Despite the Woodland Dr. address, the entrance is just off of Wilmot Rd., but you can't easily see the park until you've turned and driven a few yards down the entrance (opposite Hertel Dr.) to the east. Recently renovated, there's a large paved parking lot, which is necessary when little league games are being played. There are two baseball diamonds (with grass infield, backstop, and bleachers) and two softball diamonds (dirt infield, backstop, and bleachers). Two marked soccer fields, with goals, bookend the park. In the center is a general purpose grassy play field. All of the grounds are super-flat, have excellent drainage, and are meticulously maintained. The quality of the fields rivals Jewett Park and Brickyards Park. Just past the center play field is a pavilion with bathroom, picnic tables, two playgrounds with play equipment, and a full basketball court. There are water fountains throughout the park, along the paved trails and besides the sports fields. Sections of the park are lit all the time, though I think the park is still considered closed after sunset. The trails also connect to Crabtree Ln., Elmwood Ave., and Woodland Dr.

To me, the best part about the facility is the historic significance of the location--where the Battle of Barrington took place. The Battle of Barrington was an intense and deadly gunfight between federal agents and notorious Great Depression Era gangster, Baby Face Nelson, that took place on November 27, 1934 in the town of Barrington, outside Chicago, Illinois. Very cool if you are a history buff like myself.

It's huge, and has everything you ever wanted in life, including an aquatic center and even a golf course. I feel a story coming on....... So I had an art gallery just a few blocks from the park, at Hough St. & NW Hwy.. My son would often come to the gallery after school to do homework, or just to check in with me. One day he rode his bike to the gallery, with his friend Gerry. The gallery was set back off the street, separated from the road by a parking lot. The sidewalk in front of the gallery did not get a lot of foot traffic. My gallery had two huge windows, right on the sidewalk in front. I sold a ton of artwork just by displaying it in those big windows facing the busiest intersection in town. When the stop light was red, I had a captive audience, haha..... My son and his friend parked their bikes in front of one of the big windows. This town was so safe it was like Mayberry, and there was no reason at all to wheel the bikes inside, so we thought. We could even see them clearly from inside. So I clearly saw when two big "kids", probably pushing 20 years old, jumped on those bikes and took off. By the time we all ran to the front door, the thieves were already a block away. My son had waited a long time for his new bike, a gift from his dad. That bike was his transportation around town, and would you believe I still have it, and sometimes I ride it. As I saw those 2 men ride off on the kids' bikes, my heart sank. I figured it was a done deal, a lost cause. The boys ran in the direction the bikes had been headed, but I still had little hope. The surrounding business people began to come outside, aware of what had happened, but helpless to do anything. Until.......like a character from an action movie, a blonde woman appeared out of nowhere. She ran after the thieves, so fast that I didn't recognize her as my boyfriend's sister, Denise, who worked in the drugstore a couple doors down from the gallery. Denise, the track star. Denise, the marathon runner. Denise.....the savior of the day. She ran like a bat outta hell, like she'd been shot from a cannon, across busy parking lots, down the highway toward Langendorf Park. She caught a glimpse of the thieves entering the park. I had called the police by now, and they were on the way. And my son and Gerry, and me and my employees, and half the shopkeepers in the plaza, were in hot foot pursuit of Denise and the bicycle thieves. If only I had a video of all those people running down Northwest Highway in this sleepy, boring community where nothing ever happened......haha.... You can already guess that Denise caught up with the thieves, in fact just in the nick of time..... just as they were struggling to hoist the bikes over a back fence in Langendorf Park. They ended up abandoning the bicycles and taking off on foot, through the park, with the mob chasing them. The cops caught them. There were charges filed, and eventually a court date. My son had to take off school to go to court and testify. The thieves, who turned out to be like 19 years old, claimed it was all a prank, all in fun (although they were strangers to us)......and the judge let them off. Boooooooooo.......... But at least the bikes were safe. I'm glad for that tall fence at the back of the park. I'm also glad for all the hot summer afternoons when the pool was a godsend. A little tricky to find, but is now one of my favorite spots to walk in the area - Buffalo Creek is…read moreenormous and stealthily bordering busy Lake Cook Rd on the south. The easiest way I found to get into the parking lot is by going North on Arlington Heights Rd past Lake Cook Rd onto Checker Rd and then taking a left right away. My GPS originally directed my onto the south side of the area. Once inside, you'll find an expensive space full of plants, creeks, bridges, and more. There's plenty of space to walk, bike, skit (on benches, picnic tables, etc.), fish, and more. At the entrance, there are toilets though there are many possible options for shorter and longer walks so it's not super difficult to get back to the parking lot should you need to cut your route short. This walk is one of the more picturesque walks to take around sunset time if you want a beautiful and relaxing view during your entire stroll.

Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve offers a nice place for a relaxing 1.9 mile hike. There is an option…read moreto go farther by following the various offshoot paths. Parking is very limited off of Old Hicks Road but there are not many people going onto the path so you should be fine. There is a varied turf combination of paved and gravel. The path is pretty even, smooth, well kept and good for all ages We saw what seemed to be a grasshopper migration (9/21/25). We stopped counting after 25! However we did count 7 furry caterpillars crossing the path. There were many species of prairie willow, berry trees, cat tails and a few wild mushrooms too. Lake County is offering a hiking challenge over the next couple months and it's a fun way to see all that Lake County Forest Preserves has to offer!

This review is for the rec center only…read more This facility was renovated 5 or so years ago, and the gym is very nice. It has wood floors, scoreboards, and a small bleacher section (5 rows) on one side. There are regular daily open gym hours, and many other activities. Pioneer also has a swimming pool, baseball diamond, football field, and tennis courts. It also has the best fenced in, lighted, full court outdoor basketball court in all of Arlington Heights. Highly recommended!

I didn't see any restrooms, but I read elsewhere that there are some nearby. The sidewalk that takes you across the park is smooth, and there's plenty of green grass along the path to hang out in. The park feels safe. It's in a really nice neighborhood with picturesque large houses along all sides of the park. I wonder if this park is named after Kanye West, the rapper, or Adam West, the original Batman, or Mae West the actress...

I took a trip to Happy Tails Dog Park and had a good experience overall. The park is clean, well…read moremaintained, and has plenty of space for dogs to run around and play. One thing I really liked is that it's located near walking trails, so it's easy to take a nice walk before or after spending time at the dog park. The only downside is that it's right next to the train tracks. Trains pass by regularly, and they can be pretty loud, which might startle some dogs or make it a little less relaxing. Overall, it's still a great dog park with plenty of room to play and a convenient location. If the train noise doesn't bother you, it's definitely worth visiting.

Small dog area has no access to water and is like sitting in someone's small unshaded backyard. Rules are never enforced and passes are never checked. Very few owners engage with their dogs, or even supervise them. There have been several incidents of people AND dogs being hurt by unsupervised, untrained dogs, including two incidents where paramedics had to be called. Not recommended, especially for smaller dogs.

Centennial Park in Arlington Heights is a park with four tennis courts, three baseball and softball…read morefields. It features a walking and bike path that leads to a nature preserve area. There is a great area where you can observe the wildlife and pond. There is a nice playground here too. There is an easily accessible parling lot. I enjoyed walking this path. The only negative is that the walking path doesn't connect in the park. If you want to make a complete loop around the path, you need to leave the park and walk through the adjoining neighborhood. I recommend Centennial Park.
