I missed this the first drive around the area looking for murals, so I'm glad I swung by a second time. This adorable patch of land was created as a free garden by The Bread Box, an art gallery 100 or so feet away. It's not a community garden in the usual sense of that term, hence my calling it a free garden: The signs welcome folks to take whatever they wish that is ripe. When I was there not much was ready for harvest, but what was planted included basil, cilantro, dill, squash, and tomato. The dill was ready, actually; some of it was flowering and so deliciously fragrant. The smell of flowering dill always makes me think of my grandpa, because he would use it in his dill pickles and that's what made them so delicious (to this day I can't eat any other dill pickles than what he taught me to make because they aren't as piquant because he used a lot). It made me want to start canning some dill pickles. This is a really sweet addition to the neighborhood and a lovely gift. I really wish free gardens and edible plants for municipal landscaping would take off; it's such a great way for neighbors to care for one another.

But when folks in Louisville talk about parks....they tend to talk about the MASSIVE, Olmsted-y, woodsy parks. But these smaller neighborhood parks are just a great, in different ways. This is a generously sized plot of park. Encircled by a paved loop, with every amenity one would expect from a park. Pavilions, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, a community center, benches, picnic tables, and open green space! I like it and I visit it often.

Murals, sunflowers, blackberries, and more are all the things you will discover if you attend one of their super friendly, way laid back, awesome events. If you happen by when it is closed to the public, you can help yourself to the ripe blackberries growing along the fence (but leave some for others!), or check the trough by the frontgate to see if the community has any vegetables to offer. Today there were onions. There is also a Covington community shelf along the side of the building to check. Wonderful place, nice people, serene vibe in the center of Covington. They give so much!

The garden also plants things along the fence that are allowed to be picked by anyone passing by. Flowers around the outside of the fence may be picked as well. We enjoyed some lovely tart currants during our visit. Mindful of food insecurity in the area, excess produce is shared on a table outside of the garden. This is usually done during the summer months. At the corner of Scott and 10th St. is also a sunflower share box. Box has been known to include snacks, seeds and books. Looking to get involved? We helped with weeding, removal of invasive species, picking up of trash, and preparing some land through Keeping Covington Beautiful. We had children in our group ranging in age of 5-17. There were ways for everyone to contribute.

Claysburg community garden is a public art mural followed by a community garden in the…read moreJeffersonville Indiana area. The mural itself is created by the artist group known as the art cartel. Me and my friend and fellow yelper Jeremy j has been going Around the city of Lousiville neighborhoods and surrounding areas and adding the public art to yelp. Jeremy somehow learned of this new mural and garden in nearby Jeffersonville so we made the trip over here. Not being a resident of the area and not really spending any time here I'm not familiar with the area so I do not know much about the claysburg community. But regardless this is a cool piece of art and community gardens are always nice to see and represent a positive impact. So kudos to the town for adding this.

I have been meaning to attend a Bike-In for a while now…read more When I finally had a free evening on a bike-in night, and it was nearby, I decided to swing on over to check it out. This time they were at Central Park and set up on the Kentucky Shakespeare stage. Hal & Ben's Bike-In offers family friendly entertainment in different parks around the city. The event of course encourages people to get to the event via bike. Once there, food truck are on hand, as well as a beer booth or two. The event wraps up with a movie screening, which is preceded by music performances. At the Central Park bike in, we were treated to a performance from the Louisville Leopards youth percussion group, unbelievable beatboxing from a young man named Rayoul, and of course some singing and stringin' from Ben Sollee. I think this is a great event. Very cool. Good for kids and dog-welcoming. And FREE! The best of things for cost-conscious folks. If you should get a chance to attend, for any portion of the night, you should take it!

We always have so much fun walking around the event, checking out everything it offers, and hanging out with friends. Very scenic and interesting park that I stumbled across by accident while ironically attending a…read moreyelp event down the street with my family and some of my daughters friends. There is a small gravel parking lot behind this church and park area. The park area has some really cool and interesting sights. The winged man statue, a tiny door, a cool angel statue, and a nice wooden gazebo with a clock painting at the top. The guard rails had handcuffs attached to them so the kids had fun with that. Tiny place but it packs a lot of cool and interesting sights in it. They also have some picnic tables over to the right to sit and relax or have a picnic. Overall this adorable and peaceful park was a nice surprise and based on it only having one review so far it's a hidden gem for the new Albany area. Cool place that any park or public art person should absolutely check out. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place by accident.

It is something I've really only seen at elementary level schools. I'm not sure if it is tan by classes, fraternities, sororities or just whoever wants to participate. Overall I guess it's pretty cool. Any type of plants and life that can be grown is a positive I guess.
