send me to the waiting area. Once girl from the ambulance came to me later with a blanket to cover myself and pads and told me to hang in there. About 3-4 hours later, I was sent to a consultation room and waited another 30-40 minutes to finally see a doctor. He came in looking at his chats or whatever, asked me if I was still in pain, I told him it was better than before. I tried to tell him my medical history, about the past 30 days. He just cut me off and told me that since I wasn't in pain anymore [they gave me pain killers] to just go home and come back if I am in pain again. Mind you I was still in pain. I told him as much. I also asked what was wrong with me. About the blood work. He walked to the door still checking his clipboard and said just come back if your are in pain again and left. I had no idea what to do. I came to this country on my own not too long ago. I don't really understand how hospitals work here. I had to go to a private clinic and pay over $700 to see a doctor for a diagnosis. I was ignored. My pain was doubted. There were no tests done to find out what was wrong. I was harassed by a nurse about an abortion even though I told her I hadn't had one. I see many people go to hospitals and come back with answers or At least guidance on their conditions. None of this was afforded me. Not even basic human decency. I didn't even get a face to face with the doctor! I remember the top of his head though. I'd be careful going to institutions that treat people this way.

I'm not sure how one accurately rates a hospital because there are so many areas of service and…read morenumerous staff. I would say that I have primarily been satisfied as a patient at St. Mary's. I laboured and gave birth there 2 months ago and the staff in the birthing center were wonderful: gentle, reassuring, and knowledgeable. Of course staying several nights wasn't particularly pleasant for me, especially when sleep deprived, but I could tell the nurses enjoyed working in that unit. I was offered plenty of support and never felt ignored. My family doctors and experiences with Cardiology, ultrasounds, and blood lab have all been positive (as much as they can be). However, there are certain staff who I've found to be less attentive, have an attitude, and generally seem apathetic. If I were an older patient or one with reduced mobility/disabled, I may not want to have surgery there based on my observation of family members treated there in the past. Certain floors seem to lack staff and resources to adequately care for patients.

Thank goodness for our healthcare system! The General is simply amazing. I am so very grateful to…read moreall of the emergency room doctors, nurses, auxiliary staff, security officers, and the kind folks in imaging. At the height of the 1st wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, back in April 2020, in the middle of the night, my grandma's hand slipped when she tried to get up from the toilet after peeing and she fell and busted her head open. She was rushed to MGH and they did imaging, put four stitches in her head and discharged her ... all of that in under 90 minutes. I was so taken aback by a phone call from my grandma at 2AM saying that she had fallen and was bleeding profusely. I biked over there faster than I ever had biked before to find my 94 year old Nana wrapping a second towel around her head. The first towel was sopping wet with blood and there was blood everywhere. I almost leapt out of my skin. Now, my grandma is a tough as nails, a strong as a horse, and a stubborn as an ass type of old school person. She was born in 1926 and sat in front of her property in Guyana with a loaded shotgun for 40 days to protect herself and her three babies from looters and rioters during a general strike after independence from the British. And she hates going to the hospital. So she wasn't going to the General without a big conversation first. I called 911 first and then started negotiations with my stubborn grandma to reason with her to go to hospital. She finally agreed moments before the paramedics arrived. These two paramedics were incredibly kind and skilful. They treated my grandma impeccably and communicated to her in English with warmth and attention. Now, remember this was at the height of the 1st COVID-wave in the city; the swamped hotspot hospitals were Verdun and Lachine. Which is exactly where the emergency dispatch wanted to send my grandma. The paramedic relayed this to me, shaking her head diplomatically, to which I said absolutely no way! She fought for me with that dispatch person. That paramedic may have saved my Nana's life for not taking her to Verdun or Lachine. She actually explained to me afterwards that she negotiated with the dispatch so hard and "used a favour and squeezed her in the queue at the General" ... faith in humanity restored! It was really sad having to let my grandma go to the emergency all by herself but she understood why and so did I and we felt very safe and comfortable with the paramedics. So off she went to the General. Literally, I didn't even have enough time to get home, take a shower, and finish telling Rebecca everything that had happened before the hospital called to say that she had been seen by the attending physician, had had imaging done to rule out concussion or other head injury, had gotten four stitches, had been discharged and was ready to go. I barely had time to hop in a taxi. I was so relieved to see how expediently my grandma's head was treated. I am so grateful and thankful for the service that she received. And my Nana thanks the staff at the General as well. Y'all rock the awesomeness of cool. Much love and thanks to you all for your service. We need to pay nurses, paramedics, and healthcare auxiliary workers way more money.

This review is based on a visit in August 2020 (so during the COVID-19 pandemic). The first thing is that unlike prior to the pandemic where you would just go upstairs to the "prelevement" center from any entrance, get a number and then wait for your number so that you can go to the counter to start the process, now you enter at the Cote Ste-Catherine entrance, disinfect your hands in front of the security guard, speak with the security guard in the front regarding the reason for my visit, and then line up in an aisle to get a time when you can re-enter the building to wait for the blood test line-up process. I got my paper showing what time I should return and was told to leave the area (I'm assuming building as well). Lucky for me it was in August so I just waited outside. Since my blood test was a "fasting" blood test, there wasn't much I could do except wait since it was early in the morning and most businesses were not open yet and the closest Tim Hortons was open but I obviously couldn't go there. Although it was raining that day, I was underneath the cover near the Cote Ste-Catherine entrance so it wasn't too bad. About 10 minutes before the time written on my paper, I went back inside, disinfected my hands in front of the security guard again, showed the security guard my paper with the time and was told that I can proceed inside the building and to follow the directions for the "prelevement" center. Once inside, I had to wait in a different area where there was another security guard and once it was the time written on my paper, I (and the others with the same time) were allowed to line up to get a number at the "prelevement" center. Everything from that point onward is relatively the same meaning you get to the counter with your number and the person behind the counter verifies your information with the requisition and hospital/medicare card, prints out a few labels, and then you proceed to the waiting area for the actual tests. The waiting area for the actual tests has fewer seats available to sit on but due to them limiting how many people are allowed in at any one time, finding a seat wasn't an issue. You then wait until your number is shown on the screen in the test waiting area and disinfect your hands once more & you give your requisition paper to the nurse/technician for your test.
